Disclaimer: this one's just for the Mother's Day Brunch.
Rod's is kind of an oddity: the main dining room is a train car attached to a quaint boutique hotel. I'm sure the restaurant itself is a fine attraction, though Mother's Day Brunch was held in a ballroom. Stepping into the ballroom and you can see why: they were clearly planning on a crowd of at least a hundred and packed the banquet well.
The food was good, if not great. Where this brunch excelled was the immense selection and friendly and efficient waitstaff.
The spread included a staffed omelette station, a selection of bagels with cream cheese and gravlax, a few salads, red and black (salmon?) caviar, corned beef hash, a raw bar with shrimp, oysters, and mussels, a variety of pates, hot pasta choices, two types of prepared salmon, beef tips in a mushrooms sauce, and a carving station with turkey, prime rib, and ham. Some dishes (the beef tips, the corned beef hash, the raw bar selections) definitely fared better than others (an over-cooked and pretty bland prime rib). And...that's just the mains. A dessert bar was located just off the ballroom and included crepes, puddings, a wide selection of pastries, ice cream, gelatin, mousses, and heaps of fresh fruit.
Not a cheap meal, to be sure, but a memorable one.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - 42010932249Mar 13, 2022
This place has a really classy ambiance with dark wood décor, stained glass ceiling, chandeliers, equestrian paintings, and old-fashioned furniture.
This is a nice steakhouse with reasonable prices for what you are getting, so it makes a good place for a special occasion without breaking the bank. The bread basket has a couple of different options. We got petite filets and split lobster mac n cheese and French fries.
The steak was perfectly cooked, a nice char on the outside and tender on the inside. It came with a cooked tomato that didn't add anything for me. The lobster mac n cheese was such a large portion it would have worked well as the only side. It came with huge chunks of lobster and get cheesy flavor. The fries were good as well.
We were so full after the exquisite meal we had no room for dessert. We did however look at the private rooms and book one for a future event. They have a train car which is a unique attachment.
Plenty of parking outside and seemed crowded, so don't forget to make a reservation first.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Lenore F.Warwick, United States01831Aug 10, 2021
We had the pleasure of going to Rod's for a Birthday Dinner on Sunday. There were 13 of us and our host reserved a private room which was a refurbished, old world, train car. It was so cool.
The food was great. I chose the beef barley soup for an appetizer and it was delicious.. I had the petite filet mignon and it was excellent. Like butter, one of the best I have ever enjoyed. For dessert I selected Rod's famous cheesecake. It was served with strawberries and absolutely yummy! It lives up to its name.
My husband had the North Atlantic Salmon and said it was very good. I would have given 5 stars however the reason I took off a star is because my husband was served his dinner after we were done eating our entrees. He had asked for no salt and pepper and his vegetables cooked soft. The waiter finally explained that they had accidentally prepared it with the seasonings and had to make another. He enjoyed it but the vegetables were not cooked as he had asked. So that was disappointing.
Still we would definitely go back. This is a multi- faceted establishment that makes your dining experience so enjoyable and very special.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 3, 2017
Came here for the last lunch on 2016. Love the train environment - very fancy looking place. Next time I want to sit in the train car turned restaurant.
We sat under the beautiful chandelier.
The food:
Crab bisque soup - the crab cake I. The soup was everything! Delicious!
Burger - ok not spectacular
Cream of vegetable soup - good
I want to come back for dinner!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Demar P.Queens, United States139265731Mar 18, 2020
Had a wonderful and romantic dinner at Rod's Steakhouse. From the unique experience of dining in a train car to the excellent customer service, this was one of the most memorable dinners to date. Upon entering the train car we felt as if we had stepped back into time. The decor was classic and elegant. We began our evening with Escargot, folllwed by two tasty porterhouse and Sirloin steaks paired with mushroom risotto and sauteed mushrooms. All of the food was tasty and the steak was quality. For desert we were treated to an entire birthday cake on the house. We highly recommend and would definitely come back again!!!

My wife and I recently visited this establishment for a nice Valentine's day dinner and Rod's certainly delivered. I requested seating in of of their train cars prior to our visit and I would recommend this option if you want something more intimate and quiet. The main restaurant is busy and can get quite loud, especially if there's live music playing. Not the most romantic environment so if you're looking for romance definitely request the train car.
As far as the food goes, it was pretty solid albeit a bit pricey but that's to be expected anywhere in the vicinity of Morristown. We split an escargot and my wife ordered a chopped salad and I ordered the wedge. FYI, the wedge salad is for bacon lovers for sure. This salad comes unmixed with a whole slice of blue cheese and a massive slap of bacon on top; yummy. For our entrees, I ordered the smaller size prime rib which was actually quite large; around 17 oz and my wife ordered the 9 oz filet. Both were very delicious. You also have to order your sides separately because your main courses do not come prepared with any. If you choose the baked potato I would suggest ordering just one; it was massive and the waiter played it down as much smaller. This item is easily shareable as well as any other side you choose to order.
