This Friday night a severe assault was committed on a good friend of mine, by patrons of Mecury on 17th Avenue. And my friend is a girl. The attackers were males. Her face has been completely mangled and she required hospitalization and may require plastic surgury.
The Calgary Police Service did NOTHING. They didn't pull security footage, they didn't interview or reprimand the staff for allowing this carnage to take place and they offered her NO alternative means for her to seek justice. Additionally, the officers attending her recommended that she didn't go to the hospital.
The Calgary Police Service, despite its over-inflated budget and army of new recruits, is a complete sham, a shame to law enforcement in freedom loving countries everywhere. By being made to coercively pay for this outright useless and ineffective service, the taxpayers of Calgary and of Canada are being robbed. THAT is criminal.
SHAME on the Calgary Police Department.
The Calgary Police Service is among the best in the country, with the best training, some of the best staff, the best technology, and the best protocols. And they are numerous in Calgary, effectively combating crime and usually, the crimes that matter.
However, I have found that the Calgary Police are interested in enforcing anti-criminal legislation, but uninterested in protecting the private property rights of individuals living in our city. Property offense usually goes unsolved or unnoticed by the Calgary Police.
On one occasion, they refused to investigate an individual that had unjustly and fraudulently acquired some of my property. Fraud is a federal crime in Canada and Calgary Police rendered me no assistance.
Suffice to say, private protection is much more effective than public police services. And the Calgary Police Service is no exception.
At least, the indie scene in Calgary can come out of hibernation. With all the scenester rags in town like BeatRoute, FFWD, Swerve, and everything else, this publication is going to be a total refreshment.
Featuring everything indie in this city: music, art, fashion, film...and all of it.
This is Calgary's best place to find out what's up in the city.
Yeah, the cover is a little pricey. But the Opus is pretty cool. Instead of small, I'd call the place cozy. Atmospheric lighting lend to the ambient mood that is supported by the delicious array of house and deep-house DJs that pour soul into the mixboard each weekend. Pretty girls and clean boys even have room to dance.
Booths, tables, and even a fairly comfortable VIP area can be found around their bar that takes up nearly the entire west wall of the joint. The staff are as friendly as the prices are high.
But the vibe is usually low-key and is definitely conducive to a romantic conversation and late-night flirting. I mainly go here, because I know one of the place's promoters. But he does have talent at a majority of his shows. According, I can dig the Opus if the mood is right.
The Tropicana used to have a reputation as being a biker bar. However, having been there, it definitely doesn't seem like one. The bar staff are quick and friendly.
They serve a variety of finger food and pub favourites -- and, of course, they also serve up a great deal of rock and roll on the weekends. Friday and Saturday night, they amp up the sound system and let local indie acts take over the stage.
The crowd here is younger, and they definitely appreciate their music. When more popular bands performs, the entire bar hits the dance floor.

They offer a small convenient store in the lobby that is stocked with all the latest junk food. We made use of it several times during our stay. They are in a great location as well with the Rose & Crown pub just below for drinks and for an alternative to their restaurant.
My only complaint was the breakfast. I found it mealy and dull. If they got better kitchen staff, I would have given them five stars.
