Lawrence Restaurant

I've only been for their brunch, but it doesn't disappoint.

Not much has changed from Sparrow's old rotating brunch menu, and that's definitely not a bad thing. If anything, I prefer the light, airy atmosphere of Lawrence. Check out the funky wallpaper in the restroom if you get a chance. And of course, check out the hip, beautiful people who flock here for brunch.

Service is friendly and professional, and the food is fantastic. I keep ordering eggs benedict at other brunch spots and being disappointed because nothing quite matches what I've had at Sparrow/Lawrence.

Be prepared for a bit of a wait for brunch, although they do take reservations for larger parties. Brunch will run you upwards of $20, but it's worth it.

The fried chicken is amazing. Do yourself a favour and share a bucket with friends. Portobello tacos are delicious and my friends really enjoyed the fish tacos although I haven't had a chance to try them yet. Have also had the steak burrito, which was good, but next time I'd stick with tacos and friend chicken.

The lemonade with vodka is great.

This place is small, so be prepared to show up early or wait for a seat. You do feel rushed to leave, but that's understandable given that seats are at a premium. Once the patio is open that should help.

Both times I've eaten here I've been seated at the bar, along the wall. The napkin dispensers on the walls will remind you of school, but you'll soon see that they're really quite useful.

Great place for some kick ass tex mex eats, it's quickly become one of my favourites in Montreal.

Le Cartet

Great stylish brunch spot in the old port.

Good selection of food on the menu and the servings are generous. I had the brunch Cartet, which came with a ham and cheese croissant, salmon cake, salad, fruit skewer, aged cheddar, and a fig. It was so generous that I couldn't finish it, but it was delicious nonetheless. My friends ordered brunch sante and brunch atlantique and everyone was very satisfied with their food.

If you go for the brunch and mimosa you're looking at about $30 with tip, but given the quality of the food, the service, and the beautiful decor it's worth it. Would definitely go back!

I was really happy to see there was a new sushi restaurant in my neighbourhood and even happier to find out that the food is good and the prices are reasonable. Yes!

Friendly service, a good variety of specialty and classic rolls, nice presentation, and I have to say - they did a nice job of the branding, too.

My bf and I tried the green salad, two of the numaki rolls (which are wrapped in rice paper), two types of sashimi and two of the classic rolls. We didn't love the numaki rolls (lobster and grilled chicken), so we'll skip those next time. But the green salad was a nice serving size and I really liked the light vinaigrette. My bf enjoyed the sashimi, and the two classic rolls I ordered (spicy salmon and shrimp tempura) were delicious!

I'll definitely be back!

Chez José

I was introduced to Chez Jose by one of my coworkers who is pretty much obsessed with the place. It's a really funky little cafe and there are almost always lineups of people getting takeout sandwiches at lunch. Needless to say I grab lunch here (with said coworker) at least once a week and I have trouble straying from the churrasco. It's just so tasty and satisfying, and for a mere $5 it's a great value. They have a nice selection of pastries, too. A lot of my coworkers are partial to the berry pie, but so far I've only tried the pain au chocolat, which was delicious.

This place is still amazing, but I think I may have overhyped the hot and sour soup. I think it was especially good the first time I've had it, but ever since then it's just been pretty good but nothing spectacular. The search for a perfect bowl of hot and sour soup continues...

Oh and definitely get the coleslaw. Really yummy.

I had dinner here tonight on the suggestion of Jeff S. (thanks, Jeff!) and the dumplings did not disappoint.

Being the hot and sour soup fiend that I am, I had to order a bowl when I spotted it on the menu for a mere $2.99. I'm glad that I did, the soup was entirely satisfying and it's easily the best I've tried in Montreal so far. My friends and I decided to skip on the other appetizers and headed straight for the main event. We ordered beef and coriander steamed, lamb and green onion steamed, and curry chicken fried.  If you decide to order fried dumplings there is an extra $1.50 fee but we thought it was worth it for the variety.

The curry chicken dumplings were tasty and quite flavourful, although we got tired of the taste about halfway through the dumplings. Next time I may just order half an order instead . Oh yeah, you can get an order of half and half as long as the two flavours are the same price and there's an extra 50 cent fee.

