I went here in the late 90s for my diploma and now I am finding more reasons to attend. I went to see The Crucible here. We were in a theater upstairs. I found the space unusual because it was all around, which I think would make it harder to coordinate a play because there is no front or back. They seemed to make it work. The acting was decent and I love seeing the passion of the students. Definitely will be here again for events. And for the student, smaller class sizes, more one on one attention, close to downtown and LRT and an easy to maneuver campus make it worth the extra cost.

I began a Certificate program by taking a few online courses. The BlackBoard online learning platform was fairly easy to log into and use to submit and view assignments, have online discussions, and access resources. I decided to complete all my courses online and it was great so I didn't have to go into MacEwan except to write exams or do a presentation. The exams were after work hours so it was convenient for me working and taking courses. The buildings were easy to find classrooms and I only ever bought food from the Tim Hortons and it could be a long line.
Most of the instructors were fairly good to reply back promptly when I had questions or concerns. There was one instructor that wasn't very good and when I shared my concerns with the Department, they were very open to hearing my feedback. The only issue I had was with the admissions department who act like they don't care about providing decent service and walk around with the ho hum attitude.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Francesca K.Edmonton, AB6414282Mar 24, 2010Updated review
This campus location is awesome. There are many places to curl up for a nap, sit in the sun with friends, grab a coffee or study in silence.
This campus is huge and bright. I really miss it actually.
I went here for two years before moving to the big orange campus on the west end and I certainly miss it very much.
Classes, professors and education criteria aside, this campus rocks for many reasons that ACTUALLY matter to students.
The cafeteria is massive and has more options than any other campus under the Grant MacEwan name. You can be healthy (Subway) or greasy (Pizza 73) or drunk (Towers Bar).
If you head to the 2nd floor you can find a pathway between 2 buildings where you can lay in the sun like a cat and soak up the warmth. Purrr...
This campus is pretty new and it still has that feeling. It is clean and easy to get around as well. There is a great gym here as well that can be visited by students in off peak hours.
I enjoyed my two years at this campus, and eventually, all the Grant MacEwan schools will be at this location, which will be really nice. I don't think I can extend my schooling long enough to go back downtown, but I sure wish I could.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Feb 13, 2010Previous reviewThis campus is meant to house all the arts students that belong to MacEwan which is a very interesting concept. The success of this concept is something I am sometimes unsure about. I am in a communications program, so apparently I am lobbed in with arts students. This school is filled with art displays and music; if you need to study in a quiet place, you will have to find a chair in the back of the library or go off campus.
The school has a very open and airy feeling. The glass ceilings let in all the light, and you can see all the way up to the fourth floor from any one of the landings on the second floor.
The cafeteria here is horrible. The same bottle of Coke that you can buy in a vending machine for $2.00 is $2.50 in the cafeteria. They also have a really crappy selection. If you are trying to eat healthy, you might as well avoid it all together. There are only two or three small healthy options (like yogurt, apples or oranges) and there are no healthy meal options.
Thumbs Down!
Other than the crappy food situation, I really like this campus. It may be a little louder than my liking, but that is what makes this campus unique and exciting. - Jul 20, 2014
First, I didn't attend this university.
I was in Edmonton for a wedding with my giant family. We were looking for somewhere affordable to stay. During the summer, the residence is available to the public for renting! My gang booked a 4 bedroom suite. It had 2 bathrooms(awesome), seating area and a kitchenette(microwave, large fridge and stovetop).
They turned it into a regular hotel, towels and all! It's nothing fancy, but it did the job. Free wi-fi too!
A great location! You're within walking distance of all the necessities.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Oct 2, 2014
While I've never taken a course here, I have been here from the time when I was a child and it was Grant MacEwan Community College until now for various reasons: swim camp, swim meets, guest lectures, special events, book launches and more! The buildings are all new and useful. The downtown campus is very well located for transit access and there is ample paid parking as well as walking paths to get here.
It all feels relatively new and useful as a venue for events and activities.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dominique F.Saint Albert, AB09Dec 14, 2015
Great school, love it! Warm, open learning environment. Teacher seem to actually care about your learn in process!
