Parking is impossible here.

Deal with it if you liked poached eggs.   It's one of the only places in Toronto that I can get good poached eggs - and that they'll ask if I want them runny, regular or hard - and deliver on my request.

Bathrooms are clean for Toronto/Scarborough.  The clientele can be a bit hmmmm not smooth.

Rye toast and poached eggs - they make this a good choice for me for a breakfast spot.

A really great, old-school Greek bakery.  Worth the short drive north from the Danforth.  Parking can be tricky Saturday afternoons and Sundays after church, but always worth it.

The desserts are always reliably good, the breads are fine, love love love the little containers of baked custard, but the absolute star of the show for me - the sesame rings - like the outside of a perfect Montreal bagel without the innards.   $0.40 a piece (I'd pay more for sure) - hard to stop snacking on them.   Warmed up at home with sweet butter and some cherry or plum preserves on the side, they're better than any cake.

Recently opened/re-opened in the spot once held by Myth, and then the Legion Sports Bar.  High ceilings, big fireplace, pleasant menu with decent prices.

Overall, a mess on the management side of things.   We won't be going back unless we hear about some significant changes in how things are run.

Fabulous entertainment by performers representing Hannan's Bellydance Studio and musicians from Layali El-Sharq.  Props to Nada, Abigail, Joe and Oksana.

A couple of really great waitresses - a special shout out to Christina who did her best to take care of us.  Another set of wait staff wasn't observed to do any work during the 3+ hours we were there.

The food, once we got it, was mostly good.  45 minutes after ordering, the $6 dip platter was serviceable - the flat bread and hot feta dip were the best parts.  The hummus was almost unrecognizable from being overly smoothed, the tzatziki wasn't bad, taramasalata fine, the baba ghanoush was there. Small servings of each - not the sampler size we're used to from old-school Danforth standards like Asteria.   The grilled calamari was very good - and served with a different, much better tzatziki than was used in the dip platter.  The word on the crab cakes and fried calamari was that they were good.

An hour and a half later, entrees for 4 at our table of 6 arrived.  Another half hour later, the final entree and side arrived.  The piri piri chicken got good reviews, the bbq duck pizza was good (fig and walnut were great touches), and the margherita pizza was quite good.   The pizza crusts were very good - light and puffy-crispy.  The side of pommes frites was good when it finally arrived.  However, one of our companions wanted salt for the fries.  He ended up going to the bar - the bartender went to the kitchen, came back out, got a shot glass, went back into the kitchen and came back with a shot glass of salt.  The fries were cold by that time.

Two hours and forty-five minutes for basic appetizers, some pizza, chicken and fries.  Should have been forty-five minutes to an hour. Max.

The menu is good and simple.  The food is good.  The wait staff that is working is helpful, though over-worked.

The place was horribly disorganized, probably not even ready for a soft opening.  The manager strutted around, chatting up young women when he should have been making sure that there was better communication between the kitchen and wait staff.  He seemed more interested in getting the lighting right than in overall customer care.

Whoever was responsible for the videographer should reconsider things.  Not much point in having live entertainment when the videographer is blocking the view for some portion of the audience the entire time - and distracting for everyone the entire time.

We left Christina a significant tip, as we expect her to be looking for another gig shortly.

Trevor is doing lunch ($25 prix fixe)  now, and that is a great idea.  Went with a pal, we reserved seats at the bar (good idea, it's always busy).   Mac and asiago cheese for her, Steak frites for me.  Both were perfect.  The steak was nice and barely bloody,  the poutine with truffled goat cheese was right on.  Didn't need the steak sauce.  It looked like it was just there to balance the visual of the plate.

Soup of the day (dressed up tomato soup with parm) was excellent, loved the creme brulee with the perfect thin thin crispy crunch layer.

Service at the bar seemed smoother than some of what was happening on the floor.

The food is really basic made fancy, in an unaffected way.   We'll be back for lunch.

Still a 2.5 to 3 star (stars?) place.  I've been having the Tom Kha veggie soup regularly - the soups really are the best thing about the place.

Had a respectable Cantonese Chow Mein last night.  I told them no shrimp, so they really added in a whack of calamari.  And the calamari was good - not chewy - which is often an issue in restaurants like this.  I should have gone crunchy instead of soft.  Will order this again - to share- with a friend who finds everything in Toronto too spicy.

I always appreciate that the washrooms are NOT in the basement.  Hate descending into those Spadina basements.

