Dollar Giant

I swear this is the BEST dollar (or $1.25 store) around. I realize it's a little out of the way for those who don't live or work in N. Van - I work on the Shore- but it's really one of the best ones. The big selling point for me personally is the crafting/scrapbooking aisle. This stuff is GOOD QUALITY, and lots of it. I did check out one other Dollar Giant and it paled in comparison to the Cap Mall location, so I never tried any others....

I could go to the Fraser St store...but I'm afraid of disapointment. I can easily stop at Cap Mall on my way home from the Shore and be in dollar-twenty-five heaven. Sure it has some of the crap to be expected but there is a HUGEA range of craft items, tons of gift bags in all sizes and the Christmas goodies are overflowing!

Update - 11/28/2010
I got my baby back. Work is guaranteed for 3 months. I couldn't be happier people, really. You have no idea. Have you ever been told your computer is dead, and to just forget it? Nothing can bring it back? I was told this by another shop...and I did give up for several months. I'm sooooooo glad I went here and talked to them. I came in under budget, $200, and have my laptop in PERFECT WORKING ORDER.

Ok so I was at my wits end trying to deal with the people at the Dell Call centre. Yes, I bought a Dell and the logic board crapped out AS SOON AS THE WARRANTY ran out. I got nowhere with Dell, tried a computer guy in North Van who told me "nope, can't be fixed. Happens all the time with Dell". My Guy suggested I try someone else and we found this place on Google with a ton of really positive reviews. One of the reviews involved a Dell laptop...I felt hope for the 1st time in MONTHS. We walked in this past weekend, treated efficiently and respectfully...was told 'if we can't fix it, no charge...if we can we'll tell you the estimate and you can decide to proceed or not...' I figured, why not? Try right? They call me today and it CAN BE FIXED...will be ready in one week. They will be dealing with Dell on my behalf I assume and I'm so happy!! I'll update this review once my laptop is back in my arms :-) Oh and I get to go back to the dude in North Van who recovered my data and stored it as his shop to say "Look man, someone else fixed this! Thanks for nothin'"

So far so good, will update in 1 week...

I may be a little slow on the take here...'cause I just went here for 1st time last night. My Guy has been there numerous times before and told me it's hit and miss, the food is usually ok, the service is nothing to 'write home about" so I was somewhat prepared. My 1st thought upon sitting down at the table was 'wow it's dark in here'. I'm all about mood-lighting yadda yadda...but I need to be able to see the menu at least! I was holding it dangerously close to the flame given off by the teeny tea light on the table but was still struggling. My Guy commented, that if the joint was going to have ambient lighting, they should have music to suit; not the rap music that was playing. It's ok for the right time/space but for such a dark setting and candles, a blustery night outside, something a bit more mellow would have seemed a better choice. But what do I know?

I must admit I felt a tad out of place since I wasn't wearing a plaid shirt, wool toque OR skinny pants. Thankfully My Guy sports some facial hair so he fit in perfectly. Back to the food. We started off with the Yam dip that was to come with bread and chips for dipping. Right off the bat it was WAY TOO CHILLED. Yams are so delicate in taste, and I assumed it would be more like hummus, a bit warm or at least room temperature. Combine an ice cold dip with warm bread and you get a 'could be much better' product....it had potential though. My burger came, the peanut one and upon the 1st bite I was amazed with the complete and utter LACK of any 1 discernible flavour. NOTHING jumped out at me, nothing stuck with me, I remember nothing about this burger but going through the motions of chewing. I was very disapointed. I could vaguely sense the potential of the burger patty itself, and how it was made, saw some possibility but it needed to be dressed up with some taste. The 'restless side' of trail mix was completely out of place and I have no comment except a head shake...the spring green salad was the most flavourful component on the plate and thank god for the addition of quinoa for some texture ad variety!

My Guy had the Final Option, a veg curry that he was seriously enjoying. I tasted and yeah, I agree. Good choice. The red curry was smooth with a definite after taste on the tongue of coconut milk, not too spicy...his only complaint was it was so dark in there he couldn't really see WHAT was in the curry...

All in all, I'm glad I finally checked this place out and I would still like to check out the nachos I hear so much about. My Guy treated me to this dinner and I love him for it; I wanted to give it a HUGE THUMBS UP RAVING REVIEW but I just can't....it was ok...

