Was in the area and starving this weekend, tried to go to the Patisserie Rhubarbe sugar shack but they ran out of sandwiches and we were too hungry to wait in line for just sweets, and there was a line at Byblos too, and just when things looked hangry and grim: Yelp to the rescue. We found it on the app, and popped around the corner into this unmarked, tiny, bright little room. We were served hot almond milk chai as soon as we sat down, and then we devoured incredibly tart and delicious rhubarb French toast, salmon gravlax, goat cheese and wild mushroom omelettes, yogurt with homemade granola, all so good and healthy and chill and friendly. A great find, not fancy, no room for crowds, just a few round wooden tables and a calm smiling vibe.

IMPORTANT BABY LAMB RELATED UPDATE: "The borough of Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie has approved a plan to bring about fifteen lambs and sheep to Pelican Park this July. Their task? Eat grass.
The pilot project comes following a proposal last year from Mathyas Lefebure, who was a shepherd in France for a decade before moving to Montreal.
He says grazing sheep is an environmentally-friendly way to maintain and fertilize green spaces. He also wants to use sheep to educate city dwellers about farming."

Cat's outta the bag and there are often lines here now so I will add more voice to the pile: Chez Tousignant is so oh so good. I had the Tousignant hot dog, fries and a Maple Syrup cola. The idea of a homemade hotdog is delightful and glorious. I don't eat a lot of meat and hot dogs in particular are conflicting for me because I have always loved them since I was a kid getting them at street carts in Toronto or on the pier in LA or at the Jersey Shore, and I've tried to not think about what goes in them. The dogs at Tousignant taste like good memories without the preservatives-and-weird-parts panic. They are delicious and the topping are heaps of tastey and the bun is fresh and flavourful and good. The fries could have a been a little crispier maybe but they taste great.
The young black guy working the front counter deserves 5 stars all on his own, super welcoming, super quick in both languages, efficient at working the line and getting people their food as it came out, even noticing that folks were slipping on the step on the way in and running out to salt the icy stair, wash his hands and not miss a beat with a grin for the next customer. Great staff and great vibes in general at this super sweet gourmet casse croute. -
This truly was one of the best dining experiences of my little life so far. The turtle soup is as good as everyone says, the pecan encrusted fish was dreamy, and the souffle was puffy and chewysweetspicy and I could eat it every day. The champagne and wine recommendations were crazy good.
Most outstanding and noticeable of all is the quality of service at Commander's Palace. Nothing compares. Everyone who wants to work in service should train here. Every single person we walked by who works here in any capacity gave us an incredibly warm welcome like we were dear old friends and beloved regulars. Every person at our table of 10 received personalized recommendations and considerate, focused, attentive care. The way each course is served, with synchronized, balletic precision, is breathtaking but then the moment your plate is placed in front of you, your waiter checks in with you to make sure you have what you need in this distinctly Southern, friendly, unpretentious way that makes the choreographed moment so much sweeter.
The design of the original dining room took my breath away, and the garden room was lovely too. I'd love to eat at the table in the wine bunker someday, but since the president sat in the garden room I can't imagine who this even-more-exclusive room is reserved for... Beyoncé probably. I can dream. -
I ordered in delivery from here yesterday. I found the staff on the phone and the delivery person super friendly and helpful, but I found the pizza underwhelming.
The crust was ok, better than the cardboard of a Pizza Pizza say, nice crunch on the bottom, but the flavours of the toppings were pretty flat. We had one meat lovers (which seemed to be basically just low quality pepperoni, maybe some other meat in there but nothing noticeable) and one vegetarian palak paneer pizza with spinach, cottage cheese, and onions. We were excited about that one but again, pretty tasteless. Even the cheese was kind of tasteless, like you know the taste of inexpensive low fat cheese? Like that.
Maybe we just had it on a bad day or ordered the wrong thing, other folks I know who have good taste really like this place, but last night anyway we kind of wished we'd ordered from somewhere else. -
Rolled up here late, after 3am for sure, after hours of karaoke and amazing dinner and heady talks. We sat at the bar and I don't remember how I described what I felt like drinking, but I remember the bartender calmly and happily jumping right to the challenge, inventing something I've never had before that hit all my favourite notes - bitter, sour, fresh, delicious. Chill divey beautiful crumbling French Quarter bar with perfect cocktail wisdom, none of the touristy vibes, all the love and and an open smile, quintessentially New Orleans.

