Coffee & Tea,
Canadian (New)
Among the best third wave coffee shops in Victoria. I buy their Causeway (espresso) roast on a regular basis for my manual pavonni pro espresso machine (that's a fancy friggin home machine, in case you didn't know) which I grind in a rancillio rocky grinder. I've compared it to mirage, discovery, fernwood and bean around the world. Causeway is consistent in its flavour, roast and natural oils and I can use exactly the same setting on my grinder from batch to batch (even with 30 notches, 1 notch makes a difference) as well as the same tamp.
Their baristas are knowledgeable. I asked one of them to describe what they are doing when they pull a shot and they gave me a large amount of detail. They also offered to coach me with my machine if I brought it in.
This is not a run-in-and-grab-my-c hai-latte-on-the-way -to-yoga shop. It is a coffee shop where the owners are obsessed with producing good coffee. I read that they opened because there was no good coffee in victoria at the time. Your coffee is best enjoyed over a conversation or a book in a ceramic mug. Don't forget to admire the art they bring in. Some of it has been quite good.
Decaf is, as usual, not as good as the espresso roast. I've not decided whether I like this or Discovery's decaf more.
Neighbourhood is interesting (quadra village) with good stores around there including anarchist bookstore, caribbean food, fairways grocery store (aka festival of wierd meats), a dutch food store, a farmacy/post office, a mac store etc. They close a bit early :(
New experience new review one star.
I was there on a Wednesday night and being the only person who wasn't friends with a DJ or a bartender or a bouncer, I paid $5. $5 cover to be the only one on the dance floor! I understand that Victoria is slow during the week but that is just not a good way to make your bar more popular. It just alienates regular customers.
Not only that, the beer (bowen island on tap) tasted like bakers yeast mixed with frothy vomit and they didn't even want to give me a glass of water.
They got some stars from me in a previous review for playing good music, but tonight this bar deserves only one. Screw you hush, give me my $5 back.
Hush is a downstairs night club featuring only electronic music. They bring in DJs from out of town regularly (but not every weekend) and have a good website with online ticketing.
The place is fairly small (300 people?) but it is mostly dancefloor. The dance floor is nice (slidy, no sticky) except a couple of parts that are sagging (those parts aren't near the front though).
Sound system is good, club is too hot in the summer, crowd is friendly and usually civilized (not a fighting/shit faced drama club), not a meat market.
I might have given it three stars for being a bit small and not bringing in DJs more often, but it is the best (and usually the only) electronica club in Victoria.
Oh and they have a pool table and a bar somewhere in there. People drink mostly beer and coolers there.

First of all, this place is loads nicer than the "Chemical free wrap joint" that used to occupy the same space (see my review of that one). They now have soft background music, a couch to sit on, as well as tables and chairs, and art on the walls. The owner is very friendly, and eager to accomodate, since they are trying to establish clientele. She is the mothering european type, who makes you smile as she fusses about your comfort.
The owner says she wants people to spend the day drinking coffee and working with the free wifi. I didn't see anyone doing it, but it didn't seem like so bad a place for it.
The food, yes yes, the food! The menu is brief, and written in coloured chalk, on a board installed on the wall. There is a focus on Gluten Free, but the food can also be made Vegan. There is a case with small quiches and pastries, and personal pizzas that are heated to order. In addition, they make delicious wraps. The coffee is provided by Fernwood Roasters (a reputable supplier, but not as good as Café Fantastico's, a half a block away), and it tasted fresh.
I ordered a Vegan wrap, which has tofu and Daiya (a delicious vegan cheese with no soy or gluten, that melts like real cheese). The food portion was a bit small, but it came with a side of salad and the taste and healthiness made up for its size.
They also sell a few Vegan and Gluten Free items, some of which can be found across the street at Fairways. It is a good place to ask about V and GF cooking. I recommend Santé to anyone curious about V or GF food, and to people wanting a working coffee shop with healthy and delicious food choices. (needless to say, you should check it out if you are a celiac).
I did find, however, that the food took a while to make (it was only a wrap), and that they need some bigger items on display. The gravy train is going to come from people stepping in to grab lunch while at work, or on errands at Quadra Village, and if they see nothing but tiny quiches, and dietary restricted food, they might not even stop to try it. And then when they order something larger, they won't come back if it takes 10 minutes and they are still hungry after they leave.
