Maizie's Cafe & Bistro
Category: American (New)
- $5 glasses of Sangria that are really quite tasty
- Their Boneless Buffalo Dip, which tastes like buffalo wings dipped in cheese sauce, but comes in dip format with tortilla chips and pita wedges for dipping. our server suggested it and I can see why it is so popular. Melted cheesy deliciousness
- The owner has been in every time I've been there. He asks how you are enjoying everything and thanks you for coming. I think he might drink there every night (probably what I would do if I owned a restaurant). I don't really know him, so I don't know if he's a good guy or not, but I appreciate when the guy at the top actually spends time making sure everything is working.
- The burgers with the toppings inside are good and only $3 on Monday evenings.
- They have a huge list of salads
Things that aren't so awesome:
- It's pretty busy here all the time (wait, maybe this should go in the awesome category)
- The salads come in bowls exactly the same as we had growing up - meaning the same size that my mother would use to feed a family of four. It feels a little gluttonous and salad doesn't really keep until the next day if there's dressing on it, so it's hard to take the leftovers home.
Those are really my only complaints. I've been here a couple of times and Hannah (not sure if that's spelled correctly) has been the server every time. She is really helpful. I feel like I needed to give public props to her for that - I imagine other people like her as well.

The Good Egg
Categories: Breakfast & Brunch, Sandwiches
Sorry, i'll stop with the lame puns...but seriously, The Good Egg has figured out what people want in a breakfast joint and does it up well.
They put both a pitcher of water and a carafe of coffee on your table - Hello, weekend breakfast hangover essential. Nailed it.
The place has a huge variety of eggs, both filled with greasy cheese and meat AND super healthy options. The menu has a good marriage of spicy + egg as well, which I consider essential, as I'm not even sure if I like eggs, or just eat them every day as a vehicle for more hot sauce.
The boy had pancakes, which you can fill with a multitude of goodies, he went with banana-strawberry-peanut chip filled pancakes. I drooled and cursed my inability to eat wheat. Note: these panckaes are huge, the size of the plate so you probably only need one or two.
The place isn't fancy, but you'll probably always get a table (they also have a huge patio) and they've got a sweet $1 menu, so if you order something and need a little extra on the side, they've got you covered.
Breakfast brilliance.
The espresso is good. Really good. Like, I need to order an espresso along with whatever else I'm ordering just because it is so delicious.
The food is beautifully presented (little light on the gluten free snacks, but there's fruit, so no one is starving).
There's plugs all over.
The furniture is mostly easy to wipe down.
The bathroom door has written out instructions so no one is confused on when the door is locked. It also has nice smelling soap.
The patio is really pretty.
The clientele seems ridiculously cool. I kind of feel like maybe I'm going to be cooler by association if I hang out here. I'M GIVING IT A GO. Let me know how I'm doing.
A chain. The suburbs. Memories of Howie Mandel....These are all things that make me assume Boston Pizza is not the place for me.
Due to teeny tiny people related to me, I found myself Boston Pizza-bound ce soir and ended up pleasantly surprised!
Here's why:
1. Great staff! I remember when my friends in high school worked at chain restaurants. They were so keen! Same goes with Boston Pizza - none of the snarly hipster attitude we've become so accustomed to around town. Good job, young people! (I feel like my mom....)
2. GLUTEN FREE CRUST! Don't underestimate the power of chain restaurants to be on top of trends! They make individual pizzas with gluten free crust - and they do it right. I was really impressed with both the texture and taste of my mini-pizza.
3. Extremely family friendly. If you are at a table with 4 kids under 4 and some of them feel like break-dancing, that's cool. ...or so I've heard...
4. uhh...parking! A ton of it and it's free. Who knew?
5. A little of everything. Is Boston Pizza the culinary highlight of my week? No. However, they do stuff well and there is variety for picky eaters in your crowd. Sometimes, that's what's most important.
FInally, I think they do deals for sporty-type teams. If I ever improve my hand-eye coordination, I can see this being a good thing. more beer for less = win!
Anyway, Thai Nong Khai is worth the trek out to 75th Ave SE. Their dishes are fresh and expertly prepared. You can get most dishes with any kind of meat you like and they have an extensive vegetarian selection.
The decor is strip-mall + Thai (cute) and the service is prompt. They have an almost-life-sized Santa that they roll out at Christmas time, he sings songs when you walk by.
