Super long, but super detailed.
Let me start by saying that my family and I have come to Barracuda many, many times before and NEVER had such an awful experience as we had today. Around 12:45pm, my 4 kids and I walked in. Iit was a large lunch crowd but there was no wait so we were seated fairly quick.
Once seated we waited for 10 mins for a waiter to come and that was only until I literally walked over to their counter. Only then did our waiter say "I'll be right there". So this tells me you knew you were taking super long to greet us.
Once he came over, he reeked. Maybe because it was a super busy lunch crowd, but he was super sweaty and BO was super potent. Anyway, he said "You ready?" Not, thanks for waiting, not, sorry for the wait, but "You ready?" I let it pass.
I asked for water, one tea, ordered our rolls and asked that he bring out rice and miso soup with the water and tea so that my 2yo could eat and be calm. He rushed off after, didn't repeat the order or anything. He comes back with the water. Then goes to grab the tea. Then come with the rice and soup.
We waited. And waited. Then finally our food came. LEt me say that it was rush hour, so I was giving him and the kitchen the beneifit of the doubt. But I began to notice that he was literally no where to be found after our food came. We need more water, more napkins, I would have liked to place an order of gyoza. We were waiting. Finally, I saw him attending to another table, made eye contact and from where he stood asked me if everything was ok. I said, actually we need, this, that, this and an order of gyoza. He said "Got it".
My children ate their sushi, shared MY water because they were out...they were the best that children could be, but when it was about 15 mins of waiting for gyoza to come, I was super annoyed. Oh and during this time, he never came with the water, or napkins.
So I got up again (second time) to ask for our waiter and to also complain to one of the staff.
I said, not sure where our waiter is. I know it's super busy, but we are having the worst experience. She says, "Oh sorry". Then from outside our waiter appears. Yes, HE WAS OUTSIDE, Maybe on break? He comes rushing in, sees me and says "I'm waiting on your gyoza". Dude?! It doesn't take 15 mins. Like did he have to get them from outside??
I get to my seat, my children are impatient at this point. I tell them we are going to leave. Then here he comes with my goyza. Then he says "I won't charge you for the rice or miso soup since you had to wait". I explain that its not that I don't want to pay for my food items, its fine. I just think as a customer, we deserve a little more service and respect. Do you know that his dismissed my entire comment. He just said "Mk" and walked away!
At this point I am pissed. I take my 2 yo to the bathroom and when I come back he has given my children mochi ice cream?! I guess because thats how he feels bad?!
Doesn't make it better. Doesn't make me forget that he really sucked as a server and even though I tried my hardest to give him the benefit of the doubt nothing could EVER compensate for his rude behavior.
I paid at the counter, because he was lost again. My check was $44 and some change, yes I gave them $45 and asked for the little change to give to MY well behaved, deserving children who has to witness such fowl, horrid behavior from an adult. Yes i gave them the money I would have left for a tip to reward my children for being so well behaved as we wait about an hour and a half to finish a meal of a few sushi rolls, miso soup, rice and gyoza.
No manager can to apologize, no wait staff cared about how WE felt. All they could do is take off rice, miso soup and give them ice cream WITHOUT even asking me. I'd rather pay for all my food items in exhchange for respect!
With all that said, we will take the trip to I love teryaki at the Potrero Center in SF next time. I will glady spend $50++ for respect and quality service. -

The place is not even ehh ok. The food was ok...not that good, the vegetable gyoza has meat in it, I told the server he said its vegetarian b/c it's green. I know it had meat b/c I pulled it out and apart it was pink and shredded like meat, but the server said its probably mushroom...no. And no offer to make up for it or say sorry. And the sushi rolls...so much rice, and it was packed in so hard. Like large pieces of sushi with super packed rice is not easy to chew, even other diners were struggling to eat. It came to the point of just taking out the fish out of the rolls and eating that so we wouldn't be eating so much rice. They forgot our miso soup, and we had to ask twice& they took about 10minutes to bring it. The salmon teriyaki was decent, the salad was good. Overall I won't be back, the service wasn't good & the food was only ok.

