Stopped here for lunch while doing a day on the north shore. Shrimp burrito was great, only complaint is we had to wait a while and the parking is a mess but overall good spot to check out while in Haleiwa

I'm from Mexico and have lived in Texas all my life and judging from what my partner thought was Mexican food (born and raised here) I didn't have high hopes for Mexican food in HI (maybe it's just him lol). Needless to say I did try somewhere else previously and was so disappointed, I was scared to try this place out. However, I was pleasantly surprised! I got the fish/shrimp tacos and an agua de jamaica and both were so so good. It's actually really easy to mess up Jamaica as many places do, but this one had a perfect balance of sweetness and a little sour. Tacos were more filling than I expected, too.
*I do wish the salsas were spicy but that is just a personal preference*
We came during peak hours so be prepared to wait, I think it took about 20-30 min to receive our food, but duh we went during peak time. Also, a bird pooped on my head so watch out for those. I'll be back in Nov to try other items on the menu! (Pic is from Oct 22)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi KR so happy to hear that you enjoyed our handmade tacos. we press each tortilla by hand and our agua Fresca is made with dried hibiscus flowers. we prefer it a little sour so its refreshing. We do have habanero and salsa brava for customers that prefer some heat. Let us know next visit and we will have that for you. Thank you so much and please come again soon. Gracias!

I am a taco fanatic. I love tacos.
I've lived in Hawaii for 15+ years and i never order tacos because they're usually overpriced / skimpy on fillings / tiny / not good / all of the above. Or you can only get them as a plate with beans and rice and i don't want beans and rice. I want tacos. So I either make them at home or load up on them whenever I visit CA.
I've seen this place before i but there was always a line or a long wait so I've never been. This time the line was minimal so I ordered 4 tacos: 2 crispy, 2 soft. Shredded beef, carne asada, chicken, and Al pastor.
I will go as far as to say, these are the best tacos being served in Hawaii. The tortillas are fresh tasting and great. The different meats are all flavorful and tasty. The salsa's are delicious. I really enjoyed the crispy tacos but the soft were also really good. At $5/pc they were a good value considering the size, quality, and taste.
The California burrito caught my eye, but from pictures it's not really true to form as a real SD Cali burrito. The other menu items looked good too, but the tacos really shined for me
It's a little bit of a hike to get up here from town, and it took maybe 25 mins to get my order, but If I'm looking to buy tacos in the future this might be the only place I'll go to.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Aloha Joj, So happy to know that you enjoyed our Tacos. We use fresh corn masa and press the tortillas by hand. Our meat is grass-fed, fish is local caught, and some of the veggies are organic and local farm grown. We think using top ingredients makes all the difference. We hope to be serving you again soon. Thank you again! Aloha!

I ordered the guacamole with chips. It was super fresh and refreshing.
For my main course I had the shredded beef and Al pastor tacos. I much preferred the shredded beef. The soft taco shells were super yummy too.
The refried beans were soooooo good. The rice was relatively average.
This is a great place to grab something and chill for a bit. They have a nice area in the back for seating.
The service was fast and friendly.
They have a parking lot right out front and they only charge $2.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

My favorite mexican food on the island hands down. I've only recently discovered surf n salsa within the past few years. Now, every time I'm in Haleiwa, I will make it a point to go to surf n salsa (unless its a sunday since they are closed then).
This is a food truck located in a lot nearby Giovannis but in a separate food truck lot. Even if you have easy access to great Mexican food wherever you are, I would still highly recommend stopping by. There is a big parking lot with ample parking and lines don't get too crazy like some of the other spots in Haleiwa. Sometimes they have a parking attendant, and other times they don't. You can park nearby if they are charging for parking or just pay the fee - I believe it is $2. Secretly hoping that no one finds out how good surf n salsa is so it stays the way it is!
Choose from their menu of tacos, burritos, salads, etc. I can't speak about everything on the menu but I always order their soft tacos because they are SO good. I wish they had a town location because I would be there all the time. My favorite is their al pastor. The tacos are huge - two is filling, three if you're feeling extra hungry. They are bigger then an average street taco, maybe a 4" taco shell or so. The tortillas are handmade corn tortillas that are so delicious. I dream about these tacos!
After ordering in the front, you wait in the back courtyard area for your food. There are a ton of tables and seating areas - cutely decorated with umbrellas and lots of greenery. You can enjoy your food there or take it to the beach! They also have a sink to use which is so nice to wash your hands before and after eating. A must go to place in Haleiwa!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jazmin G.Chicago, United States7169Oct 26, 2023
Quite possibly some of the best Mexican inspired food in Hawaii. I'm from San Diego and it reminded me so much of the food there- perhaps seasonings they use. We ordered one fish taco (soft shell) and one shrimp taco (hard shell), California burrito (asada) chips and salsa and the cucumber lemonade. Savory and finger licking good! Service was good and kind. Overall ambiance is a vibe, good 2000s music and very clean. All to say, just come and eat - adding to the 1100+ reviews ;) ate all the food so no pic

The wide range of food was awesome, made my decision hard! I ended up with a steak quesadilla and a steak taco, also an order of chips n salsa. The green salsa was SO good, not too spicy, but not too mild either. It was raining on the north shore when we were there so we opted to eat in our car, but the seating area was cute and had lots of shade. The staff were nice and helpful..there were a couple of people before my order so it took a while to get my food. It was worth the wait tho!!

I had the 2 taco plate- one with carne cuisada and one with fajita meat. The homemade corn tortillas were some of the best I have ever eaten. The chips and salsa were excellent as well. I ate it so fast I didn't take a picture!
