This place has been closed by the health authority for the second time due to severely lacking sanitation practices (you can see that http://www.healthspace.ca/Clients/VIHA/VIHA_Website.nsf/Food-Frameset unfortunately it doesn't show further back than 4 inspections, but you can email VIHA if you don't believe me).
The most recent inspections list a wide range of violations related to the containers used to store the food.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Shayla S.Victoria, BC2343Nov 7, 2015
Second time eating here. Ordering Wor Wonton Soup, BBQ Pork Chow Mein & Sweet & Sour pork.
Wor Wonton Soup - definitely not my favorite. Wontons had a weird taste (to me) and there was not many vegetables or other meats in the soups like I'm accustomed to. Also not a fan of squid...was a bit offputting to find in my soup.
BBQ Pork Chow Mein - VERY yummy! Probably my favorite chow mein I've ever had. Not too greasy.
Sweet & Sour Pork - My favorite thing about their S&S Pork is they dont give you a bunch of filler vegetables - it was just delicious pork! Had this the first time I was here as well, not disappointed.
Overall a great experience except for the soup - which while tasty, was not great.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Geoff M.Victoria, BC127Nov 19, 2017
I've been ordering here for quite a few years and they did go through a bit of a rough spot but I think now they're back in the saddle (when they removed the combo meals that was dissapoiting as well). Easily the best chinese food in Victoria and I wish more people would check it out. The sweet and sour chicken is unmatched, the vegetables always taste fresh and not soggy or tasteless like most other places and the dan dan noodles are amazing. Its kind of situated in a weird spot in the middle of a suburb, but the waitresses have always been kind and it's usually pretty quiet. Buy yourself a big bowl of wonton soup for 8 dollars and go there to study, seriously. Best study spot.

Sadly, after my last experience here I have to downgrade to three stars. The sweet and sour sauce was all sweet, no sour, and cloyingly oversweet at that. The wonton soup broth literally had barely anymore discernible flavour than hot water.
The chow mein was fine, and the ginger chicken and chop suey were still outstanding, but overall it just really didn't live up to the 4 star review.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Dec 7, 2009Previous reviewEast Garden is a great little secret restaurant tucked away in a neighbourhood off Hillside Avenue, close to the mall, on Belmont. It's located in a strange building - sort of a house, but with a car park.
Anyway, everyone that works there is really friendly. I'm battling a bad cold, and I was craving good, spicy Szechuan so much (I swear it felt therapeutic) that I actually ate here three times in one week. Heh.
The not so great dishes would include the sweet and sour pork, and any of the breaded chicken dishes - but these are my personal preference, and they just don't feel as authentic to me. I personally love the Tan-Tan noodles (thin noodles with spicy peanut sauce, green onions and ground peanuts), the spicy ginger chicken, the spicy ginger beef, and so much more. The chop suey is always really fresh, with a huge selection of veggies (baby bok choy, red pepper, onion, celery, bamboo, water chestnut, broccoli, carrot, and more) in a very garlicky sauce. Their egg rolls are good - the flattish kind, in the thin, flaky pastry, without being overly greasy. They include free fortune cookies with each order. Oh, and their hot and sour soup is almost - ALMOST- TOO hot for me. It's delicious.
Whenever I go in there to pick up, or to dine in, they're all really nice and seem happy for the business. The prices are about average, but the food is above. - Scott H.Victoria, BC055Dec 24, 2018

This place used to be my favourite Chinese place. Sadly it seems to have gone downhill in the last couple years.
Our chow mein was so under cooked that most of it seemed like it never even touched the water. All the sauces were too sweet and the new lemon chicken sauce is like the lemon filling from a doughnut. Never again...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mark R.Victoria, BC010May 14, 2017
Seeed to go downhill for a while, but the flavours and quantity of food are great again. This will probably be my favourite restaurant again if the quality is consistent.

Quick, good service and pretty well priced. In person dining is very quiet as they clearly specialize in delivery and take - out.

This is one of the most disgustingly dirty restaurants I have ever been to. The food was just ok but it was the lack of cleanliness, decor, and customer service that was a complete turn off.
There has been absolutely no effort made in decor/atmosphere. Clearly, it has not been kept up since the 1960's since the bathroom for example had ugly and old flooring, walls, etc. with tape holding part of the floor together. Haphazardly placed photos are on one wall as you come into the restaurant, there is a small cut-out area up in the dining room which is cluttered with junk, the table beside us had a table cloth that was ridiculously wrinkled, the old plastic sun-dampening coating on the windows was terribly crackled...I could go on.
The first thing I noticed as we sat at the table was a disgustingly crusty container-with-lid that contained the remnants of a hot sauce. It had obviously been there and not cleaned for a very long time. I handed it to the server and told her it was disgusting. She never apologized for it and did not replace it. I got the feeling she would stick the dirty one back on our table after we left. The table itself was dirty around the napkin dispenser and soy sauce container--it was obvious they only ever wiped up to them and not under them. The napkin dispenser was equally dirty and with lots of finger print marks--again, obviously not cleaned in ages. The window ledge beside us was similarly dirty. If it was this dirty at our table, I hate to think of the state of their kitchen. I would have gotten up and left but my parents insisted on staying out of politeness.
I will NEVER go back!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Janine M.Victoria, BC01Apr 14, 2015
This place used to be good but now they have changed owners and it shows. I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt for a few months but it is just getting worse. Not only are the sauces FULL of extra sugar (I am assuming to mask subpar ingredients) but they have stopped doing their individual Szechuan dinners. Last straw was when I tried to order dinner for myself and could not have it delivered because it was not over $25. The website clearly days FREE delivery if over $25. Not no delivery if under $25. In the past (with the old owners) if it was under $20 they would add a delivery charge (maybe $2). But now they won't even deliver if it is under $25. I am one person and now I have to order enough dinner for 3 people in order to have it delivered? It is so obvious that they are just being cheap about everything. Last chance and once again they blew it.