the wait was way too long for the Elephant Bar, so I motioned to the gf that we try out that Japanese place.
turned out to be the right call!
friendly service, quick and easy ordering.
Very extensive menu, so many options!
I opted for the Geisha Roll & the special crab stuffed shitake mushrooms.
Both were *SO* good! fish was totally fresh, and the mushroom thing was super tasty.
gf had the veggie roll & veggie gyoza, and the gyoza was super!
very reasonable prices, and the decor is super Herman Miller style. Such comfortable seating and nice soft lighting made it a nice meal after crazy shopping action. -

Came here on a Friday evening with my MOHs. The place was pretty empty. We ordered:
Gomaae-spinach w/sesame dressing- tasted better than it looked
Gyoza-pot stickers- meh
Chicken Kara-Age-fried chicken bites-meh
Assorted sashimi- very fresh
Himachi Kama- yellowtail neck-my favorite dish at any Japanese restaurant
Spider roll- Gross!!! It had a weird taste and was different from other spider rolls at other Japanese restaurants.
Our server was MIA the whole time. My GF had to flag someone down to get service.
They also have happy hour here 4pm-6pm and the last hour of business every day. -

Wow... maybe just unlukcy, but service was ridiculously slow.
My wife and I went just for a to-go order at 5p (not even prime-time dinner hour) on a Sunday and ordered two things: 2 item combo (chicken terriyaki/gyoza) and a golden gate roll. The host giggled and said it would take 15 - 20 mins, looked inside the dining area and reassured us it would be more like 15 mins unless it suddenly became busy.
With that said, we went out to Target and walked around for a bit and came back. The host seemed like she recognized us and said our order should be out shortly and tended to some incoming customers. Eventually, she went back into the kitchen (i assume to check on our order) and came out to give us someone else's order (california rolls?). Obviously it wasn't our order, and she apologized and went back to the kitchen. It turns out the food order was apparently not ready, so we continued to sit and wait.
As we sat and waited, we realized that folks that came later than us for a sit down dinner were getting served their main course before we had sight of our food. I decided to stand and look around for the host as she had disappeared somewhere. When she came back, she asked how many people, as if I were waiting to be seated. (How quickly i'm forgotten!) I had to remind her I was waiting for my order and again she disappeared into the kitchen. She must have hid out there for a while because eventually a waiter came by to see if I needed a seat. I had to explain my situation to him and he went to talk with the host. Finally, the host came back out of the kitchen with our food. We paid for it and left. Overall wait: 50 MINTUES!!!
When we got home to eat, we realized that we were missing the salad from our 2 item combo. But on the bright side, we got our salad dressing... -

This place is alright (a-ok), all my friends constantly rave about this place so i decided to check it out with couple other fellow pals during happy hour. gyoza was bomb.com. but service? -1...they werent so friendly and we always had to click the "easy" button for them to come to our needs. I don't think they should count on the button to have them come check on us. Not only that, when i ordered my sushi roll..everyone at my table (table of 6) got their order, except me. -___-. -1 star. I had to call the waitress out to ask about my order..All my friends were done with their happy hour orderings, while i got mines 25 minutes later. not cool. I think i shouldve gotten a free order for waiting such a stinkin long time for something so simple. but whatever, im over it. so 3 stars...because this place is just A-OK. nothin else.

