I just wanted to up my star rating to reflect the store's great customer service. I went in last night and picked up a few things, but discovered the debit machine was unavailable when I got to the counter.
Since I didn't have any cash on me, I was ready to just put my things back and head home. But the owner insisted that I simply bring in cash the next day. Just got back from dropping off the money to the store and happy to have the store as a neighbourhood fixture.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Mar 8, 2012Previous reviewUnlike Mike B., I tend to not really do any extensive shopping here. Based on what I've seen, I wouldn't be disappointed if I needed to pick up a healthy number of basics.
But the truth is that I tend to only go here when I'm in need of a junk food fix. (Which is probably too often and has also probably caused the staff here to think I need help.) And they fix me. They fix me right up.
Mostly, I love that they have Pop Shoppe drinks and Magzy's Kettle Corn. That alone makes my Hydrostone rent worth it. Sometimes I think the price is too high, but that's likely more a product of me feeling the need to buy a jug of skim milk almost every time I go, to make sure the cashier knows that, in addition to the chips and chocolate, I'm also *a bit* of a health nut.
As others have mentioned, everyone is super friendly and the place is crammed tight. A great store and yet another example of what makes this neighbourhood so great. - Mike P.Houston, United States01May 15, 2024
I am looking for place where I can find Viagra, or something similar. Is this a convenient store that can handle what I need. I have been stuck on a ship for 4 months, and I only get 1 day in port. I gotta have some fun.

They claim they have everything and if they don't, they will get it for you. I don't know if this is true, but it is possibly the friendliest convenience store I have ever been to. The owner seems to know all of his regulars by name and is super happy to see everyone who walks in.
There's so much stuff in there that you can barely move around, but that's okay: you need it? they've got it! Bonus: he has a backup generator for when hurricanes knock the power out and you need ice cream.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Vickie D.North End, NS75Jun 21, 2012
One of the perks of living in the good old North End, is having this little meeting spot as my neighborhood " corner" store.
Always a friendly greeting, and by the second time you pop in they know you by name.
The sales are always a surprise and great! Many times better then local grocery stores.
If you want it, they have it, or will get it.
As Lee ( the owner) always says......
ONLY AT THE HYDRO!!!!!
Love this place.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mike B.Halifax, NS4210043Mar 4, 2012
One of the perks of living in the Hydrostone is the proximity to the Hydrostone Groceteria. It is one of the friendliest corner stores I've ever been to. Considering it's a corner store, one would expect higher prices for regular necessities that you could get at one of the larger grocery stores for much cheaper but the HG actually has a leg up on them with some things.
For example, breakfast cereal. While the selection isn't huge, they sell all of them for $3 a box. That includes Mini Wheats, something you usually pay $5 or more for unless they're on sale. Other canned and prepackaged items also can be surprisingly priced as well in comparison to other places. There's usually a sign outside the store with the weekly special but I'm pretty sure the prices for these items never changes.
While the store is pretty small and packed, there is surprisingly a lot of stuff in here. What you won't find is fresh produce and other uncommon items but there's a lot in the way of treats, like chocolate, candy and chips, plus quick supper food items, necessities, lotto, and whatever you'd expect at a corner store. But I'm going to return back to the breakfast cereal and the fact that Mini Wheats are $3 a box!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Caitlin J.San Francisco, United States08Oct 7, 2018
Friendliest corner store with a wide selection! As one other commenter mentioned, I too have forgotten there is no credit card, and I couldn't believe when he said I could just come back later. We are happy to have this gem in our neighbourhood and are very happy to support local.

I work and live in the Hydrostone and just discovered this place a month or so ago, how I didn't know about it I dunno. But yeesh the egg salad sandwiches have been all I talk about (seriously, NO ONION-perfect) and the specific chip and pop options are all I need for a super filling lunch at 6 bucks or so. Their specials are suh gud (chocolate milk for $2) and it's a comfort knowing a can of Dr Pepper is 5 minutes away at any time. Love you, Hydrostone Groceteria. I'm not sure how to say your name, but, love you.