2.5 would reflect my feeling more closely than 3, but I'll stick with 3 because the staff is fast and friendly.

I end up at the Noodle Bowl 5 or 6 times a year when I'm in the area to go to a concert.  Go to BMV first to pick up a couple of $1 books and some c.d's, then head over to the Bowl.

I'm not going because it's the most incredibly wonderful Asian food in Toronto.

I'm going because it's fast, it's hot (other than the Thai mango salad, which I quite like - nice and tart), and it's not going to taste too weird for my friends with more delicate tastebuds.

In the three or so years we've been going, no one's ever got sick after eating here, so that's definitely a recommendation in the world of near-Spadina Chinese restos.

Mango salad, noodles in a bowl with soup, or noodles on a plate with sauce.  It's reliable.

Bread bread pastries pastries schnitzel on a bun LOVE !

Love the baked goods here.  Really great traditional Eastern European pastries and breads.  Better prices than at a grocery store - and phenomenal toothiness and flavour to their breads.

I wouldn't call the place Cozy, but the owners are very pleasant and know how to bake. I occasionally see people sitting down to eat, but it's basically a run-through-and-grab-good-bread-and-danishes-place .

We occasionally get one of their schnitzels on a bun to share on a Saturday afternoon (gotta time it right, as they run out of these regularly) - good bread, good schnitzel, wowser sauce and veggies.  Can't imagine even trying to finish one by myself.

Recently tried their version of spinach strudel and some kind of ground meat strudel (I am sure there's a real name for these) - soooooo good.  The ladies knew I was taking them to the beach for a snack while we walked the dogs so they warmed them in the panini press for me and wrapped them in foil.  Did I mention soooooooooo good? Soooooooo good.  Will have those again.

Not wild about their muffins, but I think if you stick with what is within their traditional baking knowledge you'll be happy.  If you love Timmy's, the food might be a bit too real-tasting for you.

Given the number of bakeries, cafes and coffee shops that are now in the area, the folks at Celena's are going to have to step up their game.

Really nice toppings on their little pizzas and certainly affordable, but they really need to work on all of their bread-like offerings.   The pizza as well as the breads and buns we've tried have all been underbaked.

Nice cookies, but nothing extraordinary.

Too many better choices within a block's walk to bother going back.

Old-style Chinese-Canadian resto.  Burgers, chicken fried rice, the basics.  I think there's even grilled cheese on the menu.

Bright, clean, inexpensive.  Good place to read the paper on a rainy afternoon when you just want to be alone.

You won't get sick if you eat here.   Yup, that's what takes it to a 3 star rating.

The Tea Emporium

I'm a tea freak.  I've got about 40 or 50 canisters/packages of tea. Bagged tea/loose leaf.  I've got tea accessories.  I've got books about tea. I dream of doing a tea tour of Holland and Russia.   I like tea.

I've been used to going to Chinatown 3 and Kensington and St. Lawrence Market for my tea hits.  Or NYC, but that's a bit of a trip when what I want is a new tea.

Found this location of the Tea Emporium when a friend and I were looking for a beverage before dance class.  My friend was looking for a tea to make her MIL happy during their next visit.  I just needed tea to drink right then.

The lovely lovely woman running the shop that night directed me to the Swiss Schoko - chocolate, almonds and calendula on a black tea base.  Terrific with honey.   I started savouring while the staffer led my friend through variations of first flush Darjeeling (ranging in cost from about $15 - 50/100 gms - at the high end, they will sell 10 gms).  Terrific service and advice.

I'll be back at least once a week for a tea - and an occasional top up of a tea canister or two.

Asteria Souvlaki Place

You're at Asteria because you like really good, simply prepared food.  You're not here because you're looking for superlative service.

Seat yourself, get someone's attention, order your food, get your food, dive in, enjoy!  The souvlakis are consistently good, dips are among the best on the Danforth, salads are basic and fresh.

Good luck trying to get your coffee topped up, or a glass of water, or the bill, but again you're there for the food, not for the service.

Order everything you can imagine needing through the meal when you get the wait staff to your table.  You'll likely only get one run at this, unless you're immediate family.

Bathrooms - Danforth classic - down nasty crooked stairs - not disgusting, but don't go down unless there's no other option.

If the chicken souvlaki wasn't so good, this would be a 2, not a 4.  Yes. That's how bad the service is.
