Hands down the best beer store in the area... I have never seen such variety in the states... Good prices too. No frills, walk in garage, as it should be..
Good job LES/East village- you have eliminated another wonderful neighborhood business..Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 19, 2015
New Beer isn't the most welcoming-looking beer store in the city. It's a distributor, so it essentially looks like a warehouse with shelves for bottles set up. However this rough exterior hides that it's one of the friendliest places to buy beer in the city. I've gotten them to hold onto bottles for me several times over the years and they're always been happy to do so. The women who run this place are all very nice, especially if you chat them up.
There are some small deals to be had but otherwise they are on par for pricing. I wish they knew more about special releases, as they're usually out of the loop compared to other beer stores. The plus side of that is that sometimes they get releases later, after they're sold out elsewhere. Either way this is a good place to grab beer by the bottle and in bulk, with the increasing pretense that craft beer stores seem to be acquiring faster than shelf turds.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Henry M.Woodside, Queens, United States583209944Dec 11, 2016
I'd like to think of this as a Costco for beer - a beer wholesaler that sells beer at low prices. It may look sketchy because of the dim lighting, but it's a massive trove of all kinds of beers from around the world: German, Belgian, Australian, Japanese, etc. Domestics fill their own aisle. There are different kinds: ciders, ales, lagers, bocks, stouts, IPAs, etc. Except for the four refrigerators out in the front, the beer is not refrigerated (as a warning). There are a lot of domestic crafts on the shelves, and the mass produced stuff in the back. The place also has some mini kegs for sale.
The beer is really cheap. You can easily snag a bottle at $2-$4 bucks, depending on the quality, type, and country of origin. Six packs come at a discounted price, all going under $15 for domestic. A real gem compared to the other beer shops, bodegas/delis, bars you see in the city, especially Manhattan.
This place is ideal if you want to throw a house party that will have beer as its main beverage, and you have picky drinkers who want the craft stuff and you want to save on your wallet.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 16, 2010
I kind of want to give this place 4 stars because it's a bit dark inside and because they were closing at 6pm. However, I cannot get around their amazing selection of beers.
They had the largest selection I had seen of Hitatchio and Goose Island. They had a comparable to the best selection of Dogfish Head. They even had my favorite pumpkin ale in stock, which is a fall seasonal!
I appreciated that they had multiple sizes of some of the beers, which a lot of such suppliers do not have. In addition, they had some limited edition beers, which was exciting.
Cheaper than Bierkraft in Brooklyn!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Art L.NY, United States96461960Aug 9, 2016
New Beer Distributors is located just a block above Delancey Street on the west side of Chrystie Street. It's easy to get there by just taking the B or D to the Grand Street station or the J or Z to the Bowery Station. As the other reviewers noted, this is indeed a warehouse with wire shelves filled with all types of craft beers and some regular mass market beers. The front is reserved for the individual bottles and way back is storage for 12/24 pack cases of mass market beers.
You'll find an amazing selection of beers to the left and center rows which are sorted by country. To the right are all the American craft beers. There's a section with larger 22 ounce bottles. Most of the six packs are clearly labeled for sale by the six pack and sale by individual bottles. There are small white stickers stuck on the bottles and/or box that will tell you the price. I found that most of the American craft beers they carry go for $2.25 to $4, which is unbeatable in Manhattan or any of the outer boroughs for that matter. The 22 ounce beers go for anywhere between $6 to $20. Generally, the European and Japanese beers sell for $5 to $10 for individual bottles and much more for the larger bottles.
The one worker who was there helped me get two six pack holders and a box with box dividers for my purchase. He was helpful and not in the way as I examined their shelves.
When you compare what you are paying here versus going to a bar, there is no comparison. Most bars I've been with craft beers range from $7 to $12 for a good craft beer. Here's you'll pay 60 to 80 percent less.
All in all, if you are looking to try beers from around the world, there is no better place than to stock up here, mainly because you'll never have to regret buying a six pack again. One and done possible here as is building your own six pack. Therefore, NBD gets a huge thumbs up by the Cheap Guy!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 17, 2013
This is a beer geek's paradise. Others are unlikely to be impressed, as evidenced by the complaints in other reviews about decor, lack of refrigeration, glass window at payment counter, lack of staff roaming around to give you suggestions when you could easily just google the beer on your smartphone and find instant rankings/commentary.
So, if you're the former and want to find all sorts of exciting suds you've never heard of before, get thee to NBD. If you're fine with familiar microbrews or regular domestic lagers, stick to your local bodega.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - David B.Concourse, Bronx, United States7207Mar 5, 2015
I've been coming here for over a year now, and I have to say there is not one thing I would change about this place. It's just about perfect! I'm still learning about different craft beers, and at first the HUGE variety on offer here can be overwhelming. Thank god, then, that you can mix and match 6 packs! I've greatly increased my beer knowledge coming to this place, and have tried beers from countries all over the world I might never have discovered otherwise.
As a native New Yorker, I appreciate the no-nonsense set up here. No frills, no fancy signs or eager-to-please employees all up in your biz. Just a warehouse with a wide front gate completely open to the elements, and racks upon metal racks stocked to almost the rafters with nothing but beer! A lot of noise has been made about the nice sales ladies (and the occasional toddler or two) stuck behind the glass partition, but it is what it is. As cold as this winter has been, it makes sense to sit back there with the space heater going rather than standing out in the freezing cold warehouse for no reason.
Have never been to NBD in the dead of summer, so I can't speak to the lack of climate control. It's always been nice and refrigerator chilly outside whenever I manage to stop by, and I think the beers appreciate it!
I find the prices here to be the cheapest in NYC. Not cheap by the rest of the country's standards, perhaps--but definitely very reasonable prices for Manhattan. Not even the Whole Foods up the block can beat 'em: not in price, nor in selection. Although, sometimes you do find beers in that WFs that is not available at NBD. Rare, but it does happen.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Maki Y.New York, United States274244358Nov 13, 2014
The warehouse feel and the cashier behind bullet-proof glass did make me initially uneasy, but when I stepped farther in, I knew that the high ratings meant something. I came in on a mission to find a particular Japanese craft beer and found my mission a very easy one. As soon as I walked in, I realized that the beers were organized by country of origin, with signs marked clearly. I was very impressed with the variety.
Likelihood of another visit:
Very likely. I noticed prices were pretty low.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Liz F.Brooklyn, United States172Aug 1, 2014
I had a terrible experience ordering beer for work over the phone. The woman on the phone would not total up the order for me and ordered me to do it myself. They claimed they would do delivery. I paid by credit card. Then upon call back they claimed they did not know about the order. Then they claimed they would not do delivery. Then the woman on the phone told me "you talk like you're going to die". She told me she was going to cancel my order. Nothing made any sense and I was put on hold multiple times with no explanation for long periods of time. It is like bizarro world opposite land customer service over there.
Go in there and buy beer where you can point to what you want I guess? But communicating using words with these people is apparently a no go.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
