The Sutton Place Hotel

The Sutton Place is an elegant hotel. I really enjoyed my stay here. The rooms are luxurious, the beds comfortable and the TVs are all modern. We had an excellent view from our room as well. The staff were definitely very friendly as well and the service they offered was exemplary. The rooftop pool is one of the coolest aspects of the hotel. We expected it to be full of kids and families like most hotel pools, but were pleasantly surprised to find it vacant. It was almost like having our own private pool. The hot tub was a nice feature as well.

They offer a small convenient store in the lobby that is stocked with all the latest junk food. We made use of it several times during our stay. They are in a great location as well with the Rose & Crown pub just below for drinks and for an alternative to their restaurant.

My only complaint was the breakfast. I found it mealy and dull. If they got better kitchen staff, I would have given them five stars.

Surahi Restaurant

What a wonderful hidden gem. Living in south Calgary makes finding a decent Indian restaurant difficult. But now that I've found Surahi, I'm totally set.

We ordered around 5pm for pick-up. Despite fighting rish-hour traffic, I made it there in twenty minutes and our order was already ready. The place is beautiful on the inside -- clean, authentic and polished. The place is spacious. And despite being tucked away behind MacLeod Trail near the Co-Op and a Wendy's Restaurant, it boasts a fairly central location. It might be hidden, but it's tremendously easy to get to.

The food was nice and hot when we got home. We ordered lamb vindaloo, chicken korma, a tandori mixed grill, basmati rice and garlic naan bread. The bread was fresh, supple and perfectly seasoned. I ate waaaay too much of it. The vindaloo was perfectly spiced, not too hot but not weak and sissy either -- just the right amount of heat. It offered a generous helping of lamb bits as well, cooked to perfection. I'm not often into lamb, but it was tender and juicy and mixed well with the spicy curry it comes in. A good vindaloo is a beautiful thing; last night, I found it.

The chicken korma was delicious as well. Rich flavour and the perfect texture. The chicken was cooked properly and complimented the fine curry. I really enjoyed the mixed grill. The chicken, prawns and lamb all tasted wonderful.

The price is incredible. The whole meal cost $66 and could have easily fed five people. I'll be eating Indian leftovers for days. And when the time comes again to treat myself to the best Indian food in the city, I'll be ripping over to Surahi for more spicy goodness.

Homes by Avi

Chances are, the only time you've ever heard of this crap company was when you were subjected to their insulting, annoying, over-played and obnoxious commercial on 90.3 Amp Radio and had sudden urges to kill yourself. Well, not only do they think you're a moron, they think the only way they can relate to their customers is by hiring one of the worst advertising agencies in the country to agrivate you into submission.

Terry O'Riley from the Age of Persuasion on CBC has suggested that Canadian consumers should put pressure on businesses to come up with engaging, clever advertisements by not doing business with companies who use annoying and abraisive ads. And if their homes are anything like their awful radio commercial, they'll fall down or explode at the slightest provocation.

Spend your money elsewhere and don't EVER get ripped off by purchasing any "Home By Avi". Anyone that does is an outright idiot and deserves to have their poorly built and obnoxiously advertised home fall down around their ears. Besides, if you decide to live in the slums known as Prospect Ridge, you might want to look into moving to North Korea -- conditions are more favourable.

IC Artist Agency

IC Artist Agency is probably one of the biggest scams I've ever come across online. In my opinion, the owner seems like a devious crook and fraudster who preys upon the hopes and dreams of young, naive musicians. It wouldn't surprise me if someone told me that she likes to eat babies and kill kittens and puppy dogs too.

Basically, Jennifer (the mastermind behind this ridiculous scam) rips off struggling artists by having them pay her $5 to submit their material to her through Reverbnation and Sonicbids in the hopes that their band will be offered the "opportunity" to join Jennifer's roster of crappy insignificant indie bands.

Of course, it's obvious that Jennifer doesn't really even need to book shows if she didn't want to. In an email I received from Jennifer, she claimed that she receives 30 submissions per day. At $5 per submission, she would make over $35,000 per year just by getting bands to pay her to listen to their music. Kinda sounds like something a thief would do right? The only difference is that a thief wouldn't try to make you believe that you'll benefit from him taking your money. I wouldn't be surprised if Jennifer makes bootleg CDs from all the music she receives and has child labourers sell them in a Wal-Mart parking lot for $10 a throw.

The third suggestion when you type in IC Artist Agency in Google is SCAM!

Be careful. There are plenty of scams like this out there. NO AGENT IN THE WORLD WOULD EVER CHARGE YOU SUBMIT YOUR MUSIC TO THEM! ANYONE THAT DOES IS A SCAM ARTIST, A CROOK AND A LIAR!

I think people should submit letters the IRS to have her audited. Or maybe have her investigated by the Federal Trade Commission. Crooks like Jennifer belong in prison.

I filed yet another formal complaint again the Calgary Police Service today. Will the madness ever end?

