So finally it to Brock House after having
Lived in Vancouver since 1974. Yes it took us this long to try this place. Love the
View and the history, but the food was just ok. The appetizers are pricey and very, very small. Our fish cakes were about the size of small scallops and were around $14 . There were 4 of them and small salad . The crab stuffed mushrooms were under cooked and only
5 for $12. Duck with berry glacé and seasonal veggies and Mash potatoes was good . My prawn and scallop linguini in light creamy garlic butter sauce was ok . I could have easily made that at home. Nothing memorable. Chocolate mouse was good, tiramisu was not and cheesecake was ok. Overall, expensive and food was ok. Small portions so if you are hungry , be warned. Would I
Go again? Probably not as there are better restaurants in Vancouver. But the water view was great!

      First to Review

I visited the Brock House last winter with my (now) wife when we were looking for a place to have our wedding. We had dinner so that we could test drive the kitchen. The food, it was good, but didn't "wow" us. I think people choose the Brock House for events because of the venue and the packages, not the memorable food.

I really liked that they had a package that even included one hour of open bar and wine with dinner, a champagne toast and wedding cake. Another bonus is that there is a very nice place for a sit down, outdoor ceremony. I didn't know it at the time, but this is a hard thing to find in Vancouver! But I think to really appreciate the Brock House in all of it's splendor, you'd need a bigger guest list/budget. The outdoor tent, etc. was more for a party of 200. They do have facilities for a smaller group, but it's upstairs, and frankly, just not as hot.

If you are a Vancouver bride or groom and are looking for a great wedding venue, check out the Brock House. But do it fast, because everyone else is also circling the place like hungry wolves.

Okay, where do I start? Let me preface this by saying my wife and I have many years of FB industry experience and are always willing to give the benefit of the doubt but, this was bad, almost comedic at times.
Our friends purchased a Groupon for brunch at the Brock House.
Entering the front entrance you are greeted by a variety of directions to go with no clear signage to point you in the right direction. Once we found the dining room and were seated our waiter showed up at the table to take drink orders and give us our menus. The menu was prefixed with 3 choices of mains. We were not informed that one of the mains was not available until the waiter came back to take the order. Hard to imagine why when you only have 3 choices they wouldn't all be available as we were the first table to be seated. It's not like they had time to run out of product. My wife and I ordered orange juice, which came in a beer sleeve packed with ice. Not exactly the way you serve orange juice with breakfast. At one point I noticed my glass was very dirty. It still had scum from a previous drink ringing the inside. Pretty gross!
The croissant was edible, the yogurt parfait with blueberries and granola was quite enjoyable.
The food was served. Our companions Eggs Benedict looked good and by their account tasted wonderful. Our meals were different. The poached eggs I ordered were medium hard to hard. My wife's over easy eggs were hard, slightly charred and rubbery. These two dishes went back to the kitchen. Not sure how they even passed the expediting stage. The cooks should be ashamed for cooking it and the server should be ashamed for serving it. After waiting for replacement meals while watching our friends finish their plates, the second coming of the food was much more palatable.
Now about the service. The staff was very polite and said sorry quite often as the dining room ended up being seated all at once, which caused plenty awful timing issues and the wrong meals being delivered to the wrong table, so on and so on....
The wait for coffee refills was excruciating and when they did come only three of us received a refill, the forth member of our group staring on in bewilderment as the waiter turned and walked away forgetting to fill his cup. Our requests for condiments and water were never fulfilled. We finally gave up asking for anything else.
We decided to ask for our cheque and bypassed the final course of sorbet. The orange juice in the scummy glass had not been removed from the bill so we deducted it from our payment.
At no time did any management show up to assist the wait staff and get things on course or talk to customers to lay in some necessary PR work. I believe this place needs a reworking from the top down. The blame lies on management as the staff has not been properly trained and the room not laid to allow them to do there jobs.
After receiving our cheque and one more round of sorries from the waiter we make our way out the door, never to return.

P.S. The idea of a Groupon is to get people in the seats, give them a good show and hopefully get some return customers. The Brock House is just giving away free food at this point because no one will return.

Used to be decent 30 years ago..washrooms were dirty..Asked our waiter to avoid onions on my 6 course tasting meal. My bruschetta and pasta had plenty of both.I asked him what happened to the heads up on the onions..he apologised and said kitchen missed it..then brought me some French fries that could have been Mcain shoestring fries..not homemade..Steak was rubbery and about 4 ounces lol..that's about 2 more ounces that the Chocolate mouse for dessert. Danny Wong has let his mediocre standards drop so low we will never be back..too bad..nice location..horrid food.

I am very sad to write this review for the Brock House. Having grown up in Vancouver, the Brock House is remembered well as a Grande Dame of sophistication. The setting is beautiful no doubt about it. When you walk into the house, the vintage woodworking and heritage feel to this home is reminiscence of a simpler time without technology. Our reservation was at 8:00 which was perfect to catch the sunset and it was a beautiful evening so we walked through the home into the garden where they had seating on the patio with a gorgeous canopy. Unfortunately when you walk through home, the carpets are extremely worn and detract from the immaculate look of the rest of the home.

