Fiorio

My favourite hair stylist - Hal has just moved from the Yorkville Fiorio location and has been taking ownership of this Fiorio for the past little while.

I'm truly going to be sad when I move downtown again as I've been coming to him religiously for the past ~2 years now. His haircuts have been so perfect I cannot even begin to bring myself to even consider anyone else's cuts decent.

This location has awesome staff and every time I come here I hear of more customers leaving with a huge smile on their face, thanking the staff again and again.

The Richmond Hill / Markham area is lacking decent places for haircare as it's all either tailored for the asian population or are crappy 10 minute cut shops in the multitude of malls around the area.

Fiorio isn't always the cheapest but you know when you come here you're going to get a good cut.

This place used to be a lot better but they recently increased their prices, changed their menu and offered a lot less meat in their dishes (and a sh$t load more noodles!)

If you're looking to have a nice carb overload this might be a good place to come to. It actually looks pretty nice and the staff are friendly and attentive and try to cater to the business crowd (with their business lunch special for 2). Luckily for us interns, the lunch specials are also pretty cheap ($4.99-6.99 although now I think it's 5.99-7.99).

Also, if you're thinking of coming here for Xiao ling bao's don't bother. Asian legend is in the same plaza and Ding Tai Fung is only a 5-10 min drive away!

Second Cup

*4.5 Stars*

I think we all know now that not all Second Cups and Starbucks' are made equal and this shining star a prime example!

A cafe I like to dub Cafe Persia for Students (I don't think that requires that much of an explanation) it's a perfectly oversized and neatly laid out coffee shop that's ALWAYS busy! Busy with students studying for exams (all the York and UofT commuters study here, along with the chiropractors college around the corner). Busy with people doing their work here and meeting clients. And busy with locals making this their one and main meet up place in the area!

The owner (Persian of course), one of the nicest people you'd meet has managed to keep her baristas for years now and it's no wonder why; all of their staff are amazing. They'll come and clear your tables, they remember everyone by face, make your drink just as you like it and are extremely patient when they try to kick at all 40+ customers for closing at 11 P.M.

With good Wifi (and power plugs), a nice small patio (no view so don't bother if that's your thing) and super comfy seating this is my go to place whenever I need to sit down get some work done. If only there were Second Cups like this downtown!

Danforth Pizza House

Category: Pizza

I have to say maybe I just don't get good pizza but this place was just 'okay'. It was good pizza don't get me wrong but nothing that everyone makes me think I need to trek out here for! The ingredients are very normal, there are only a few toppings you can order and the prices are okay. The sauce is authentically italian and the crust is 'meh'.

It's your standard home-made pizza and honestly the only great thing about Danforth Pizza House is the amazing 80-90 year old man making everything by himself behind the counter. I almost wanted to go over there and hug him... but I probably would have crushed his bones.

Also, don't even think about sitting down here, your best bet (if you have a car) is to order it in advance and head on over to the beach and sit on the boardwalk and have the pizza!

It was nice to try it out but I really doubt I'll be back again.

OH and most importantly: CASH ONLY (have a look at their register in the pictures)

The Burger's Priest

Category: Burgers
Neighbourhood: Upper Beaches

5 star rating

The Burger's Priest is a completely unpretentious, no nonscene, grassroots burger "hut" (it's hard calling this a restaurant when it doesn't really have a table and only 4 or 5 stools). Regardless they know their meat and they damn well know how to make a mean burger. With only two real menu items - a beef patty, and their amazing "priest" (read: vegetarian) patty -  and about a few other sides, you know they're focusing and making sure they do burgers justice.

I've been losing interest in hamburgers over the years and when my friends (notably Payam Z. ) wanted to drag us around to have a burger near the beaches, I wasn't all too excited. But damn am I glad that I went along and became witness to what really puts ALL other burger places in Toronto to shame!!

I'll let you read through others who are much more capable then me describe about how amazing this place is and how down to earth the staff are, but I guarantee you, you will not regret your stop here if you're looking for a good burger!

Guu Izakaya

So Guuuuuuuud !!!

After everything I kept hearing about Guu and all the reviews on Yelp I finally decided it'd be worth it to wait in line for an hour to get my fill at Guu Izakaya.

We got there at about 9:30 and were seated at 10:40 but we were a group of 4, keep in mind if you go in as a couple, you'd usually be seated within 20 minutes! Now on to the good stuff.

