The Elderberry House, a 5-Diamond Restaurant is named for the elderberry bushes covering the surrounding grounds. "I have the simplest of tastes, I only want the best." These words, compliments of Oscar Wilde, can be found over the kitchen door at The Elderberry House Restaurant on the grounds of Château du Sureau. They seem to sum up the exquisite experience of dining at The Elderberry House and the adjacent Château, where the vast culinary talents of Executive Chef Ethan DeGraaff and Culinary Director Chef Chris Flint now reign supreme. Dinner at The Elderberry House is a thrill for the senses, showcasing seasonal ingredients from local farms. Our tasting menu is designed to give you a sense of place with the intention of creating something delicious and beautiful. We graciously invite you to our home for an incredible experience!

I can't stop recommending this place to my friends!
I made the reservation and stated it is for hubby's birthday, and they customized the menu with his name on top wishing him a happy birthday. When we arrived, they sat us down by the fireplace. It was so perfect and romantic.
We chose the 3-course set, but they provided an appetizer from the culinary team before the first course, and a homemade bread in between the first and second course. The bread was a little crispy outside and fluffy inside. I couldn't stop eating.
Every course was just flavorful and creative. They claim their style is French-Californian, but I suspect that they add a little Japanese style in their cuisine as well. Just subtle and beautiful.
I especially like their warm hospitality. They surprised us with two chocolate tarts and a candle to celebrate hubby's birthday. We feel welcomed and cared for. We will definitely come back. It was a very special and memorable experience.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 1 - Jan 27, 2024
If I could give this place a thousands gold stars I would. This is the only high end restaurant I believe in Oakhurst. Iykyk.
Every single bite was incredibly decadent and flavorful, nothing disappointed. I came here to celebrate my birthday after Yosemite and this was the perfect dinner to finish the night.
Even the butter on the bread tasted like heaven.
Expect a country side french vibe with a comfy air l. The service was amazing but keep in mind being a more high end establishment they already added in tip to your receipt. I didn't add anymore as it would've been over 50% in tip... (tip culture is insane). !
Overall the view, vibes and food were amazing.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Robin D.Raleigh, United States12377Apr 19, 2024
Excellent food, cocktails, and ambience! We enjoyed the 3 course menu with wine pairings. Also sampled a few delicious cocktails. The presentation was impeccable as was the service.

Oh my goodness, we felt truly spoiled by our experience. Wonderful food and exceptional service. If you can spring for it, I highly encourage you to try the wine pairing. Not only does it greatly enhance the flavor, it's impressive to hear the server's extensive wine knowledge. Beautiful place, but definitely spendy!

The Elderberry House is such a fabulous restaurant in the greater Fresno area. In less than a hour's drive, you really feel like you're transported somewhere else when you're here - the grounds are so well manicured and have the stylings of an Italian villa! You really feel like you're in a different country! The service is absolutely incredible - personalized menus with consideration for dietary restrictions, non-pretentious and accessible service, and engaging staff all make it an incredible experience! The food is the best. The BEST! Everything is presented to beautifully and the wine pairings just make everything taste that much better! If the weather is nice, it's wonderful to take your dessert out on the patio and enjoy the outdoor scenery and lights. This place is my go to when I want to feel spoiled and indulgent, with without feeling like I need to look or act a certain way to be treated well. No snobbery, just good service and great food!

Don't go here hungry cause all you're getting is ambience the food is undercooked and lacks flavor. The ribeye steak was so rare You had to cut it into small pieces to choke it down and then the dessert was some chocolate cookie with pine tree on it,very gross. It took 2.5 hours for three courses. One person in our group left early. The room was cold and uncomfortable if you do decide to go there and waste your money, bring a jacket and your patience because you'll be sitting around doing nothing.

We stopped in here to have a drink at the bar. When you walk in you instantly can tell that it's a special place. It feels like it was built 100 years ago. The bartender has the fantastic mixologist vibe. They even make Smokey drinks which my wife loves. I'm guessing that this has to be the best selection of both wine and booze in the entire town. The staff was also exceptionally nice. We are planning to come back for dinner soon.