It's a cool place to bring kids and also a great place for a date. Seriously, the food makes this place right for any occasion. I cannot say enough about it.
Go, try it and then remember me when you're buying Christmas presents. You're welcome.
Bagolac has one of the best bowls of satay beef soup in the city. The beef comes out quite rare, is thin and cooks quickly and there are a massive amount of noodles in the bowl. The broth is spicy, very peanut-y and the murky brown-red kind. If you love it, you'll know what I mean. Most places serve either this or the clear, heavy-on-the-lemongrass kind.
The menu is massive and includes both Vietnamese and Thai cuisine on it. Some of the dishes are best served family style, so double check when you order to see if it comes with some type of rice, or you need to order it on the side. It's worth a couple of visits to get through some of the variety. Even if you love your first meal, don't always order the same thing - there's plenty of delicious choices!
The location is great - within walking distance of Chinook Station/Mall and plenty of parking in front.
Bagolac is huge, so I think it's a pretty good choice for families. It isn't open on Sunday, which has left me feeling disappointed a few times, but I guess we all need a day off...
However, I'm not usually one to stray from my usual americano and DeVille doesn't disappoint.
The food is pretty snazzy. The pastries look good and the salads are delicious. They also serve booze there, which makes it an easy transition from place-to-have-coffee to place-to-meet-friends-after-work. DeVille is great for hanging out and getting some work done. They are a little short on outlets, so we're talking the-length-of-your-battery-life as a reasonable amount of time to spend there.
The interior is quite modern, but not cold and it's great for watching the world go by on 1st St. Speaking of, 1st St is really starting to feel like a mini-community and DeVille is one of the places playing a part in this, in my opinion.

Eat! Eat! In Inglewood
Categories: Breakfast & Brunch, Sandwiches
Eat! Eat! has all of the standard breakfast and lunch fare and they do it up right. Not fancy, just well done. They also have a specials board where they include a rotating menu of fancy/decadent options (stuffed french toast, interesting things with eggs). They do really good soup here and I'd recommend the yam chips.
The staff is usually the same and pretty friendly, the coffee isn't great, but isn't bad and the decor seems to be inspired by a box of crayons.
Inglewood is lucky to have such a great variety of restaurants. If you're in the mood for a budget-friendly, home-cooked meal, I say Eat! Eat! at Eat! Eat! (see what I did there?).
That's probably all I need to write for a review, but just in case, here's some more:
1886 is tucked in behind the Barley at Eau Claire, in a heritage house (that one would assume was built in 1886). It's small inside, and whoever decorated really seems to love clocks...and buffalo heads. While it gets busy on the weekends, it's usually a quick wait - and no longer than any other diner on a weekend.
The food at 1886 is really good, but a little higher in price compared to Galaxy or Nellies. I would say the potatoes are worth it (especially smothered in cheese) and the location is great if you are near Eau Claire. Items are exactly what you'd expect from a breakfast place in a cute building - eggs, meat, chili, breakfast sandwich and burrito...
The staff has been the same as long as I can remember. They are busy and know what they are doing. Friendly and efficient, you can't beat it.
I am a fan. If you need more details on the melted cheese - it's gooey, stringy and homemade. It's more melted-cheese than cheese sauce.
Date
The food, location and service are all great. It's definitely a trifecta of awesome.
We were only in Flagstaff for the day and Cuvee seemed like the perfect place to sit on patio and watch the world go by. Indeed, it was.
I had a raspberry French75. I'm not really into fruity cocktails, so I was a bit nervous of ordering this, but if there's a French75 on the menu, you gotta order it, right? I was really impressed. It was a French75 with a little muddled raspberry, no fake raspberry or syrupy sweetness at all. Hooray!
We ordered the smoked salmon appetizer. I appreciated that it came with cucumber slices and apple slices - really refreshing flavors with the salmon and dill creme fraiche. We also ordered fish tacos, which I've been dreaming about ever since. Seriously, I recognize I have a bit of a taco problem and could probably eat tacos every day for the rest of my life, but these were delicious. Lots of cabbage crunch, lots of spice and a generous amount of filling in each. They probably aren't great if you are trying eat in a prim and proper manner, they're a little messy.
Finally, we finished dinner off with some Earl Grey Truffles. Dark chocolate with a hint of bergamot. Very smooth, very chocolate, very worthy of ordering on your own without intention of sharing.
I've only been there once, but hope to get back!