We were here for a 6 course tasting from Groupon.

Course #1 - Scallops on a whole wheat baguette. The scallops were cooked perfectly but as in a previous review - the baguette was random and it would've been better on anything else like a polenta cake. The greens on the side were not dressed which was strange since the scallop has no sauce either

Course #2 - Crab cake: very tasty and the side greens were delicious

Course #3 - Mushroom soup: not too think and very nice taste

Course #4 - Steak and poutine: It was good and cooked well but in a previous review, the fries cheapen the dish and the poutine portion just feels like it should be something that I get in a bar.

Course #5 - Butternut squash ravioli: It was good but not much taste - just there

Course #6 - Chocolate Mousse: It was a nice finish but nothing that was extremely memorable.

The food was adequate and what I would expect out of the Brock House. what surprises me is the service. When we sat down, the server didn't ask us if we wanted a cocktail just basically asked us if we were there for the Groupon and gave us 2 wine choices, a merlot and The Yellowtail Chardonnay. I asked for Pinot Grigio and he said that he only had a bottle and tried to dissuade us from ordering a bottle - like he didn't want to get us a wine list. I know vendors don't make a lot of money from Groupon so wouldn't you want to make your profit on alcohol? I also wanted a cocktail but he basically went straight into the service since the menu was already determined.

There was 5 other tables than us and all of them had Groupons so I'm not sure if they were busy earlier but this was looking pretty sad for the Brock House on a Friday night. But I will have to say this - it was a gorgeous view, we caught the sunset and had a decent meal for a decent price. I hope the Brock House sustains itself on weddings because if it was based on just the service I received tonight, I would be saddened to think that the Brock House might not last in the competitive restaurant industry. At some point, like all aging women, we can't depend on just our looks alone.

Do not go here. A long time ago, in another lifetime, you could have a wonderful meal with people who knew how to serve.

      Dismal at best.

They represented on a Groupon deal a $140 valu 6 course tasting meal that was a joke. It was as if they had a leftover wedding course that they served you. I can't even be bothered to get into it all. I am sorry I cannot charge them with fraud and misrepresentation of being a decent restaurant with decent food.

If you don't care about sitting on a chair with table for food and want a nice setting, get some take out and sit at the beach and watch the sunset in front of the restaurant...or go to the Boathouse for lessor bad and cheaper with servers who have a clue. They need to close the doors or let someone else take over the kitchen and stop lying about the value of their offering.

Brockhouse, really, you cannot accommodate us for the second time after cancelling our reservation last May (that we had booked a month prior), for our First Wedding Anniversary. Really disappointing. Why would you offer a Social Shopper Deal when you keep cancelling our reservation? This is unacceptable, by telling my husband you are fully booked till September and it is best to just get a refund. Now we have to request a refund from Social Shopper- what a hassle! I AM NOT AMUSED! And will not promote your place to anyone - EVER!

      I went to a friend's wedding here.
Apparently, they have the tent set up and left up on the lawn throughout the summer months (and they take it down for the winter). The (usually wedding) guests are seated in the tent. No other groups are seated inside the building, either, so you end up with a nice seating area plus a dancing area inside the building. The view from the Jericho beach location must be spectacular.
For this October wedding, the 7pm start meant we were too late for the view and sunset. Clear plastic sheets covered the sides, so we could see through it enough to see there were lights on the opposing shore, but not pretty enough to look at. It was too warm when the heaters were on, but it cooled off very quickly when they were turned off. I'm glad I kept my coat with me instead of having it hung up.
The ceiling of the tent has small ("Christmas") lights built into it for a sweet effect, and also has four chandeliers. They are dimmable.

The cordless mic was iffy... It was OK most of the time, but would cut out for one second maybe twice every minute. A bit annoying. No "eee!" feedback sound, though.

Mushroom Soup was the highlight of the food. It was an almost fluffy kind of non-heavy creamy, and well seasoned. The chicken breast was also well-seasoned and moist. The skin was not crispy, but enough to be not slippery gross. I liked the broccoli and carrots, too, also well seasoned. I liked that all of them did not feel "overly seasoned" as in overwhelming the food. But if someone is watching their salt intake, they may feel concerned.
Dessert was about four small cream puffs (profiteroles?) arranged in a parfait kind of glass, which was cute, but there was a bit too much whipping cream in the whole arrangement. The cream inside the puffs themselves were good.

The waiters were in bow-ties and vests. The flatware was solid.

I was in the "other friends" table, and though it was a big round one, the 10 settings were very cramped. It worked out, though, since 3 people didn't show up (and we also got to use their drink tickets).

I had been hearing from the bride about how hard it was to get in touch with the coordinator (on more than one occasion), which caused her unnecessary stress. That would make me wary to organize something at this venue (besides the fact that it's probably above my budget range), but it was a nice place to go to as a carefree guest.
