Came for a classic Chinese dinner tonight and we were happy with the meal that we had tonight complete with winter melon soup (small) and peking duck (2 courses).
We started off with the Peking duck wraps and honestly, were a bit disappointed to see their skin having quite a few feathers still stuck! The pancakes are a little bit on the dry side but their pieces of duck skin still had a lot of meat (which I prefer). The duck lettuce wraps were great with plenty of duck meat, some veggies and crisps. The lettuce was also expertly trimmed making for a pleasant experience.
The winter melon soup was a family favourite being light, flavourful and filled with an assortment of ingredients. There were shrimps, chicken, pork, different veggies and of course, huge chunks of winter melon!
Spareribs with candied walnuts - the fam LOVED this as there was a plethora of crunchy and sweet walnuts. The spareribs were not too fatty and the sauce was the right amount, not too much.
Crabmeat with Greens - a little too saucy for my preference but the pea tips they gave us were fresh, sweet and well cooked. There was an adequate amount of crab meat on top but not enough to make a huge difference.
Scallops and egg white fried rice - our final dish of the night was a pale and boring looking fried rice that was a huge surprise for us as it was great in texture, nice and dry and had lots of large scallops. It was not too oily either and very flavourful.
Overall, a nice place to have a classy dinner with service that wasnt exactly on top of everything (had to ask for soup to be refilled/plates to be changed) but they were very nice and came when flagged down.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Nov 22, 2021Previous reviewWe came here for a special birthday celebration and although they were out of the peking duck when we got there, they had a special deal for crab which turned out to be one of the best dishes of the night! At only $24, we got a beautifully fried crab in ginger and green onion sauce. The only thing is that crab is quite messy to eat!
Of course, we added quite a few dishes including they Fuk Chow fried rice which was a huge portion, their eggs and shrimp stir fry which was a little bit oily but thats how they get the eggs so silky! Their fried chicken (chinese style) was juicy on the inside but the prawn crackers were limp and clearly not fresh. The sweet and sour pork was a great dish with lean cuts of pork dipped in a light batter and fried very well. The sauce was not too thick or sweet but tasted great with a little bit of rice. My dad's favourite dish was the eggplant and fish hot pot which contained fresh fish (skin and bones attached) compared to fried fillets with a generous amount of eggplant! Again, this dish was oily but that is expected for anything containing eggplant. I couldn't have a meal without greens so we got some baby greens with some bean curd. The sauce was a little gloopy but the dried scallops gave it great flavour.
Overall, the generous portions and reasonable prices are red star made this a wonderful visit. My only complaint is that many of the dishes were quite oily but again, this is something common in chinese food. I hope to try more of their dishes another day!Jan 1, 2020Previous reviewI think that my opinions about dim sum are starting to change as I am liking it more with the larger menus that are available at the restaurants in Vancouver. My family tradition is dim sum on a holiday and being New Years, it was expected but we decided to try out Red Star today. It is extremely busy at this location and we had to wait 20 minutes past our reservation time but it wasn't too bad.
Onto the food, we ordered quite a bit starting with the deep fried chicken (half). We really wanted some protein and although the half chicken was quite small and a little bit dry, the skin was very crispy. The congee was delicious without being too salty and had plenty of century egg as well as lean pork.
Onto the regulars, the cha siu bao, sui mai, shrimp rice rolls, beef rice rolls and meat pastry were all good with the rice rolls being nice and soft (better than other places i've visited recently). The BBQ duck pastry was crispy and the steamed meatballs were standard. The pea tips with bean curd was a small portion but the sauce wasnt unbearably thick and the pea shoots were very tasty.
Finally, the Lao Sa Bao took awhile to come but when it finally did, it was STEAMING hot with a delicious liquid yolk centre. This was one my may favourite parts of today's meal.
Overall, although the wait is long and expected, the food here is not too oily and heavy for dim sum. Their menu isn't too large but the dishes they have here, they do well. I also find that their service is quite good. The waiters/waitresses were in general polite and when we told them about a slow dish, it came out piping hot very quickly.Nov 20, 2016Previous reviewCame for a dinner here awhile ago and wanted to try their more expensive and "classier" chinese dishes. The prices are quite high and the dining room is always packed but their food is not too bad. We ordered their peking duck with both the crepe wraps and the lettuce wraps. Both were as expected and tasted good especially the lettuce wrap that wasn't too oily. The honey walnut fried prawns was quite good although i'm not a huge fan of the sauce soaked fried dishes, the walnuts were nice and fresh making it my favourite part. Finally, their lobster yee mein was extremely overpriced and a little boring but similar to the hot pot, it was still good.
Overall, their food is pricy chinese cuisine but the taste is not bad! Service on the other hand is quite pushy in trying to get you to order more/the more expensive dishes. - Neil Q.Old Toronto, Toronto, ON01Apr 2, 2024
The food is too greasy, I, my mom and her friends went there to dine, and we booked a room instead of eating outside ever since the summer for the chinese new year, however the waiter just took away our reservation and just gave it to others as they thought that the number of people we have had decreased. The food came up really slow and we have waited for 20 minutes and only 1 dish was brought up. My family and I never decided to go there ever again. The restaurant is missing a lot of decoration and looked almost exactly like back in the 1980s.

