Beacon Drive In Ltd

When I visited Victoria with my girlfriend, one of the build-ups for the trip was to go have "the best soft serve in the world". Now I am a self-professed ice cream nut, which my girlfriend is firmly aware of, so hearing this boast required verification.

We went to Beacon's on a rainy Tuesday and I ordered the large soft server dipped in chocolate. And the verdict? It's really good. Compared to other soft server I have tasted it is much richer. Seems to help keep it together as well as it didn't drip all over my hand like most soft serve. Definitely going to be a regular stop in Victoria for an ice cream lover like me.

Upon sitting down at our table I was not sure what to expect from this restaurant. The atmosphere was nice, but the menus were somewhat cheap. So I wasn't sure if the food was going to match the decor or the menus.

Luckily the food went towards the decor. My ribs were good, with the meat practically slipping off the bone. Service was also good. It definitely wasn't mind-blowing, but I didn't feel like I was ripped off either.

John's Place Restaurant

Ever since my trip to Brussels I have a constant craving for good waffles. So when I heard John's Place had waffles served with cream cheese syrup I had to give them a shot when I visited Victoria.

I was not disappointed. The waffles were really good! And on top of the good food I also received friendly, prompt service. Overall a very pleasant experience that I would be happy to repeat.

To the point:

- The table for our reservation was not ready when we arrived four minutes late.

- The maitre d' asked us to stand to the side while we waited for said table to be set instead of offering us a place at the bar.

- Server was nice and attentive.

- My medium rare/rare rib eye actually had some burnt spots which should never happen on such a lightly cooked piece of meat. Otherwise it was a good.

- Gelato that came with my dessert had some ice crystals in it.

- Jazz was great.

I have never had a famous Japa Dog. While that might sound blasphemous coming from someone who lives in Vancouver, it's because the Dawg House is so damn good!

I lived in Berkeley, CA for several years and I went to local hot dog chain, Top Dog, regularly. Ordering brat w/ some mayo or cheese was always a pleasure. But then I moved to Vancouver.

Luckily, early on in my time here, I found the Dawg House. While there menu is not as extensive at Top Dog, the food is just as good. You will always find the hot dog cart outside of the Future Shop with the same friendly staff, always ready to cook you up a brat w/ their array of condiments at your beck and call. I am partial to the brat w/ their Dawg House cheese condiment.

If you ever find yourself within walking distance of Burrard and Broadway and want a hot dog, I would highly recommend walking past the Dawg House and picking something up.

Dharma Kitchen

As a meat lover, I went to Dharma Kitchen to please my girlfriend. I knew my selection of dishes would be limited as I don't find tofu tasty and there are many popular fruits and vegetables I do not like.

But I did manage to find a dish and it was A-OK. The curry sauce was nothing special, but it still tasted fine nonetheless. If my girlfriend decided she wanted vegetarian again I would be willing to go here.

Their hot chocolate with the added peppermint flavouring is superb! Being a non-coffee drinker I have ended up trying hot chocolate all over this town and this is the best I have had yet.

All of the positive reviews that have preceded this one are all accurate: the food is very good. Heck, I loved the veggie tacos and I am *definitely* a bug fan typically of vegetarian dishes. And on top of it all the service is friendly.

But there are some shortcomings to this place which is why they lose a star. One is to remember your cash. Another, as Marc D. points out, they could take the taste up a level if they made the tortillas fresh.

Brett's To-The-Point™ Review:

Food was good (better than Indian Oven but also more expensive), service was fine (waitress had no personality but the owner is very nice and both were attentive), and the decor is nice (sans the power cable coming out of the glowing buddha in front of one of the water features in the shop).

Secret Garden Tea Company

As part of a UYE, I had my first high tea at the Secret Garden. Overall it was a good experience. Food varied from great to good, tea was great, and service was friendly. The shop is a little cramped and if you are a guy you better be able to tolerate lots of girly things (the little section for things they sell are all for girls). But overall it was a very good experience.