When I first walked into this place on a late Sunday afternoon I was like, "Is it just me, or does this place smell like feet?" The smell went away after awhile but I couldn't shake off my memory of the smell. I would've never expected it from a Japanese restaurant...as a matter of fact...a restaurant in general...or maybe it was a patron that didn't shower that day. Oh well, moving on.
I went simple with the ordering, just a Alaskan roll and a Spicy Tuna. They were both okay but the avocado in the Alaskan roll was overkill. The piece of avocado in there was bigger than the piece of Salmon. Booooo. The spicy tuna was okay, not the best I've had but not the worst.
My boyfriend had a bento box and I the portions are a good bang for your bucks worth. He got the Gyoza, California Roll and Chiken Teriyaki combo, which came with salad and soup. He was left full and satisfied.
I think probably the main feature of this place are the cocktails that you can order with your meal. They have whimsical names like like the "Hello Kitty." I had a Shirley Temple and I think it was good. But then again, it was just cherry syrup and sprite. Overall, I'd come back again to try their fusion stuff. -

Decent prices for lunch. Everything else on the menu is 8-9 bucks, at least. The food is pretty good, good portion sizes so it's kind of worth the price you're paying. Got myself a lunch box with chicken teriyaki and veggie gyoza. Regular iced tea. After splitting the bill with my friend, I paid about $13? Kind of EHHH for lunch, since their drinks are $2+. I would come back another time... Maybe for dinner? It seems like a pretty legit Japanese restaurant. The decor is really attractive. :)

I actually really like this place, considering it's a mall restaurant. I don't know, a lot off food places at "malls" aren't always the greatest if you know what I mean... But this place is somewhat different. Their food is actually pretty good! Whenever I come here I order the vegetable sushi combo which is basically just vegetable sushi. Nothing, special but still pretty tasty! Some times I'll get a combo that includes veggie gyoza and teriyaki tofu! Another roll that I think is pretty good is the Californian Lover! It includes their california roll but with a twist! It has mangos and a special sauce! Mmmm. It's yummy! If you also come here early enough, they have really good happy hour specials! In addition, this place has really good service! Everyone is so nice and friendly! Make sure to come here during the happy hour because, the food is kind of pricy, especially for the sushi.

Very disappointed with this happy hour meal. It was a very unhappy hour.
plus - They have happy hour from 4-6pm everyday.
minus - service = sucks a$$
This was one of the longest waiting experiences in my life.
5-10 mins. waiting to be seated while 4 waitresses chatted and looked at us. It was 3:55pm and there were maybe 6 people in the entire place. The place was practically empty, yet we still had to wait for seats
We has to wait for a while to order. Our drinks sat at the bar for a good 5 mins before the waitress brought it over. Our food took at least 15 mins to come. The place wasn't even packed. It wasn't even half full.
My friends came. They waited a while before someone took their order. Their drinks sat at the bar for at least 5 mins before someone brought it over. Let's just say all we did was wait.
Food: bleh
Rolls: spicy tuna roll, rock and roll, cali roll, alaska roll.
too much rice, no flavor. Just cuz it's happy hour does not mean we have to be served this crap.
spicy edamame - ok
tempura - ok ( good for the price, 2 shrimps and some veggies)
Yakitori - was tough, like chicken jerky.
Chicken karaage - over cooked. very tough
gyoza - i guess they took too long to serve it. not hot. not even warm.
I don't think I will come back. -

