=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE
In the wide spectrum of options of the Metrotown food court, Chef Tony provides a relatively low-cost yet tasty option!
=== 2. FOOD
Dim Sum Combo ($9.50): your choice of white rice, fried rice, or noodles with six pieces of dim sum. The fried rice is pretty good. I'm always one for choice - the dim sum is smaller than what you get in the Chef Tony restaurant but just as tasty!
=== 3. SERVICE
It worked for me in English and I overheard it work well in Mandarin also. There's often a short line of sorts, but it moves fairly quickly.
=== 4. ENVIRONMENT
It's as good as it gets in the Metrotown food court - wide, open, and bright. It's good for small and large groups, for wheelchairs and baby strollers. Parking is plentiful in the parkade.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Apr 30, 2021
So much hype, so much anticipation, so much money. Tiny morsels, nothing spectacular.
Siu mai with truffle tasted like a standard siu mai with no truffle. Sticky rice could've done with more filing. Way too much gummy glutinuous rice to filling ratio. Deep-fried tofu with salt was chewy, shrimp and matsutake dumpling and white egg custard tart is not something you would talk about. The egg tart was soggy.
All the talk about quality and you get what you pay for, I totally disagree.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Steffi Anne M.Surrey, BC042Jan 31, 2023
Dimsums are alright. Nothing special. Just a regular fastfood dimsum. If you want a quick meal, there are other fastfood places around it you could choose.

Dim sum haven inside the biggest mall in Burnaby,It is located by the food court.
I've seen this before previous occupant was a thai restaurant.I never really pay attention because everytime i was there i go for burger,poutines or a quick fried chicken.
Finally this day i decided to try.Very clean,crew were bilingual,foods from the display looks so sppetizing.
Pricewise they are very affordable.I tried the steam beef rice with 3 dimsum...i paid over $10 including a bottle of pop....got the shrimp and matsutake dumplings,one deep fried shrimp and black truffle dumpling and my last choice was the steam bun filled with salty eggyolk lava...waiting period is morethan ten minutes....
I was surprise that the foods were good,dimsum were a bit small,but the taste is very very good,,,...
Now goodbye burger...good bye fried chicken hello chef tony.....Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - 215218930739Dec 14, 2017
This is probably 3.5 stars.
I was told the dim sum here was good.
I am generally wary of food court food, and dim sum is low on my list to have in a food court. I am used to the delicate skins of dim sum dumplings and the finer taste usually found in the better dim sum restaurants in Asia. While the dumplings in most dim sum places in Vancouver are huge, I don't really like them as the skin is usually very thick. It is more of quantity over quality.
So I tried the 6 dim sum pieces combo with the fried noodles. The noodle was dry and hard at times so that was disappointing. As some Yelpers mentioned, the size of the dim sum was on the small side but it would be considered normal size in Asia.
The 6 different pieces of dim sum were surprisingly good.
What I had:
- shrimp dumpling (har gow) - thin skin which did not break apart and was tasty
- mushroom dumpling - again, thin skin which held together and tasted ok
- truffle and pork dumpling (siew mai) - not bad, i could taste the truffle
- fried radish/carrot cake - it looked hard but it was soft and just a bit crisp on the edges. Love it.
- beef meat ball - it was ok
- fried glutinuous rice dumpling with minced meat filling - this was surprisingly my favorite. A bit sweetish but the shell was nicely done - perfect crisp outside and chewy soft inside (not too hard). The filling was a bit sparse though.
This is great if you like dim sum but just want 1 or 2 of each type. I will go back and try different items.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sep 4, 2017
I previously got to try some food from my coworker and this time I went to Chef Tony to see if it's really good. I got 6pc combo for $8.50 including rice and the price seemed expensive for what I got.
I got 2 pcs of shrimp dumpling (Hargow), spring rolls, Siumai, fried rice and got a free sesame ball. Like other yelpers mentioned dumpling skin broke easily. The size was small for dumplings and the rest were dry. Fried rice was left in the buffet tray for too long. The rice wasn't moist, but dry. Everything was just lukewarm and dry except for sesame ball.
Fried rice and Siumai didn't taste any different and they just tasted like black truffle oil. Sesame ball was greasy, but it was fresh and tasty. Sorry, nothing special here. Dimsum from Price Smart tasted a lot better.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 7, 2019
Dim sum in a food court? It was definitely better than I expected, but overall it wasn't amazing. Decent and I'd go back if I was craving dim sum without the wait. I haven't tried the actual restaurant yet though.

Craved for dimsum while at Metropolis so I decided to try this place. Had the Combo A which is 6 dimsum with noodles. Dimsum are smaller in size but tastes good. Noodles is very good if you add a bit of Soy Sauce. Worth to try.

I grew up in Hong Kong and have had so many dim sum restaurants but this is the first that I've seen that lets you pick one of each item. I've never thought Chef Tony (this shop or their Richmond restaurant) served excellent dim sum, but I appreciated this system where you can try a variety of offerings without going out with a large group. 2 stars for food, but fun experience and good value makes it a 4.

I showed up at Chef Tony's pretty late as they were just starting to shut down for the night. Most of the other outlets at the food court were already closed but yet staff was very welcoming and happily made sure I got some dinner. They helped me get my order in for what I wanted and made sure they snuck in a few replacements in case they were running short given it was last call. I will remember the kind staff for how they made me feel even though I pretty much came in the last minute - it meant a huge deal since I was hungry and out of options at the food court. Most Asian dining places can be very rude during these hours, from what I have experienced in other places and cities. Food was very good too. I got the sticky rice in lotus leaf and the pork dumplings with mushroom. You know it is good dim sum when the food is light and the weight of the dumpling dough does not weigh you down. Will be happy to be back again and explore the remaining menu.
