I only come for two dishes:  XLB, and their stir fried rice cake.  I've been here a few times and have tried other dishes that were just "meh".  Service ranges from average to just passable.  Parking is awful...especially when people who are leaving tend to take their sweet time dropping their bags, warming the car, checking their hair, adjusting their seatbelts, ensuring their toosh is comfortably situated, and then the kicker is....they still sit there.  really??!?  i have no idea why people in this particular parking lot are like that--whatever happened to common courtesy?  hopefully, you'll have better luck.

every OCD organizer freak's dream...but even if you aren't, you'll find some cool things in here.  you ever wonder who buys all this stuff to organize your stuff??  yup...that would be me.

i can spend hours in there discovering new designs for organizing, but then the owner would probably just think i'm shoplifting (really sir, i'm just super indecisive)!

today's find? a small chrome rabbit with extra large earts to hold my new wedding band and other day to day rings.  i'm still debating whether or not to get the bamboo/stainless steel shower caddy to give my shower the "spa" look...

stay too long and you may do some major damage to your bank account.

Fun store to stop in among the other retail stores on Robson.  Perfect place for a pick me up of Japanese snacks, drinks, etc. if you feel your blood sugar is getting low from the exhaustive crowds.  You'll find weekly specials at a lower price, but beware of the expiration dates on food products!  Most of the time, it won't be an issue since it's hard not to start munching right as you're walking out of the store.  I even found these curry flavored puffs that were discontinued years ago--score!!!  You bet I stocked up on bags of these...I think my cashier thought I was a little nutty since I practically bought out their entire stock.  In my defense, I sent some home to my sister.

You can find ready-to-eat foods, cooking ingredients, noodles, frozen foods, beverages, snacks, candies, beauty and hair products to soft serve ice cream...it's like a Japanese version of 7-11.  What's not to like?  There's something for everybody.

McNoodle House

McNoodle...so weird of a name.  Based on the name and location, I thought it was going to be an Asian hamburger joint or somewhere that I could get a fusion of Irish/Chinese food.

Since then, I've been here a number of times and this is one of the places I have to bring my Cantonese family and friends when they visit Vancouver.  Sure, the noodles here may be pricier for the size, but quality over quantity, people!  You must order any one of their noodle dishes with wontons or dumplings, congee, and deep fried beancurd.

If two generations of native Hong Kongers are telling me that this place is authentic, then I have to try it--and try I did!  Never judge based on first appearances...you'll be surprised.

The food and service is stellar and definitely ideal for a date.  The staff here knows how to make you feel welcome the moment you step in throught the doors.

I met a girlfriend here during a weeknight and our dinner turned into an extended evening of conversation sharing wine and an awesome meal.  I love how our waitress knew to just split our main course without us asking.  We probably stayed much longer than we intended, but we were never rushed--service with a smile.  Highlights?  The gnocchi and the apple tarte tartin this time around!!!

This may turn into one of my favorite restaurants in Gastown, but I'll have to come back a few more times to see how consistent they are with food and service.  Will have to try their cocktails next time since we split a bottle of wine this time.

H-Mart Korean Grocery Store

For the lack of Korean groceries downtown, I suppose this H-Mart will have to do.  Their prices are generally higher (location, location, location), but that doesn't mean you're getting top produce for top dollar.  I always skip the meat section since I refuse to pay $20 or more for a packet of not so good looking beef, chicken, pork, etc.  They used to have a seafood section, but not it's turned into a sushi/sashimi, do it yourself pre-packaged soup section.  Other than that, you'll find lots of frozen meats and seafood (I wonder why) and a small fresh produce section.  I usually come here when I'm short on time and already downtown.

They also have a decent foodcourt upstairs bakery downstairs--three in one stop for those who are on the go.

Yamato Sushi Restaurant

I used to live in this neighborhood and Yamato consistently delivered fresh sushi at a ridiculously inexpensive price.  I'm usually skeptical of places that are unusually cheap, but seeing that it's constantly busy in restaurant (clausterphobic small) and with take out orders, I'm only reassured that I won't regret ordering here with the high sushi/sashimi turnover.  I only come here for take out--their party platters are my go-to when I need to feed a large number of non picky eaters with little notice.  Easy on the wallet and consistently fresh sushi...that's what I call no fuss, no muss!

PARKING IS HORRENDOUS, but I'm willing to search for a spot because the food is solid for an HK cafe and the service is good...and dare I say sometimes above good? It's worth the parking hassle for me to eat in a clean environment, food you cannot go wrong with no matter what you choose, and service that puts you at ease.  Standard HK cafe fare with combos that include a beverage and/or other sides for $10 or less.

If you love a great deal and don't mind an MSG buzz after a meal (hey, everyone gets their kicks differently), this is your kind of place.  I actually know people who enjoy coming here which is why I've been to Honolulu at least two times. I can't say I've experienced horrible service (I was expecting it after reading reviews prior) because our waitresses actually smiled and brought us water and refilled with no problems.  Service was really quick and surprisingly there place was hustling and bustling late night.  Our dishes looked standard, everything tasted decent and I didn't have an issue with my hot milk tea.  But then I was on the car ride home and felt the all too telling MSG buzz...I knew it was too cheap to be true.  Sigh.

Is it just me or are the people who work here just plain mean?  To be fair, I have heard from the older Cantonese generation that that's just how HK Cafe service is in the motherland.  [But we're not in the motherland anymore....]

If you can take the abuse, like being ignored or just simply can't make it to Richmond, they do provide decent solid HK cafe food (although a bit pricier).  Check out their breakfast and lunch menu deals if you do decide to dine at Copa.  You'll get a drink with your combo meal, but not service with a smile.  I'd give this place a 3 star rating, but service is consistently terrible, so I have to drop a star.

Free parking in the back, folks, but that's the highlight.