That's all I gotta say about that. :-)

Nov 6- Just back from lunch/dinner here after a day of testing our relationship by going to Metrotown. We made it out of Metrotown alive but rather hungry so I suggested East is East for the tasting menu feast...Silk Road something or other. Oh my belly (and mind) is soooo warm and happy now it's ridiculous. The food was great, tasty, comforting, just-right spiced and enough of it to sink a ship. I am fully and completely satisfied, with a refill of chai to go as well. Happy!

A few weeks back: My Guy and I were out window shopping last weekend and stopped in to grab a roti roll to go. He'd been to East is East before and raved about it, personally I've never had a meal there...this take out was to be my first foray into their divine temptations. I wasn't disappointed. Well to be honest I was because I WANTED MORE. We split a Yogi's Treat roll; tender chickpeas in a smooth tomato cream massala...wow...the soup was amazing- but not quite hot enough. This was nowhere near enough for 2 people; it was just a quick snack for us but it made me want to come back- AND SOON. I'm a Vegetarian so finding places that are more than Veg-Friendly are a HUGE bonus.

Very disappointed there were NO kids clothes here. We had a big day planned to check it out, had the coupon sent in the mail in hand...ready to check out the cool kids stuff. Nothing. Needless to say the child with me was extremely upset...I couldn't stick around to check out the store once we got the bad news, but I'd probably just keep checking out the stuff at Superstore rather than make the trip downtown.

We stopped in here last weekend because we both wanted a coffee and I thought, "support local, not Starbucks." I will NEVER come back. We were the only ones to order at counter, and gave our drink orders...then about 10 people came in. There was one poor girl manning the till and taking the orders, the money....and a fellow, with his back to the line up, at the sink. I thought this odd, and wondered (aloud) who was making our drinks? The girl said she was...but seriously? She's taking 10 + drink orders and still the dude at the sink, not moving. I know he can see/hear the people in the cafe. At first I couldn't figure out why the girl didn't ask him for help, but then realized maybe it's her boss and he just doesn't 'help.'? This is how I justified it anyway. Finally My Guy spoke up louder than me, asking again, who is making the drinks as about 5 minutes had passed. We weren't in any way mad at the girl, but really wondering why the hell she was a) alone and b) this person wasn't helping! He finally turned around and began to make drinks. The speed he moved was pretty much as if he had no arms...he refused to make any form of eye contact and put down a drink on the counter. We had to inquire 3 times for the name of the drink and to our surprise, it wasn't even our drink! We came in first. About 10-12 minutes has passed now...I ate my cookie which was very tasty but totally not worth it as it would have been lovely to have it with a COFFEE...Finally our drinks came up, after several others came first...the sign on the window on the way out? Manager, Asst Manger, part and full time staff needed. Ya think?

I came here for the 1st time last week, on recommendation of My Guy. I was really impressed with selection of hard-to-find items and the prices were super-reasonable! One of our favorite organic salad dressing lines were more than $1.50 cheaper than Buy Low or Superstore! Great selection of NATURAL soda pops...

I thought the bulk stuff was in good shape; I never saw ANY moths like I did at the bulk store up the road near 15th...I'm just sayin'. I spotted a few fluttering in the bins at THAT store. Not at Kea. I didn't buy any produce because we really try to get all our fruit and veg at Kins because the quality is amazing...but for organic items, bulk and ethnic products, check out Kea.

I came here 2 weeks ago to celebrate a friends birthday and while the concept and decor is comforting...the menu if you're a Veg isn't all that great. I was hoping since they do change the menu seasonally, there might be more to offer...

We started with a fondue to share and that was great, as usual...arrived warm and gooey. I opted for the veg sandwich (again) and started with the Carrot-Ginger soup. I was tasty yes, but super heavy on the mint...

My peeve wasn't the food tho, it was the service. I was asked if I wanted another glass of wine with my dinner- I said sure. That wine never arrived till I was almost taking the last bite. I flagged our server, reminded him a few times and eventually just forgot about it...the same happened while waiting for our check.

My dinner partners enjoyed their food, no real complaints and for the most part, mine was ok too. Just OK. Nothing fabulous. I had a good dinner last April at the Lonsdale one however...thought their house Red was great value for a bottle...

Not sure if I'll give it another go...
