The Red Tea Box

And yet we never feel at ease when visiting the Red Tea Box...
The seating is horribly uncomfortable. Low tables with busted antique swivel chairs are lovely to look at, but cause a serious back ache. The attitude and approach to service is also unfortunate as it often comes with an air of pretentiousness. And tea for $11 per pot is over priced in my estimation.
Difficult to remember and inflexible serving hours are the last source of frustration. Tea Bento served Monday to Saturday after 2pm, but 12pm-3:30pm on Sunday. Lunch Bento served Monday to Saturday 11am-2:30pm. I am writing these hours down so we can remember them, because despite the overly precious atmosphere, we return again and again for the food.

Incredible charcuterie, delicious libations, and a convivial atmosphere.
A few words of caution...
1. if you follow any dietary rules, throw them out the window.
2. you might have to wait for a table, it is worth the wait.

It is a small but cozy space with a warm hostess and talented cook. The linguine with slow roasted plum tomato sauce was excellent (better be for $20) and the mussels in a saffron scented fennel stew were divine and a comparative steal (at $12).
Pricing for some dishes might appear high at first, but works out nicely in the end (at least for our visit) with a slice of artfully prepared tiramisu offered on the house. Total lunch tab, no drinks, came to $40.

I swung by Manna for an excellent lunch of spicy korean rice cakes (Dukbokki) with beef, cabbage, and bean curd. All dishes at Manna are made fresh from scratch, reminds me of Sukho Thai in this respect. If my mom were an amazing Korean cook named Soo, this is what she would serve. Easily best Korean in Toronto. If you are anywhere nearby or simply craving a Korean home cooked meal, Manna is worth a visit!
