No Frills

This store is hugely welcome with only the over-priced IGA in the immediate neighborhood. All the basics are cheap, cheap, cheap and the store re-introduced me to that intense yellow packaging of No Name brand products.

The only downside is that I've learned the nori and coconut milk are "frills". Really? Really.

We dropped in here for a rainy day brunch. The big mocha practically called my name, so we ordered it without hesitation. Unfortunately, save the whip cream, I've made better coffees/mochas when camping.

The interior is dingy.  The combo of wood paneling, limited light, and commemorative steins really give off that basement feel. Not so into that. Also not too keen on the carpet.

Brunch was decent. We left with full bellies and a reasonable cheque.

I have to say the star of the whole experience was our server. She played the perfect balance of attentive, relaxed, and genuine.

Kea Foods

Disclaimer: I get a little weak in the knees over bulk food. And Kea Foods has one of the best selections I've encounter recently in Vancouver.

It's a bit of a surprise considering the dingy exterior and shabby-looking produce. But inside, the non-fresh foods are really outstanding.

I found some make-at-home marmalade here. Sure, I only need 4lbs. of sugar. But at 70 cents the can seemed like a steal. Then I discovered the multitude of bulk bins with scoops. I counted about five varieties of brown rice just for starters.

Last on my list of fabulous Kea finds was miso paste. I'd been hunting for it (admittedly not for long), but of the last five stores I'd visited Kea was the only one to deliver.

Don't underestimate this burly little market. It's got some weight behind its punch.

Reno's Restaurant

Reno's combines cafeteria eating with underwhelming retro style. The breakfast special is a great deal at $3.75, and it's less of a trek than Bon's.

I tend to appreciate the diversity of clientele at Reno's -- everyone from Main-streeters eschewing the likes of Slickety Jim's to old men slouched over their sunnyside-up eggs. The service consists of you walking up to the end of the counter to collect your tray. There are only ever two people working, so keeping to the system is important.

I like Reno's for the diner feel, but the cafeteria element gives it a slight hospital feel. That with the low levels of light make Reno's only an okay spot to grab a greasy breakfast. But for convenience (right at a B-line stop) and relaxed feel (no one will hurry you out of your booth), Reno's is a solidly three-star joint.

Gallery Jones

A gorgeous space with quirky interesting art -- an experience here will far exceed a trip to the Vancouver's main mammoth of an art gallery.

The space works perfectly for special events. For one visit, we saw a short screened here and for another, the event was organized in conjunction with the neighboring Bjornson Kajiwara Gallery.

In chatting with the one of the staff members/owners briefly, many of my perceptions (based on experiences in other *cough* South Granville galleries) came crashing down. The gentleman we spoke with was enthused about art but also didn't talk on a higher level than everyone else in the room.

Overall a great spot to visit. And with a gallery next door and also the Truck gallery just a few more doors west, visitors can take a little 3th Avenue art stroll. My, doesn't that sound civilized?

Hot Cuisine Fine Catering

This is an adorable little catering company run by a husband and wife team. Decor is basic with wooden tables and a warm yellow glow. The husband/chef works in a clean kitchen in back, while the wife/front-of-house person darts back and forth behind a high counter.

Each day there is a slightly different offering as well as some basics. Fare ranges from West Coast to East Indian. Every day there is a hearty soup on offer. All options can be eaten in the tiny dining area or taken home.

It perfectly appeals to the local clientele with foil containers of heat-at-home dinners.

Also, the actual sign outside the store reads "Haute Cuisine" (with a circumflex -- aka a 'roof thingy' for all you French students -- floating over one of the vowels). I get a daily kick out of the pun.

SPCA Thrift Clothing Store

Considering how much I've raved about the next-door-but-one SPCA furniture store, this clothing store ranks at the opposite end of the scale. There's a cramped, moldy feeling to the store and the items tend to represent a low quality.

I will concede that the store size limits what can be displayed. The layout links a number of formerly residential rooms into a confusion of cloth.

The staff members here are friendly and chatty. I've found that the prices often do not equate to the quality of the garment. Only if I'm in the most last minute of a hurry, say finding a Halloween costume on Oct. 31st, will I consider entering this place. Your dollars are better spent support the SPCA at the nearby furniture store.

The Transilvania Peasant Bakery

There are so many things to love about Transilvania bread.

The storefront appears as a bit Disney-esque in its eerie feelings. And when you walk inside the perfection of the place does not disappoint. Behind the counter are often only a few loaves of bread standing against the back wall. There are 2lb. and 4lb. loaves of the peasant bread: Those are pretty much your options.

The friendly baker will greet you and if you have any questions be sure to ask away. Further back in the store there is a brick bread oven where all the daily fresh bread is baked.

Anytime I buy a small loaf from here it lasts a full week. It's the kind of bread a shepherd would want to take if he's moving sheep from the summer to winter pasture. The rib-sticking, tummy-filling kind of bread most of us have never eaten.

There are so many things to love about Transylvania bread. (And sorry on not putting a street #, I can't find the bakery in the phone book!).

The friendly baker will greet you and if you have any questions be sure to ask away. Further back in the store there is an archaic-looking brick bread oven where all the daily fresh bread is baked. It appears to have survived from the age of the Romans.

Uprising Breads Bakery

The closest supermarket to my home orders baked breads from Uprising Bakery. I've tried most of the grainy goods, but my favorite remains the hedgehog rolls.

I've got many memories of car trips through the U.K. where bread roll sandwiches were the main picnic item. And when you combine a very British word like "hedgehog" with the form of a roll, I get unstoppable nostalgia.

What is a hedgehog roll? It's a whole-wheat roll coated in all kinds of seeds and grains: flax, sunflower, oats, barley, wheat, rye, millet, and buckwheat. It has the same dapple-ish outside that a hedgehog has when it's scared and rolled up into a ball.

My only star-diminishing point is I'm pretty sure the bread bags are not recyclable. And when Dempster's is sitting right next to Uprising in a recyclable bag, I suddenly have to weigh my options.