Had lunch here earlier today with my parents visiting from out of town. I live in Daly City and wanted to eat Japanese food locally. Unfortunately there is a serious lack of good Japanese food in Daly City. Are you listening all those proprietors of Japanese restaurants in overcrowded downtown San Mateo? When you find yourself unable to take the heat move your place up here. You'll do fine.
Anyway, I had a bento box with 3 items for $12.95. The items were grilled salmon, calif. roll, and vegetable gyoza (which I've never had anywhere before).
The salmon was supposed to be doused in teriyaki, but I strongly believe teri sauce and salmon were never meant to be paired so I asked for it grilled with salt and pepper only. At most places this is a good bet. Not at Barracuda. It was a very small and thin fillet that was way overcooked. It was dry as a bone and had no flavor to speak of. My aunt had the same salmon and felt exactly the same way. Since they charge $1 extra for salmon I was extra disappointed.
My veggie gyoza was glistening with oil, which wasn't attractive. It was also an unappetizing green color, which I guess means the wraps were made of some kind of vegetable material. I received five. I ate three. Nuff said. Don't get it.
The california roll was the best part though it was only average. They gave me 8 pieces, which I did appreciate. The salad was overdressed - but the dressing was good. I do like Japanese dressing. The miso soup was a tad salty.
My mom's tempura was decent. Her chicken teri was as overcooked as my salmon, but tasted okay with teri sauce on it. Is your mom like mine? She orders too much then expects you to eat half? Well, this time I was glad she expected that since my food was so lackluster.
My dad really liked his chirashi sushi. If he was doing the review he'd probably give it 5 stars. Due to this I'm giving this review 3 stars versus the 2 if it was just up to me with my lunch.
The cooks in the kitchen ought to spend some time trying their own creations.
The service was very pleasant and timely. No issue there.
The atmosphere is nice for a mall restaurant and they have decent discounts at times such as 20% off for dinner on Mondays and Tuesdays. Very extensive cocktail menu, which must be fun for the drinkers. I will go back, but only because it's convenient, not because I like the food so much. -
I am adding on a star because I came back recently to try out their Happy Hour deals and was quite impressed. You do not have to sit in a certain area and you are given both the regular menu with the Yellow Card Happy Hour menu. They have a pretty decent selection with the most expensive item on the Happy Hour menu being about $4. A pint of Sapporo was only $2 and a small sake that filled 4 sake glasses for us was only $2.50!! All in all we ordered 6 rolls (8 pieces each), 2 pints of Sapporo, and 1 small Sake ALL FOR $25!!!!!! NOW THAT IS A DEAL. Given the rolls on their H.H. menu are the basics, i.e. Cali Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Rock and Roll, etc; or that the apps are basics as well, i.e. Spicy Edemame, Tempura, Gyoza, etc -- but it's a GREAT deal for the price you are paying. It is SAFE to say that I WILL be BACK for your H.H. specials ... now if only they have more specials, i.e. 1/2 Tuesdays? =)
P.S. I LOVE those little buttons at the end of every table that are available for guests to push when a server is needed ... beats the heck out of getting up and playing a game of hide & seek with your server.
*Note: The extra star is due to the Happy Hour pricing alone and not necessarily the quality of the food. I think that their rice can use a bit of work, and my rolls were falling apart on the plate before I even touched them. If I rated the building as a whole I probably would still give it 3 stars or 3.5 stars rather ... but the Happy Hour menu prices, in my opinion, deserved a star all in its own. -

finally tried this restaurant.
i ordered salmon katsu and veggie gyoza. salmon katsu came with tartar sauce... so i had to ask for tonkatsu sauce.
the gyoza was deep fried. so i guess nobody at this restaurant is japanese, or knows how japanese food is supposed to be.
my bf ordered teriyaki calamari and salmon katsu. wow. that was the worst calamari steak we have ever had. it didn't taste or feel like calamari at all. not sure what it was. it was white, though.
service was fine. i mean, you have a buzzer on your table, so you don't have to try to catch somebody's attention. so that's nice. it is just like an izakaya in japan.
it does have good looking non-alcohol drinks, so if anything, i may go back for that.
although $50+ for dinner is not expensive, it is def. way too expensive for what we got. -

This place is pretty nice with dim lights and a warm comforting feel with lit candles! I like coming here for some pretty good japanese food. The service is friendly and attentive.
I usually order the bento box with chicken teriyaki with either chicken katsu, tonkatsu, or gyoza. The portions are pretty big and all their items are pretty good. I'm satisfied! I tried some of their rolls and they are not bad either, very fresh ingredients. Everything here are nice presented which I like. I like my food all dressed up and pretty before I dig in because it shows they really put time in it. For dessert I tried the chocolate mousse cake and OMG it was soo good. Ending with a good dessert just makes the meal much merrier.
It can be pricey here compared to some other japanese restaurants but if you come at lunch the bento boxes are half off! That's pretty worth it.
