If you've been to other hotel casino buffets especially the ones in Las Vegas then you know you've experienced better in terms of quality and depth of selection.
I used to frequent at Wynn's THE BUFFET and with both hotels having the same name, I can't help compare and reminisce at the same time. But I shouldn't because River Rock's offering is no comparison with Wynn's in terms of quality and depth of selection.
I've been here twice this week - their New Year's Eve "Around the World Buffet" @ $39.95 and then two days later for their regular lunch buffet @ $16.95.
If you can't get a table when they open their doors, it can be a bit of a wait depending on the size of your party.
It's really just typical buffet offering with four basic sections - salad bar, appie and entree bar, drinks, and dessert.
The line for the main entree can get ridiculously long and that says a lot with regards to the size of the dining section versus the available food. It doesn't help that the food are all crammed in one area versus arranged around the dining perimeter to alleviate congestion from hungry patrons who's sole mission is to get their money's worth.
For the special NYE expensive pricing, they had two more sections to host the sauteed shrimps and sushi selection as well as a carving station for the roast pig, BBQ duck and prime rib. But really, how many dinner buffets have we all gone to that didn't have these selections?
I particularly enjoyed the Chinese food items the most, but then I realised if I was in Richmond already then I could have enjoyed a better quality meal and cooked to order with the money I paid.
For the dessert you have your typical cakes, flans, pastries, and fruits. The highlight I would believe is the chocolate fountain which I initially dismissed to be typical of wedding banquets and children's birthday parties, but the chocolate turned out much better and it's taste reminded me of melted Toblerone. But where was the ice cream bar? Or the crepe and flambe station typical of casino buffets?
Service for dinner was a flawless attentive service and constant offering for drinks and refills. For lunch, the waitress was barely there that I had to flag her down near the end of my meal just to have some tea. Drinks were never offered nor refilled. I grabbed my own at the bar.
Overall if you must go it's because you stay at the hotel. But then again the Canada Line is just steps away to make you experience a more authentic around the world cuisine from Richmond to Vancouver. This isn't your casino buffet with a penchant for flair and extravagant ingredients. But you knew that when you were gambling. The house always wins.

Friendly people with great food and great service. The main attraction which of course are the varieties of empanadas some filled with organic ingredients such as corn or the more expensive ones such as wild salmon.
If I need something more fulfilling than a samosa, but not as big as a calzone, I reach for an empanadas. For $3.95, it's a meal replacement in itself.
Talk to the guys behind the counter and they will gladly help you out with any questions you may have and even provide a sample to try.
They offer it in ready-to-eat hot and toasted or if you plan on getting a couple for the next day or a party, they also have the cold ones so you can heat them up yourself and they will be as fresh-tasting as the toasted ones like you just got them straight from the store.
Kudos to the owner. I don't mind it being Off-Davie. It keeps the prices low and the quality ingredients high. This place has potential. I can't wait to see what other filling he can concoct next.
