Bakerbots Baking

An absolutely phenomenal little neighbourhood bakery. Everything looks and tastes absolutely amazing. I'm typically extremely critical of bakeries and still Bakerbots is one of the few that managed to meet and exceed my expectations.

The big draw at Bakerbots are the ice cream sandwiches. You choose from a delicious selection of chewy cookies--chocolate, blueberry, ginger, peanut butter and blueberry when I was there--and they load it up with ice cream from one of Toronto's best ice cream shops:  Ed's Real Scoop. They even let you choose multiple flavours of ice cream for your sandwich. These things are huge so I recommend getting a half sandwich ($3.50).

While the ice cream sandwiches are phenomenal, the pie was the real gem here. First, let me note that I consider myself a serious pie connoisseur. Some may sing the praises of the likes of The Pie Shack  or Wanda's, but these people simple don't know a thing about good pie. Until recently I just accepted the fact that Toronto pie meant mediocre pie. Thankfully this is no longer the case.

The slice of peach pie I had at Bakerbots' blew me away. Both the crust and the filling were absolutely flawless. Easily the best store made pie I've ever had and I've had a hell of a lot!

A clean, no frills motel just off the interstate. You won't get a pool or a bunch of bathing products, but as a result the prices are among the lowest in town; we paid $68. Great option if you just need to crash for the night. They also have free wireless.

Absolutely the WORST Mexican restaurant that I've even been to in Toronto. Really nothing positive to say here. The food is bland, stale, and obviously reheated. Avoid it.

Terminal Barber Shop

A reliable, classic old school barber shop. Cuts are quick, reasonably cheap ($22), and reliably good. It has a nice, warm, old fashioned feel inside. They even finish off your sideburns and neck with a straight razor. Probably not the place to go if you're looking for the latest trend but if you just want a good, basic cut check Terminal Barber out.

Restaurant Zen

Zen is an overpriced and mediocre quality vegan Asian fusion restaurant. It looks super nice inside and the waiter was prompt and very helpful. This is actually part of a chain and I've visited other locations in Toronto and Guelph. Unfortunately the menu here is much more limited and the prices much higher.

The vegetables and mushrooms on chow mein ($12) had lots of vegetables and the sauce was decent if a little bland. The sushi combo we ordered ($16) was a huge let down. It consisted of a single small spring roll and about 8 pieces of unimpressive sushi. Huge ripoff.

This place has lots of potential but I wouldn't come back here unless the menu was seriously improved and prices lowered.

Casse-Crepe Breton

Casse-Crepe Breton appears to be one of the most popular crepe places in Quebec. Just about all the guidebooks list it as a go to spot. So, we dutifully stopped in on our trip to Quebec. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype.

The crepes are average at best and the selection of fillings is decent but nothing special. The have both sweet and savoury crepes starting at about $5.

On the up side, the ambiance is nice, the service is friendly and quick, and the prices are good considering the location in the heart of Old Quebec. The crepes are OK but I'm sure there's better places in Quebec.

Chez Ashton

A 24h hour Chez Ashton. Probably the greatest invention in the world. It could only be improved if it was in Toronto or if I lived in Quebec.

Poutine is well known as the best post drinking food in existence. And, Ashton serves up one of the best poutines out there. So, next time you're in Quebec and you stumble out of a bar at 3am, get your ass down here for some late night poutine action. You won't regret it.

Chez Ashton served up one of the best poutines I've ever had and I've had a lot. As I see it poutine is meant to be simple and uncomplicated. The thought of $20 poutine topped with fois gras makes me want to cry. It's a travesty. If your poutine philosophy is the same as mine, Chez Ashton is for you.

You come here for the basics: super fresh and squeaky cheese curds, proper poutine gravy, and fresh cut fries that don't get soggy. The largest size, Régulier, comes out to about $9 with tax and is huge.

No trip to Quebec is complete without a visit (or 5 if you're me) to Chez Ashton.

Stitch It

A reliable spot for simple alterations. You can probably find a cheaper place to get alterations done but Stitch It is convenient and quick. They're in Stone Road Mall and they usually turn stuff around within the same day or the next day.

I've never had anything complicated done here but I had pants hemmed and a shirt taken in and I was happy with quality of both.

Sound Academy

Another Sound Academy hater here. I've twice made the mistake of seeing a show here. I knew what I was in for but I really wanted to see the show so I went anyway. That's not going to happen again. I've now banned Sound Academy altogether regardless of who plays there.

Number one issue is the location. It's in the middle of nowhere and, while TTC accessible, it certainly isn't convenient. My second major issue is the layout. It's basically like watching a show in a hallway.; it's long and narrow and it's hard to get a decent view of the stage.

Considering NO ONE likes this place I can't figure out why bands still book shows here.
