Fisherman's Market

Category: Seafood Markets

The Halifax Fishermans Market feels like a throwback to the days when Halifax was still a young port town and fresh fish was sold on the waterfront daily.

Why bother going to your local grocery chain and picking up seafood that is freezer burnt or overpriced and preserved with chemicals. I've never had anything taste as fresh as the Haddock filets that my mom buys here, you can taste and feel the differences in texture that will make you are permanent fresh fish snob, (fair warning!)

Usually marked down from market prices, this fish market offers some great food for even better savings.

Rebecca Cohn Auditorium

There is always a little bit of nostalgia towards the venue in which you witnessed your first real life concert.

The Rebecca Cohn Auditorium was host to the pop band "The Moffatts" when I was in grade 5, and I can still remember hanging over the balcony from row double G swaying along to the bubblegum lyrics of the 90's.

Memories and Nostalgia aside, the Dalhousie Art's Centre's Rebecca Cohn auditorium is one of the best mid sized venues in the city. There are great acoustics and seating is tiered, orchestra style with balconies and great sight lines from most seats in the house.

Keep an eye on their website for upcoming theatre and musical shows and of course performances by Symphony Nova Scotia on their home stage.

Gio Restaurant

I wish I had the chance to eat at this Market Street dining room more often. After an especially delicious meal of BBQ pulled pork, cornbread, guac and sweet potato fries I found myself comparing other restaurants meals to their standard.

Prices fit my mark for a special night out but are a little too pricey for a casual dinner. Gio offers a yum yum and z's package that at around $300 will get you a 3 course meal and room at the Prince George Hotel. Sounds like an anniversary package to me!

Although few and far between, my visits to Gio have always left me satisfied. Yes, this restaurant does exude a certain flare for the flashy, even the food is arranged perfectly on the plates when served. It can make for a bit of a stiff atmosphere, but you can rest assured that your meal is top notch.

Crumbs Gluten Free Bakery

I've written in a few reviews about my dad and his weird food allergies (and how he is allergic to just about everything imaginable). Well that long list of allergies includes yeast and gluten, which is what brought me to Crumbs Gluten Free Bakery at the  Halifax Farmers Market.

My dad goes crazy over the Crumb's bagels, and I was apprehensive about trying them at first. I thought I was perfectly happy with the bagels I was eating but boy was I wrong! The bagels which substitute gluten for a combination of tapioca, rice and flax taste sweeter than  wheat products and come covered in seeds (of the poppy and sesame varieties).

While the bagels might be a budget killer for some people, and cost more than regular bagels (2 for $4, 4 for $7), for the crowd that can't have gluten they are the best of the best.

Ecko Unltd in Dartmouth Crossing is a spacious urban clothing store that specializes in keeping prices low and quality high. I'm not a usual patron of the Ecko brand, but I've found their accessories for great prices on sale and had to spread the word to my friends about it.

Aviators that have lasted me two summers were purchased at Ecko for ten bucks. If you're looking for a pair of shades then check out the latest trends at this store, they always have lots of stock and selection great for browsing.

Pseudio

I will admit, and I'm sure most of my fellow yelpers agree that the jean selection at Pseudio is the most redeeming feature of this store. I have long legs and find most stores tend to fall short in their denim sizes. I've come to rely on Pseudio's sale jean rack for most of the bottoms I add to my wardrobe.

My love for this store ends at jeans, and I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the rest of Pseudio's inventory. I'm not really impressed by the large selection of Bench jackets and hoodies that take up almost a third of the stores floorspace. The sales section in the back is usually a great place to find a few cool shirts but I haven't had much luck with the New Arrival clothing- too expensive.

Farmer Clem's

Farmer Clem's is a great place to pick up any essentials before getting your garden back in shape this summer. There are shrubs, trees, potted flowers, flower arrangements, hanging baskets and anything you'd ever need to make your garden bloom.

It's kind of a tradition to buy my mother a gift card to Farmer Clem's for Mother's Day, and this year I picked up a cute little 5 head rose bush as well for only 15 dollars.

This Farmer Clem's offers mainly only your garden variety (no pun intended) plant and tree selections, but their prices will never disappoint.

Creperie Mobile

The Creperie Mobile is hands down one of my favorite features of the Halifax Farmers Market. There are very few things that can get me out of bed before noon on a Saturday, and these crepes are worth missing some sleep over.

It's consistently packed at the Creperie Mobile, week after week and even if I've already eaten breakfast I usually find myself gravitating towards this crowded pastry booth.

My favorite crepes are the sweet selections (the applesauce and cinnamon is always a classic) but if you are looking for more of a meal you can get eggs, cheese, ham and seasonings as well.

Envy

I've never been really satisfied by the selection of styles that Envy tends to carry. You wont find classic pencil skirts and timeless silhouettes here but often trendier pieces that sometimes linger too close to the fashion do/don't line for my taste.

Don't get me wrong, some of the clothing is cheap and relatively stylish, but more than once I've found the same brands at Winners stores for cheaper. Be wary about Envy, you could be paying more here than you would somewhere else.

Build A Bear Workshop

Category: Toy Stores

4.0 star rating
5/18/2010
I was visiting relatives in Toronto the summer that the Build A Bear craze took Canadian shoppers by storm. It seemed like every body and their grandmother had a personalized teddy and all the bells and whistles (sometimes literal bells and whistles) that accompanied these stuffed animals.

The idea is to make each "bear" (there are actually a variety of stuffable animal species) as personalized as possible by choosing the body, stuffing, voice box (optional), clothes and accessories. One of the most fascinating steps is when the bear's soon to be legal guardian chooses a little novelty heart and makes a wish on it before it gets sewn inside.

I decided to jump on the bandwagon a few Christmas' past and buy my little sister one of these plush creations. I opted for a pretty basic package, starting with the cheapest ($15 dollar) teddy "shell" and opted out of the voice box and add-on options. I did however spend about 20 minutes picking out the most exciting outfit I could for this little bear; which ended up being a tutu and ballet shoes that matched the bear itself in price!

Of course there are the ridiculous steps I had to take at the cash register to adopt the bear "legally" and name the bear and baptize the bear (I jest, but it wouldn't be surprising), but it was worth it to see my sisters face light up on Christmas.