The food here was solid; I wasn't blown away but it was generally good. The restaurant itself could also use some updating but the train car was a nice touch and definitely made for an excellent meal. Come here, enjoy the food, have a nice dinner and some drinks but just remember this experience doesn't come cheap. The wedge salad alone with that massive slab of bacon may be well worth the price of admission.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 7, 2016
Interesting place. Passed it many times throughout the years of travel but never there was a steakhouse there until the first visit the other night. Complimentary valet parking for a place with a "Morristown" address is a nice break to begin with. Going on a Saturday evening the place seemed to be very busy and it was good to have a reservation waiting for our table.
We were seated in the train car, which seemed to be quite a walk through a maze to get there but in reality was no so bad getting back to the restroom during the meal. The standout feeling was that of age -- well kept indeed, but still an unusually old feel to the place and quite cramped for seating. Service seemed very high end but the let down at the end was literally no one came back to get the bill after it was paid. Meaning it was paid in cash, no change was needed (thankfully), but we walked away after a long wait with no one coming back to check the bill.
The calamari starter with hot & sweet peppers and pomodoro sauce was quiet good, the caesar salad was okay, and I really enjoyed my choice of the rack of Colorado lamb with potato puree, vegetable tourne, and lamb jus.
Overall a solid experience but not enough to make me a fan.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Matt P.Chester, United States53954Jan 25, 2020
I really love this place. I found it probably two years ago and it's truly a gem in many ways. The atmosphere is grand and classic, and the spaces are activated with live music that adds a great energy to the establishment. The menu is largely a classic steakhouse menu which means most items are a la cart. Expect to pay $40-$50 for a steak with Sharable sides from $10-20. Without liquor you're spending $100 a head easily. For me, it's worth, but they do have an opportunity to nail service. The Wait staff seam tenured and friendly, but simply lacking some of the touches that makee service match the great atmosphere. It seems they work on a front waiter back Waiter system, but it's hard to tell. All I know is that there were five people at my table and no one who was clearly in charge. Drinks went empty, silverware was an after thought, and empty glasses and plates were slow to be cleared. When asked about specials the server proclaimed they were in the separate menu and pointed to it versus walking the table through it. My food was good with the exception of dessert. I had a pear and apple crisp. Apples were raw. Same as when I ordered it last time. The place is still wonderful and I'll return, but I wish they'd have a look at their business and make some
Changes. For the price point, I want this experience to not lack in any area. The Train car is very cool, and really a wonderful experience to try.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mike M.Boston, United States8952Jul 25, 2016
This is the kind of place where you have to watch your food.
Party of 15. I ordered a 26 oz porterhouse. It was cold, but alright. I took a few bites then went to the restroom. I came back and it was gone. No they didn't wrap it for me. No one even asked me if I was finished. it was just gone...garbage. Apparently they think its cool to just take people's food and throw it out without asking.
In the room they put us in, the metal grate was falling off of the baseboard heating unit. Some of the chairs were broken. In the entire time we were there I don't recall my water glass filled up once. The waiter routinely handed the other guests their hot food, tea, coffee, across the table (as opposed to putting it down in front of them).
Perhaps some lapse in service can be excused if the food is exceptional, but everything here from the ambiance to the selection is just banal...pedestrian...uninspired...boring. and, oh my god theres a fucking train car, which just reminds me of the pathetic fact that I've actually eaten better food in a train car.
This place probably deserves less than one star.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Tracy V.Verona, United States10114629Jan 17, 2015
I am disappoint.
Came here tonight for our anniversary with high hopes from all the rave reviews (and a few flops at other establishments on our previous anniversaries) and made a reservation in the train car.
When we arrived we were seated right away. The staff was friendly and the train car was an awesome experience. However the food really sucks. Like bad.
My filet (rare) was a tad overcooked and had a bit of a BBQ style char on the outside (I hate that and I've never had that while dining out). It was not tender and was very very dry!! I've never had a dry filet while eating out. Ever. I figured the sauce I ordered with it would have made it better but it never arrived at our table.
My potatoes au gratin were very chunky (aren't they supposed to be scalloped potatoes?) and lacked flavor. The casserole dish they were served in made the potatoes like molten lava on the sides and ice in the middle. At least they were edible compared to my filet. They were not what I expected from a place like this at all. They had somewhat of a Boston Market style quality to them is the best way I can put it.
My boyfriend enjoyed his porter house steak (aka man fuel) and the wine was very good (waiter chose a Merlot for us). He sampled my food and agreed with my criticism. We decided to skip dessert (on our anniversary!)
A few hours after arriving home, I decided I would give the potatoes we asked to have wrapped for us with the rest of the leftovers another go since I was hungry after barely eating the $200 meal my boyfriend and I just shared- they weren't wrapped for us. Just my lousy dry tree bark like filet. WHOMP WHOMP. I'm a yelper and when I am promised potatoes, I want my damn potatoes! Sucks.
TL;DR: I am extremely disappointed. I feel awful since my poor boyfriend spent so much money and went out of his way to plan a nice evening for us and the food just killed it. We won't be back-and I rarely ever dislike places.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