I got my shoes back and they are amazing! I'm SO happy! They were repaired by hand and the work is impeccable, the heels were totally worn down in the crazy pattern of my uniquely messed up gait and they were so carefully rebuilt and resoled they look better than new, but fit like the absolute old favourites that they are. If you have new quality leather shoes that you want brought back to life by a master this is where to go.

Whoa this is my 950th review. Kinda bonkers. I'm very happy to be reflecting back on a beautiful week in beautiful New Orleans by writing this review for the lovely experience I had on the Steamboat Natchez.
This is the last real working Steamboat on the Mississippi, and it provides a leisurely break from the hum of the city. The narrator provides some amazing history, and the view along the levees gives a fascinating perspective on how the city has survived. It's lovely to sit and enjoy the breeze on the river from the different balconies, listen to the live New Orleans jazz band and enjoy the affordable and tasty cocktails from the different bars. The staff were all super warm and charming and helpful and clearly care a lot about this living piece of history.
Highly recommended as part of time spent in New Orleans, take a few hours and have a peaceful adventure.3/29/2016 -
Traditionally working class, characterized by pretty duplexes and triplexes that are slightly less prettified than the Plateau just to the south, with more artists per capita than anywhere else in North America. The area is changing and gentrifying and still has heart and laughs and inexpensive small delicious meals and pretty shops and pop up lofts where people are still making the country's best new music.
East of St Laurent there are huge buildings the size of city blocks that are the oddest mix of crumbling and new tech. They are zoned industrial and therefore the rightful home of the garment factories and wood shops that are in there, but they have also become the new tech hub in the city. Huge affordable space for rent with great views have drawn the next generation of startups that want to be able to work near where they actually live. Ubisoft is here too, pouring crowds of well paid adorably awkward nerds out into the tiny streets and restaurants nearby which is weird vibes for those who have always lived and worked here and great news for lunch purveyors.
Mostly though what I love is to wander through these streets, especially in the fall, especially during Pop Montreal. Leafy and full of friends on bikes and full of music and art and still with a friendly mix of generations and cultures, this is Mile End at it's finest, the Mile End that will always own my heart and call me home. -
Yay for adventures with Bartek! We drove out to Tetrauville because last time he tried this restaurant they had been out of the whole, half and quarter chicken. Following a glowing review by Eve Dumas in La Presse this tiny odd delicious spot experienced a wave of excited customers. They are still feeling the effects but the lines are gone and the staff are hitting their stride and it's a perfect time to head out on a Chicken Adventure.
We were able to sit right away and enjoy the collection of vintage beer bottles and jars of pickled peppers on the walls. We started with a delicious Paloma cocktail and ordered a quarter chicken which came perfectly moist and spicy with Pakistani seasoning and fries and coleslaw - all homemade and perfect; a giant and crazy interesting Poutine au Coq with beautiful tender chicken, gravy with butter chicken spices, and chimichurri on top. We also shared an excellent Ceasar salad with whole pieces of freshly cooked bacon, and an order of the special Hakka chicken wings which are officially my favourite chicken wings. Everything was cooked to order, made with great quality ingredients and exciting flavours. The co-owners come from vast restaurant experience including Liverpool House and APDC so you can taste all this high level food nerd pedigree but the room and the vibe is completely unpretentious, friendly, funny, part of the neighbourhood. I wish them all the love and success and can't wait to go back.