My favourite dumplings were the beef and coriander, but this may very well be due to my strong bias towards anything that contains cilantro/coriander. Both types of steamed dumplings had just enough soup inside to add a delicious burst of flavour without being unmanageable. But a word of caution, you may want to give them a minute or two to cool down to avoid burning your mouth.

All in all it was a great meal and very affordable. Next time I will be sure to order some of the salads to break up the dumplings.

As a side note, one of my friends is from Northern China and he said there's a dumpling restaurant near his house with the same name. Ha! And he found the dumplings were very comparable to that restaurant.

La Chilenita

I love when restaurants clearly have a specialty, you just know that they focus on that one thing and do it right. La Chilenita is all about the empanadas, and man, are they ever good!

La Chilenita has 3 locations around the plateau, but I like this one the best because you can watch them make all the empanadas. Everything from flattening out the dough to wrapping them up.

La Chilenita has a great variety of fillings for their empanadas, and about half are vegetarian. So far I've tried 3 kinds and they've all been delicious. I've also tried their churrasco sandwich, which was amazing, too. I may just have to try their burrito next.

For about $6 you can have a great lunch at La Chilenita , but unfortunately they close at 6pm (at least on weekdays). I found that out the hard way when I tried to pick up some dinner after work!

Update: They just posted summer hours, they close at 4pm now! This is definitely a lunch spot.

This is a great brunch restaurant. The decor is pretty slick with graffiti on the walls (not to mention a motorcycle) in the front and rounded booth seating with mod lighting in the back. Not to mention the dim red lighting in the bathroom with big mirrors and a tv in the wall (it was playing Dark Knight when I was there). Good music, too (although probably a good idea to avoid it if you're hung over).

Now on to the food. There's a good choice of brunch options that ranges from pancakes to eggs benedicts and even a breakfast burrito topped with guac. I ordered the latter and it came with a skewer of fresh fruit (a big step up from the regular slice of melon and orange) and delicious garlic rosemary potatoes. The servings are generous.

Be prepared to wait in line and budget at least $15 per person.

St-Viateur Bagel & Café

I've been a fan of St. Viateur bagels since way back, but until recently had never dined in.

So, here's the deal. The sandwiches are a bit overpriced at around $10 (especially considering the cost of an individual bagel) but if you get a bagel with a spread, it's a decent deal. I had the salmon spread with a side of avocado and an extra bagel for about $8. The spreads come with fruit, which in this case was two pieces of melon. My only complaint is that my avocado wasn't as fresh as it could have been, and one part of it was brown and inedible, but I had so much spread leftover that I wasn't overly concerned. Other than that, the food came fast and I'd eat in again.

Of course on my way out I had to grab a dozen bagels for the road. You can also buy cream cheese and smoked salmon to go, perfect for a picnic!

Kazu

I had been looking forward to trying out Kazu after reading a positive review in Montreal Mirror last week, but unfortunately they were closed for renovations the first time I popped by. Thankfully they're back in business and it was definitely worth the second trip out.

Upon entering the restaurant my friend and I were greeted with a friendly round of "irasshaimase", which means welcome in Japanese (and is something you will hear every time you enter a restaurant or store in Japan). Off to a good start!

I already knew I wanted to try the salmon and tuna bowl based on reviews I'd read and my friend settled on a bowl of ramen (I believe this is only on the lunch menu). The salmon and tuna bowl was delicious and I'm pretty sure this will be my standby meal at Kazu, because yes, I will be returning. It was composed of rice, a good sized serving of tuna and salmon sashimi, and salad all topped with a sesame dressing and some crunchy noodles. My friend enjoyed her ramen and we both agreed that the broth wasn't too salty at all.

All in all, with the traditional decor, friendly staff and tasty food I'm sure this is a restaurant I'll return to again and again, which is encouraged by the owner who will shout out "see you tomorrow!" as you leave.

NB: They only accept cash.

Update: I've been here twice now and there was a lineup the last time I went, around dinner time. It's a pretty tiny restaurant so it fills up quick, and you may end up seated at the bar. But despite the extra heat from the open kitchen, I like being able to see all the food prep. Just be prepared to wait a bit to get in, looks like word's gotten out!
