Chocolada

We occasionally get cakes from Chocolada and funnily enough, I rarely make the trip out here for pastries or anything other than cake. The cake is heavenly, but make sure you're not counting calories or anything as they mean business.

They are nothing like some dufflet cakes, and the Chinese variety, though, I do enjoy it from time to time, are very light in texture and taste in comparison. I wouldn't suggest this location as a good place for a sit-in tea and coffee venue as it's a dull outlet in a commercial plaza, though they do make coffee and espresso and sell pastries by unit and cakes by slice, etc.

I tried the apple pastry and a chocolate mousse cup on a recent visit, -the apple pastry wasn't very fresh (it may be that I came too late in the day) but the mousse was phenomenal and so cute.

CaG makes the best crepes in Toronto. I love their savory crepes which are perfect to eat while you stroll down the annex. They make all of their crepes to order as it should be, -none of that unacceptable ready-made stack o' crepes waiting to be topped. As with their Yorkville location, this one also has A+ service.

For tourists (especially Americans), Crepes a GoGo is a must-try.
I recommend their lemonade, I finally got to try it at this location.

I pretty much agree with everything that's been said in Jennifer K's review. I enjoyed my view of the front kitchen, getting glimpses of the chef doing our pasta, since the option of meat was no longer available at that time (not that I was interested).

Our bread basket was an assortment of delicious, though I would have loved some decanted olive oil on the side. The dish, gnocchi with lobster was creamy and very well seasoned. The staff was very cordial, and it felt like the place was pretty much closed for the night. When I return, I'll make sure it's a lunchtime visit.

Hawker Bar

After the bittersweet CMYE at Church, a few of us headed over to Hawker Bar to test out the waters. They don't yet have a liquor license, though the virginal replacements are very sweet and refreshing. They continually serve ginger tea in cutesy vintage mismatching cups.

We split a few dishes; S-I-L eggs, Chili Salt Tofu, Hainanese Chicken and Laksa. While I'd forego the Chicken, it was pretty flat-line; chicken with an assembly line of sauces of your picking, the S-I-L eggs are a must try as everyone else has pointed out. The deep fried, soft boiled eggs come in pairs of two on a bed of unbelievable tamarind-chili jam. They should jar that shit and sell it on the side. The tofu is deep fried and pretty decent, though the accompanying tamarind chutney was... Let's just say I'll write a love note to it later. It was perfectly fresh, tangy and pigmented.

The service was really fantastic. Our waiter was very enthusiastic and patient for a tiny yet busy restaurant.

100% Korean Restaurant

100% Korean is the type of restaurant that I wished I liked. The service was great, the food - not so much. I ordered the tofu soup for lunch, which had seafood and was really very bland though I requested spicy. The tofu was watery and sparse.

The meal comes with 6 different types of banchan; Niboshi, bean sprouts, kimchi, fried tofu, some fried meat I didn't touch, and cucumbers.

I need to mention that this was the first Asian restaurant I've visited that was thoroughly upfront with the proper receipt with taxes and gst number all accounted for. This is what proper service looks like.

CIBC is finally getting some humane hours. I do some personal and business banking at this branch and it's always tough to try and make it during their hours. So I'm thrilled that they're extending to TD bank-esque and this finally means I no longer have to scramble to make it during the day.
Service is generally pleasing aside from the rude FA who occupied the office beside the CSR section. They also have a pleasant woman at the welcome desk.

I got a haircut with Yuka several weeks ago, though the process was pretty short for the whole wash, cut and style she was a pro.

Right away she pointed out that my hair was texturized and asked if I wanted it repeated. She then proceeded to give me a few pointers for shortening the blow dry process at home. This was super useful, as I'm trying to reduce the damage made on my hair on a regular basis. While I was pretty happy about my haircut, I'm wondering if the visit is worth repeating, compared to some other salons (see: Chura).

I loved that they are environmentally friendly through their sourcing of energy for water and electricity and that they use paraben-free hair products.

Roots Yoga Studio

We took a 'Yoga for Runners' class today as part of a UYE. The thing about Roots is the owners run Roots store below as well. Not sure what this does to the studio and I didn't see anyone touting goods for the store, offering discounts or anything, -so don't worry about getting solicited.

The class wasn't heated, though it got incredibly sweaty with all the vinyasas. We used lots of props and our many positions weren't held for very long (about 5 breaths each). Our instructor was incredibly knowledgeable about the positions and the slight modifications in angles. I appreciated all the little instructions informing me where the stretch was supposed occur, where to relax and where to strengthen.

Also, they have compostable disposable cups and a water bottle fountain. The tiny communal changeroom is decent, however if the door goes flying open as people come and go, you might be left flashing someone, this one goes particularly for men, as it's exactly adjacent to the practice room door.

3.5 stars.

Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu

Another Buk Chang, another delicious Soon Tofu. We ventured in here after a yoga class and request my usual vegetable soon tofu, spice level: Medium. Everything was delicious and as per BCD tradition, the banchan consisted of kimchi, bean sprouts, spices Asian radish and saucy soybeans.

One of the waiters was much more perceptive and courteous than the other, but the overall experience was great. I still feel like House of Soon or Owl of Minerva whip up a better Soon Tofu as the BCD version is slightly too watery and maybe the tofu is not as silky smooth, but the vegetables in this one make me feel a little healthier.

Indian Spice Kitchen

Categories: Indian, Vegetarian
Neighbourhood: Scarborough

Indian Spice Kitchen is pretty cool. Located in a weird area, away from solid restaurants, and I don't count the Bombay Palace as 'decent'.  The system is mainly buffet during lunch and everything is offered in relatively smaller portions at the buffet table and frequently refreshed.

They have an appetizing assortment of salads and DIY Chaat, about eight to ten vegetarian mains and about six to ten meat options. They also have a well-used tandoor.

I would give this place 4 stars but many of the mains were very hot and spicy. Obviously, I should be well-prepared bearing the name, but heartburn after a meal is not really my thing.