Erna's Elderberry House, Oakhurst: 6 July 2023 (5 of 5)
A beautiful European oasis, tucked away on a peaceful hill, Elderberry House is an absolute gem. There are very few 'good' eateries in Oakhurst. Erna's Elderberry House is the best - and we are excited to know that they recently started doing Happy Hours on Thursdays. This is our first Happy Hour visit there, and we brought a guest from out of town. We were extremely pleased with both the service and the food. Both Gaby & Andrea were excellent in their service. The food was tasty and well thought out. My guests thoroughly enjoyed their drinks and were very pleased with my choice of establishment. We're looking forward to sharing Erna's with our visiting friends and relatives. Cheers to Erna's. Keep up the good work.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 23, 2021Previous reviewErna's Elderberry House, Oakhurst: 23 October 2021
Dining at Erna's Elderberry House is like enjoying art on a plate. Each plate of food arrived at our table looking better than the last. The food was indescribable, but here are a few choice adjectives - delectable, yummy, flavourful, rich, robust, absolutely gobsmacking good. They started us off with a treat from the chef - Ahi Tuna.
Ahi Tuna (chef's treat): The Ahi Tuna was rich in flavour. It has a little heat and a nutty taste.
House Bread: Lovely warm bread but I tasted a bit too much dough. It has good seasoning - and the olives gave it that extra oomph.
Soup du Jour: Perfect on a chilly evening. A little heat - a lot of taste. The addition of coconut makes this simple soup even more flavourful.
Heirloom Tomato (kern farm arugula, goat cheese, almond, aged balsamic, basil): Not my order - but I was told it was good.
Calvisius Caviar & Blini (Siberian royal caviar, sour dough blini, crème fraîche, chive): Oh my, I could have just this for dinner and I'd be happy.
La Belle Farm's Foie Gras (summer stone fruit, foie gras mousse, almond crumble, aged balsamic): I find it too salty for my sensitive tongue but our friends loved it.
Free Range Bison Short Rib (house ground polenta, red cabbage, carrot, arugula): The 'mmm...mmm...' sounds coming from our friend told me everything.
Brandt Farm's Beef Ribeye (pommes purée, green bean, mushroom, cipollini, pimento béarnaise): I didn't try this but was told its meat was succulent - and the greens married well with the meat.
Wild Alaskan Halibut (winter pumpkin medley, couscous, brown butter cloud, arugula): The fish was excellent - the seasoning was just right. The delicate fish tasted like it just jumped out of the water - and onto my plate. I find the cauliflower could use another minute - but the couscous made its mark. I wish there was more sauce for my dinner choice though.
California Gelato (pistachio ensemble, strawberry. basil): Not my dessert - but my dining companions loved it.
Valrhona Chocolate Torte (chocolate textures, walnut, mission fig, chocolate mint): Golly, this slightly bitter chocolate torte is so rich - it sticks to the roof of my mouth. I'm not complaining though. The tart raspberry coupled with the sweet figs was a great combination. One item I couldn't taste or find is the chocolate mint.
I had decaffeinated coffee - the slightly bitter coffee was a perfect ending to my 'so-sweet' dessert.

Price: It's worth every penny savedJun 21, 2021Previous reviewA beautiful European oasis, tucked away on a peaceful hill, Elderberry House is the best sit-down restaurant in Oakhurst thus far. An absolute gem. Andrea, our server was very charming. She introduced the dishes as they were set down, but did not linger like the server we had during our previous visit.
The food was smashing - every bite made us want for more. My dinner tasted like abalone in a scallop body. There isn't one complain about the food or the service this evening. Our out-of-town guests gushed over the food and have already made plans for another visit.
Note: It was our 30th wedding anniversary celebration, and our friends 39th year. When Andrea brought the plates of desserts, the words 'Happy Anniversary' was written on our plates. THAT is so thoughtful of the establishment.