Side note, the lady who works at the coffee shop in building 5 is rocking a permanent nasty attitude. It's a huge disappointment that the coffee shop in that building is over priced, terrible coffee (terrible being an understatement, and her attitude is sub-par. A shame really.. but this doesn't affect my thoughts that Macewan is amazing!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Cammy L.Calgary, AB702013Jan 24, 2017
School environment is great and staff are very helpful. Took one star off because there is a lack of enough study space but I'm sure that will change with the new building opening up next year! Also wish they had more food options and more class choices. Hoping that macewan will have more departments that become established!

I have been attending MacEwan's Centre for the Arts campus for over three years now, and it's been a great experience. This is a unique, smaller campus in an orange building on the West End by Jasper Place. Yes, the area is shady, surrounded by porn shops and dive bars, but for some reason I like it, because this neighbourhood has so much character.
When you walk into this campus, you'll notice that its an arts school right away, because many arts pieces are constantly on display all over the campus, and they are always changing. My favourite one of all time was the little boy burried up a giant pile of cupcakes.
There are so many interesting programs at this school like design, music, dance, and journalism. I am in the Professional Writing program, and I have learned so much over the past 3 years. The instructors are awesome, and virtually all of them work in the industry, so they have real-world experience.
The library here is smaller, but it is a good place to study or get work done. There's lots of great books and magazines, including Bitch, The Walrus, and The Atlantic. It's also nice to have unlimited access to the Mac computers, which have all the Adobe programs installed.
The cafeteria isn't the best, and that is not because the food sucks (it's actually pretty good), but the prices are outrageous, but that is Aramark's fault.
If you're interested in any of the programs offers at this college, I highly suggest checking out the website and going to an orientation. The orientation I attended actually convinced me that the program what perfect for me.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 14, 2008Previous reviewMacEwan is a very good College. I actually attend the West End campus for the Professional Writing program, but I've had many night classes at this downtown campus.
This is still a fairly new and modern-looking building. It can get confusing at times, because it's actually several buildings all attached to one another.
The library here is awesome. There are probably at least 60+ computer terminals, and they all have Internet access. There's at least 10+ Apple computers here too, and they all have the Adobe design programs on them.
The food court used to be really bad, with only the Aramark cafeteria, but now there's Booster Juice, Pizza 73, Tim Horton's, and Subway. The convenience store has just about everything you can think of, even sandwiches, salads, and wraps from Zenari's.
I've found student services to be quite helpful, and you can even buy discount movie tickets at the SA office. There's usually one influential person invited to the College every year. I've seen both David Suzuki and Margaret Atwood speak. I've also seen a show by Wayne Lee the hypnotist and a presentation by a famous ghost tracker.
The bookstore is pretty expensive for anything, including textbooks (even used). I'd suggest using the Used Textbook Registry--you can find this at the SA office or website. - Jack G.Edmonton, AB19834488Nov 10, 2009
As of September 24, 2009 this college became a university. I know a lot of people who wish this change took place sooner because they would rather be at Grant MacEwan than the U of A. I would agree.
When you are at Grant MacEwan you do not even feel like you are in a school. It is very modern looking and it's large amount of windows makes everything seem less stressful. I really like how they have small classes instead of huge auditoriums, it allows for a better learning experience. It has one huge library and a bunch of small study rooms if you are having group study sessions. The best part about this university is that it allows for a more intimate setting. You aren't just a random face out of 300 in a classroom and your professor will actually remember you. It is also easier to meet people. It also has a fitness center and indoor swimming pool and about a year ago they added a nursing building.
There is so much talk about how a degree from the U of A will be better for you in the long run but I think you will get the better education with a more enjoyable experience at Grant MacEwan. It also has a lot of cool down to earth professors that make going to class desirable.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kerri W.Banff, AB41231192Oct 12, 2008First to Review
This is an excellent post secondary school. When I first attended school here, it was classified as a community college. It still has that feel to it but now offers university degrees. There are so many options available now - you can start a degree program here and transfer, or complete your degree at MacEwan.
They offer a number of diploma and certificate programs that are in high demand. I took Journalism here about a decade ago and am looking to go back and take Holistic Health.
Classes are not held in auditoriums and the teachers don't require microphones. The instructors generally are interactive and more than willing to answer any questions you may have. They also have scheduled office hours if you need to figure something out. There's a huge LRC (Learning Resource Centre) with computers, books, microfiche, anything you'd expect from a library. There's also a room where the CML (Computer Managed Learning) tests are taken. The staff are great and can help you find what you need. Their system for searching the LRC through the computer is very user friendly as well.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
