The Vietnamese have a saying: “Rice is a spouse, but pho is a lover,” and the scores of pho-natics in Toronto couldn’t agree more! To celebrate this tender love affair, we sluiced our way across town this week to supply you with the in-pho on the city’s most pho-nomenal noodleries!
Top of mind for most fans of the belly-warming broth is the strip along “Noodle Alley” in Chinatown. Angela L points to Pho Pasteur’s slurpy soup, whose broth “was flavourful before and after my hoisin and hot sauce massacre. And thanks to the AC, we didn't break into the usual beads of noodle sweats!” Connie T loves the magical pho at Pho Ai My, which boasts noodles that are “thick and not soggy" with "tender beef brisket and intensely flavourful soup stock.” And it's Andrew G who exposes the secret of Pho Hung’s price-to-size ratio: “Their pho is super-sized! Small is large, medium is XL, and XL is probably a gallon of pho!” Bottom's up!
Many a noodle enthusiast has been lured into Rua Vuang Golden Turtle, thanks to glowing endorsements by local celebrity chef Susur Lee and our own Victor L: "By far, this is the best pho I've ever had! The broth at Golden Turtle is different. It's tasty and yet it's very clear – to me, that's a sign of a good broth!" Melissa J heads straight to the “other” pho place on Ossington, Pho Tien Thanh: "The pho broth is divine, full of all the right kinds of spices and flavour, and they include way more of everything on the pho topping plate!" Pho realz?
Eune Y dares to choose the veggie pho at Hanoi 3 Seasons over the standard offering. “It's got a light lemongrass flavour accented by tangy bits of tomato that's incorporated into a broth – full of depth and wonderfully refreshing.” On the meatier side of the coin, pho phenom Neil T claims it’s “worth the drive to the 'Bro' to sample the art of fresh noodlery at Vietnam Noodle Star: “The pho is custom ordered – I like the raw beef, brisket, and tendon combo. It literally melts in your mouth!” Deanna W’s epic quest to find the most slurp-worthy broth bomb landed her at Pho Linh, where they use fresh rice noodles, sawtooth herb and basil. “At least this is a pho worth enduring the slow service of the 506 College streetcar for!” Sounds pho-king great to us.