I've heard and read about this place and am curious to see what a chateau might look like - and I feel that Elderberry House in Oakhurst may just satisfy my curiosity. Elderberry House is located just 20-minutes from the South Gate of Yosemite Park.
Sunday Brunch: 5-course tasting menu at $68 per person. The price is steep - but an absolute 'must visit' with that special person for a special celebration. It was very clever of them to use Valentine's Day (money-making day by marketing companies) as the theme for the weekend. It's amazing to see what some companies do to lure in customers. They decorated the dining room with fresh roses hung from the ceiling, a pair of roses sat in a small vase at each table - and the fireplace was ablaze.
This was an epic experience - a feast for the eyes, the palate, and the soul. The team try to create an elegant European atmosphere. Now, not having visited Europe - I could not compare, but I felt that they have gone over the top on this one. Even though the restaurant has received numerous honors and awards - some of the things they did was not at the top of my ranking.
Food: Overall, the presentation was beautiful - but all three of us had mixed reviews about the taste and texture.
Blood Orange Frappe (kumquat, coconut winter flora): I thought this chilled drink was a very nice opener to what's to come. It was refreshing - a little sweet, a bit tangy - but a nice palate cleanser. (5 or 5)
Crêpes Suzette (spiced Chantilly, local pecan, raspberry): Crêpes Suzette is a French dessert but today, they served this dish as a starter. I'm not complaining. I enjoyed my dish though the spiced Chantilly was quite
bitter if eaten on its own. (4 of 5) One point off for the semi warm food.
Local Asparagus Frittata (herb infused chèvre, pea shoot, first of the year tomatoes): This dish looked very elegant to me - but my guest thought it lacked seasoning.
Highland Farm's Poached Egg (Yukon potato ecrasse, baby leeks, house cured salmon, dill creme): A work of art - I was enjoying looking at my plate of food and had to force my hands to dig my fork into it. The poached egg broke apart to reveal a beautiful bright yolk. I thought the house cured salmon smelled a tad fishy but love the potatoes. (3.4 of 5) One point off for the semi warm food.
Pesto Glazed Free Range Chicken (anson mill's polenta, local carrot, bell pepper, broccoli, brussels sprouts): I did not try this dish. My guest mentioned that there were some unrecognizable items on her
plate. Now, for me - knowing what I is very important so I feel for her.
Herb Roasted Rack of Lamb (pommes purée, local asparagus, radish, cauliflower, tapenade demi-glaze): The lamb was delicious - it had a nutty crunch, and was superbly done. Everything on this plate worked well together, including the potato puree, which I thought helped me finish my vegetables. (4 of 5) One point off for the semi warm food.
Dulcey Chocolate Semifreddo (strawberry, almond, mint): Here's a shout of praise - the finale. It was so good, I wanted to lick my plate. (5 of 5)
Coffee: Tasted watered-down.
Croissant: Yummy
Butter & Home-made Jam: Loved it.
Location: It's in a serene location, overlooking matured trees and shrubs. Don't drive too fast or you might miss it. Using the GPS helps.
Parking: Plenty of FREE parking.
Service: I am at odds with this. When we called to make our table reservation, we were greeted on the phone by Rani. It was during meal time but she was very accommodating. She did not rush us into reserving a table - but took time to ask about food allergies and if we're celebrating an occasion. She also invited us on a tour of the chateau. (5 of 5)
We drove over 3 hours to get there. We were early, but I rang the doorbell and Kari opened the door for us. She showed us to the back garden and invited us to walk around the grounds. When it was time to sit down, I tried to open the door... it was locked. I peeked inside the dining room and could see they were already seating guests. (3 of 5)
During the service, Lauren, our server wanted to take away our guest's frappe. When she was stopped, she cackled her way into the kitchen. Maybe she was just, nervous but the harsh laughing sound made us uncomfortable. (1 of 5)
Elderberry House was opened in 1984 by Erna - who hailed from Vienna, Austria. The establishment offers fine-dining experience. For years, Erna's restaurant has consistently won Forbes Travel Guide's four-star award - the only restaurant in the Central Valley to do so.
So, would we return? Well, the food was mostly good - but the food temperature was not quite right. All the hot dishes were lukewarm. The cold dishes were excellent though. We all felt that the service could use some polishing. They were trying too hard and it showed. - Oct 11, 2023
Cozy but elegant restaurant, staff was welcoming and attentive. Food was good, favorite bites were the tomato amuse bouche and the sauce from the halibut dish. Cocktails were solid and the corn dessert was just the right amount of sweetness. Overall definitely worth trying.

It felt like a treat just driving and walking up to this beautiful property! We went to the left inside to eat at the cavern. More casual instead of the pre fixe menu towards the right, but I'm interested in giving that a try in the future! The staff are very friendly and kind. They seem interested in giving you a good experience! We demolished the beef short rib plate, it was perfectly put together! We also really enjoyed the butternut squash bisque. This place is special!