I attempted posting what happened here, but Yelp won't allow reviews of longer than 5000 characters. Accordingly, they don't get my 12334 characters of content for their site. Oooooooooooh -- too bad, so sad.

This Friday night a severe assault was committed on a good friend of mine, by patrons of Mecury on 17th Avenue. And my friend is a girl. The attackers were males. Her face has been completely mangled and she required hospitalization and may require plastic surgury.

The Calgary Police Service did NOTHING. They didn't pull security footage, they didn't interview or reprimand the staff for allowing this carnage to take place and they offered her NO alternative means for her to seek justice. Additionally, the officers attending her recommended that she didn't go to the hospital.

The Calgary Police Service, despite its over-inflated budget and army of new recruits, is a complete sham, a shame to law enforcement in freedom loving countries everywhere. By being made to coercively pay for this outright useless and ineffective service, the taxpayers of Calgary and of Canada are being robbed. THAT is criminal.

SHAME on the Calgary Police Department.

The Calgary Police Service is among the best in the country, with the best training, some of the best staff, the best technology, and the best protocols. And they are numerous in Calgary, effectively combating crime and usually, the crimes that matter.

However, I have found that the Calgary Police are interested in enforcing anti-criminal legislation, but uninterested in protecting the private property rights of individuals living in our city. Property offense usually goes unsolved or unnoticed by the Calgary Police.

On one occasion, they refused to investigate an individual that had unjustly and fraudulently acquired some of my property. Fraud is a federal crime in Canada and Calgary Police rendered me no assistance.

Suffice to say, private protection is much more effective than public police services. And the Calgary Police Service is no exception.

At least, the indie scene in Calgary can come out of hibernation. With all the scenester rags in town like BeatRoute, FFWD, Swerve, and everything else, this publication is going to be a total refreshment.

Featuring everything indie in this city: music, art, fashion, film...and all of it.

This is Calgary's best place to find out what's up in the city.

Opus On 8th

Update - 3/1/2009
Opus is a total piece of s**t. I was just there with a party of 40 and they turned us all away because I was wearing army fatigues.

What a bunch of morons.

The place is obviously more interested in having rich old sausage in their bar than attractive young men (not to mention the 20-odd girls we were with).

If you like lots of dick, bouncers that think they're way cooler than they really are,  ridiculously over-priced drinks, and a bar with the worst DJs in Calgary, go to Opus.

What a joke.
I'd rather die than go there ever again.
If they won't let in a guy with army fatigues, they must not respect or give a damn about Canadian heroes dying overseas to secure their freedom.

Screw Opus On Eighth and the unpatriotic assholes that run the place. I'd rather party at Safeway than party in this Canadian bar that hates Canada.

Yeah, the cover is a little pricey. But the Opus is pretty cool. Instead of small, I'd call the place cozy. Atmospheric lighting lend to the ambient mood that is supported by the delicious array of house and deep-house DJs that pour soul into the mixboard each weekend. Pretty girls and clean boys even have room to dance.

Booths, tables, and even a fairly comfortable VIP area can be found around their bar that takes up nearly the entire west wall of the joint. The staff are as friendly as the prices are high.

But the vibe is usually low-key and is definitely conducive to a romantic conversation and late-night flirting. I mainly go here, because I know one of the place's promoters. But he does have talent at a majority of his shows. According, I can dig the Opus if the mood is right.

Tropicana Rock'n'Roll Bar

Update - 2/27/2009
Well, at first I was a little choked at the Tropicana. I have played here as a musician numerous times and experience some problems with payment.

But I'm happy to report that the Tropicana has made everything right. Not only that, they've renovated the place and have added a ton of booths, comfortable seating, better lighting, and a bunch of new flatpanel monitors.

And believe it or not, I never thought that it sounded good in Trop. The room is a weird shape. But after playing there again last night, I think it actually sounds all right.

The Tropicana used to have a reputation as being a biker bar. However, having been there, it definitely doesn't seem like one. The bar staff are quick and friendly.

They serve a variety of finger food and pub favourites -- and, of course, they also serve up a great deal of rock and roll on the weekends. Friday and Saturday night, they amp up the sound system and let local indie acts take over the stage.

The crowd here is younger, and they definitely appreciate their music. When more popular bands performs, the entire bar hits the dance floor.

The Brickyard

The Brickyard took up residence and basically picked up where the Crazy Horse Saloon left off. The place has only be open for a few weeks. Thankfully, I had to the opportunity to be one of the first musicians on their stage.

The place is a brilliant live music venue with an ample stage, great sound, fast and friendly service, cool lighting and a real rock and roll atmosphere. Outside, along 10th Avenue where the hipsters are usually filing down to the HiFi, the entrance to the new Brickyard surely overshadows everything else. They've got two huge flatpanel monitors outside that show you the action from the stage within.

This place is really really cool. Trust me. Check it out.
