Stopped for lunch, had the lunch bento, a handroll, a roll, and two drinks to split with one other.
5/5?Lunch Bento- great variety, salmon was nicely seasoned, nigiri fish tasted fresh and rice had a good texture (was a bit too much rice per fish). Tempura didn't have variety and wasn't very crispy, but nice and light. Sushi roll was good, as was the spicy shrimp. The star of it all was the salad- not your traditional ginger sauce, had a lovely citrus sauce with apples, walnuts, and mixed greens.
4/5 Handroll- Great flavor and texture combination
4/5 Roll- MASSIVE BITES. Each piece was probably 1.5 times the size of a normal piece. Good flavor and crunch, but not much salmon skin for it being a salmon skin roll
1/5 (Un)honorable mention- Yuzu lemonade was watery and tasteless
4/5 Honorable mention- Bloody Mary/Ceasar with a shrimp was lovely
Pricie was high but comparable with other restaurants in the area. Decor was modern and clean, service was polite and quick.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rosicella D.Glendora, United States078Jul 15, 2023

The previous reviews told a lot about this place. Pros - great food. Cons - loud atmosphere / slow service. Overall really enjoyed the food just had some more to be desired from the service. Clearly it is a spot locals go and enjoyed the food! Haven't seen yellowtail collar on the menu in a long time and it was a treat!

I ordered omakase. Chef Koji Kobayan created an epic meal for us.
We ate so many things, so I'm just going to highlight a few dishes. We tried the Rice Cracker with Deep Fried Salmon, Potato Salad and Yam Crisp. The crunch of the batter against the soft creaminess of the potato salad was killer. The salmon itself was flavourful, made even more richer with Koji's special homemade teriyaki sauce.
Our fourth course was the Matsutake Soup with Crab. The soup arrived boiling hot. The broth was clear and clean, which allowed the subtle flavours of the crab and mushrooms to shine. The wild BC pine mushrooms were thinly sliced, with a fragrance similar to sake. Drinking this soup felt so nourishing - simple but refine.
A4 Wagyu Nigiri. The wagyu was torched and and then a ton of black truffles was shaved on top. The flavour of the truffles was gentle and earthy. The texture was feathery and light. Seared, the wagyu gave off a mouthwatering smoky flavour. I loved the crunch of the salt. I thought this was an elegant bite.
My favourite course was the Lemon Dengaku. Dengaku is similar to a cheesy seafood motoyaki but a billion times better. Half a lemon was filled with mussels, crab, scallops, asparagus, enoki, and matsutake mushrooms, then baked with a creamy, sweet miso sauce. The flavour and freshness of the the seafood wowed me. The sauce had the perfect amount of saltiness in it. The lemon wasn't overpowering - just enough to perfume each bite.
Koji created a beautiful platter of nigiri for us. This was an advanced sushi tasting. Each nigiri pairing was an adventure. The bluefin chu toro was topped with sturgeon caviar. I liked how the salty pop of caviar mingled in with the fatty creaminess of the toro. The "Mother and Child" sockeye with ikura and chrysanthemum petals was another winning salty, creamy combination. The hamachi (yellowtail) was juicy. I found the lime zest with the kanpachi subtle. The cuttlefish had a pleasant crunchy texture. The bluefin tuna in the negitori with shredded kombu was soft and buttery.
Totally worth it and then some. If I were in Japan, our bill would have been four times as much. In Vancouver, at least double. Sukiyaki House imports a lot of their seafood from Japan and source some of the freshest seafood, which makes sense why the food is even better than I can get in Vancouver.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Apr 9, 2020Previous reviewDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, Sukiyaki House is open for pick up and delivery in the downtown core from Wednesday to Saturday. The chirashi for two ($50) is value packed and as good or better than my memories of the now closed Wa's Japanese.
There were so many wonderful treasures nestled among the fish - tamago, tofu, plum, large fish roe, and pieces of asparagus. The rice was perfect - each grain was firm with a bit of a chew to it. The balance of vinegar to sugar was spot on. The fresh crab was sweet and juicy. We received four pieces of silky smooth scallops. The ahi tuna was melt in your mouth good. We also received two potato salads and two bowls of miso soup. I added karrage ($12) to our meal - despite the 15 minute drive it was still crispy. The meat was juicy and flavourful. That lemon aioli was sooo effin good. I ordered too much food. I was so full I passed out at 7:30 p.m. and had one of the best sleeps since COVID. My husband couldn't finish his potato salad because he was stuffed.
I also ordered a bucket of beer for $30. We received 6 bottles of Japanese beer in an Asahi bucket with two glasses. Not sure if everyone gets the glasses. We go to Sukiyaki House often and have gotten to know the family that operates this gem.Feb 16, 2018Previous reviewMy new favourite spot. Quality is excellent. Restaurant is beautiful. Spicy shrimp were a generous portion, tempura battered and the sauce had a hot heat to it. Drizzle a little lemon and this dish just pops. Beef tataki was another stunner. Ruby red meat, lovely ponzu sauce. Ebi nigiri was noticeably sweet and the texture was lovely, crunchy.
I want to come back for the tempura, sukiyaki, and more sushi!
FYI - one of the chefs was the former chef/owner of Sushi Club, the head chef is specially trained for Japanese fine dining, and other used to work at Shokunin. You are in good hands! - 1043381456Dec 12, 2020
Christine L. referred me to the Sukiyaki House. Definitely was not disappointed. Ordered Seafood Sunomono, Sashimi Dinner and Rice. My friend ordered the Chicken Teriyaki. Our miso soup to start was delicious. The salads had a nice light sauce that was very tasty. The seafood was one of the best dinners I have had, the seafood is actually tasty which is unlike landlocked Alberta. My friend really enjoyed the chicken teriyaki. We polished off our dinner with an amazing mochi dessert. Oh yum it was simply delicious. The restaurant has a nice clean ambience. You will certainly not regret eating here if you like fresh tasty seafood. The owners and staff are super friendly too!
Be sure to make reservations, this is not the kind of restaurant you can walk in and automatically assume you will get a table. Last night was very busy with the upcoming 4 week dining in restrictions taking place after closing tonight.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Diane T.Vancouver, BC5055May 2, 2022

This is one of the better sushi restaurant in town. I came here and tried the lunch bento box for $25. It came with soup and salad, choice of beef or salmon, assorted chef special sushi and prawns.
I loved it. Its definitely one of the better sushi that I have ever had in Calgary. The sushi came out fresh. The salad is unique and tasty. The roasted walnut bits are glazed in sweet honey which made it unique. The salmon was nice even though the piece is small. Loved the miso soup. It had lots of seaweed (I like seaweed) and tofu. You can tell that they made it in house.
This sushi restaurant is comparable to the restaurants in Vancouver. (Never been to Japan so don't know if its comparable there).
The restaurant is quite small and you definitely will need to make a reservation (if not you might have a chance at the bar high chair).
Atmosphere clean and trendy décor.
Highly recommend coming here. Loved their Japanese food!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Adrian A.Downtown, Calgary, AB022Feb 15, 2023