King of Crabs
In the world of seafood, King Crab is among the most decadent delicacies and among the multiple species of King Crab, red Alaskan King Crab is considered the very best
Vancouver, with one of the largest population of Chinese Americans and expats from Hong Kong, has been the top destination for King Crab feasts that have become so famous that even Hong Kong restaurants refer to the signature 3-style preparation as Vancouver-style.
However, in more recent times, due to supply chain issues and increased king crab demand from China, the previously abundant Vancouver king crab season has either been characterized by shortages, significant price inflation or both
Red Star is my top King Crab restaurant though I will admit this year the price came as a bit of sticker shock compared to years past
Paired with the best whole suckling pig that I've had in my life (serves with hoisin sauce and sugar on the side), this feast was a meal to remember
Thank you Red Star! I will forever dream of your unmatched Portuguese baked crab fried rice and salt and pepper deep fried crab!

Red Star Seafood Restaurant is more famous for their Peking duck and I would have known if I had internet access. However, according to locals, this was a good choice for the Live Alaskan King Crab, so we stopped here for our second King Crab of our trip.
The tanks are impressive and filled with live Alaskan King Crab as are all the top restaurants that serve this dish. It's typically served three ways now: steamed King Crab legs with garlic, deep fried King Crab Knuckles (or leg pieces) with salt and pepper, and finally fried rice Portuguese style with seafood and the crab roe. Our order:
Steamed King Crab with Garlic - much cheaper than Sun Sui Wah (about $10/lb less) and similar quality and preparation. If anything, I found the steamed crab here even better and not so underseasoned.
Deep Fried King Crab - very good and with more pieces than our disappointing portion size at Sun Sui Wah. Flavors were slightly better there, but it's a toss up.
Portuguese style fried rice with seafood and crab roe - the fried rice is good, but I'm surprised they don't choose another preparation style with the ingredients listed. I'm not a huge Portuguese style rice fan, but it was good.
Suckling Pig - we heard they had this and ordered a small platter. The skin was crispy but the meat was a bit disappointing. It obviously had been cooked and prepared much earlier. As I've ordered a suckling pig, I'd say this was over several days to a week old. Good, but pricey for the quality.
Free Range Chicken - excellent. Lean, tender and not dry at all. I love Chinese steamed free range chicken.
Overall, I'm disappointed I didn't try their Peking duck, but we had a very great King Crab meal here. It was about 10-15% cheaper than Sun Sui Wah and the quality was very comparable. That's what's so great about Vancouver....so much competition, even the best restaurants have many competitors undercutting their prices and keeping them on their toes.

As a dimsum lover, I was delighted when my co-worker suggested having dimsum here for a team get-together. There are quite a number of parking stalls reserved for Red Star in the complex's underground parkade, so one doesn't have to worry about finding parking.
We ordered half a duck, plus a variety of dimsum staples, including some of my faves: deep fried spring rolls (filled with prawn), siu mai (pork & prawn stuffing), har gow (fresh prawn inside), xiao long bao (soupy meat dumplings), and egg tarts. I also tried a duck-filled pastry for the first time, which I really liked! It tasted similar to the bbq pork-filled version that I like. The chrysanthemum tea we got was refreshing and aromatic, a good tea to help wash down the oilier dishes.
Overall, excellent service and delicious food. I'll definitely be back again!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Oct 23, 2022
Best meal of our Vancouver trip. We had a party of 16 so experienced a myriad of dishes, but sadly not one photo.
The Peking Duck and salted fish fried rice were the excellent standouts. Some dish with semi-crunchy egg noodles was my least favorite, but still good.
Such good service. And definitely a value play as it came out to about $25 per person.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - 5189328Feb 6, 2022
Wow! Amazing seafood, well prepared just as I remembered from my HK days.
Every time I come visit my parents in Vancouver, I make sure to organize at least two feasts at Red Star.
What I order is predictably the same with minor additions each time. Start with house shark fin soup, followed by whole Peking duck prepared two ways, steamed live shrimps, the king crab three ways. For a group of 5-6, that's plenty. The house deserts rounds out the meal.
Services are great because they have people!
Would vote for 5 star if there are more drinks choices and better wine list.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 28, 2021
Meeting up with friends we haven't seen for a while is always great. Nothing like going for a banquet style dinner at a chinese food restaurant.
We started off with their Peking (Beijing) Duck and loved the crispiness of the skin. It seemed liked it was smallish but the flavour made up for it. Next up is one of my favourite vegetables. Pea sprouts! Simply blanched and then cooked with garlic, it's sooooo good! Then the duck lettuce wrap is always a nice second part of the Peking Duck experience.
We also ordered what I call deep fried shrimp slathered in mayo and topped off with honey crusted walnuts. Might sound weird but the combo is delicious. Can't have a meal without sweet & sour pork! And their seafood e-fu noodles in a hot pot was excellent. Loved that they had it in a hot pot which kept it hot even at the end of our meal :)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 14, 2022
Dim sum take out on a Wednesday. Called in order for 5 items around 1130am and was told takes 20 to 30min.
Chicken feet. A little dry and tough but large portions
Har gow shrimp dumplings. Nice and savory
Beef balls. Pretty average.
Beef rice noodles. Nice and savory.
Chicken rice in sticky rice. Good flavoring but the rice really sticks to the leaves and hard to pull out.
No raddish cakes.
Limited lot parking and street.
Came to $49...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 1, 2022
Red star offers a more premium dining dim sum experience. We come here due to the higher quality and finer dining environment. Staff is almost always more friendly than some of the more popular dim sum spots in town (but this is almost like comparing a restaurant to a Cafe), and free underground parking is available. We have been here quite a few times throughout the years, and have enjoyed anything we have ordered off their dim sum menu. We'll continue to come whenever we are in town.