Food: First off, holy sh*t, their Avocado and Prawn with mayo and Panko topped dish special was by far one of the best things I've had in YEARS. The rest of the food wasn't anything extraordinary in the culinary world but what makes the food amazing is their execution. It's a fine line between good and great and Guu Izakaya makes sure they work to get across that line! Everything tasted amazing, perfectly cooked and well presented. Be ready to order about 3 dishes per person (will cost you around $7 / dish).

Staff: The staff were absolutely awesome and super friendly and started to teach us what words to say when we walk in (given how much yelling there is going on when you enter and leave) and made the whole experience a blast. Food came out like it was on a train, not too fast (as if to overcrowd our table) and not too slow (to a point where we were ever waiting for a dish).

Atmosphere: Amazing! If you're looking for a quiet date place this isn't it. There's TONS of yelling, you'll most likely be eating at a communal table but there's something still classy and modern about the place (I especially enjoyed the Katana Sapporo tap on the bar).

Overall, Guu Izakaya provided a food experience I haven't had in a long time and was really craving and I'll definitely be back for more soon.

Hot diggity damn, talk about a sweet ass party. Kat I have to say you're a saint for forcing Payam Z. to force me to come!

I'm so glad I made it out to one of the best - if not THE best - Elite Event in Toronto!! The night got out to a shaky start when gold glitter were introduced and smeared onto my face (absolutely involuntarily obviously) but luckily with FOTES being in proximity of the village, it was all quite fitting.

So much delicious food, amazing drinks, perfect service and most importantly the coolest people in town. Kat you couldn't have planned a better final event if you tried!! Thanks again!

Came here for lunch hoping for some decent food and a place to watch the World Cup matches since they had TV's. The hostess seated us at the bar which was fine but I'm not sure if they forgot about people still wanting to order food at the bar as it took us nearly an hour to get our food!

Luckily the bartender tried to salvage the situation and offered our group free drinks but it went downhill afterwards with sub-par food for the price. We all tried something different and portions were small and the food was far too simple for what we were expecting (but at that point we were starving and would've eaten anything). I guess we should've known better to go to a restaurant inside a mall!

Murphy's Law Irish Pub

Category: Pubs
Neighbourhood: Upper Beaches

2 star rating
 6/21/2010 1 Check-in Here
It seems like the owners of this pub already knew what was coming when they named this place Murphy's Law (i.e. what can go wrong will go wrong). I had really high hopes for Murphy's Law, given how jealous I was every time I walked past it and saw their rooftop garden patio. This past weekend I finally made my way in to watch a World Cup match and was pretty disappointed.

My main gripes:

1) Why are is there a "Please Wait To Be Seated" sign at a pub!? We waited for a good 5 minutes before we walked in and a bartender asked us to go back out and wait again for the hostess (who took another few minutes to make it out and seat us while we missed precious minutes of the match).

2) A pub with small TV's positioned awkwardly, definitely not a place you want to be to watch a match

3) Dear lord what is with their washrooms!? Not only is it disgustingly humid in there (you can imagine what happens when people go #2), it's a tiny box and you can almost get killed. Yes I said it, the washroom can kill you. The sink is RIGHT next to the door and given how small it is you have no choice but to be right in line for someone to kick the door open and knock you out (the person who kicked it, missed my face by a hair).

4) What's up with the ~$15+ pub dishes; are you a restaurant?

5) And so the food came.. wait nope definitely not a restaurant with this crappy food. Wait.. not even a pub either, what the hell is this crap you're serving me?

Seems like Murphy's Law is really in effect at this pub! I'd really only come here again strictly to have drinks and only because of the location and rooftop otherwise this place is a definite no-go.

The Fish Store & Sandwiches

5 star rating

The Fish Store is the EXACT reason why I love Yelp. I've walked by it at least a hundred times and never thought about even giving it a glance until I read all the fantastic reviews and thank goodness.

If you're looking for a nice light (not light as in small portions, but light as in you won't feel bloated or nasty in anyway) lunch or dinner with the most refreshing flavours, give one of these amazing sandwiches a try!

When you walk into the "shack" you eyes fix on the fresh fish on display that will soon be in your tummy and you realize for the price you're paying you're actually getting a decent amount of fish. I ordered the clam chowder soup as well and although it wasn't what I was expecting (I like my clam chowders a little chunky) it was still pretty tasty.

My absolute favourite part of coming to the Fish Store however is the bread they serve the sandwiches on!! Nice and crispy on the outside but surprisingly thin and airy and it won't get soggy or break apart!!!

I can't wait to go to The Fish Store again!
