Battista's Calzones

Wow. I heard about this place on CBC radio a few months back and knew I had to check it out. When I did I ended up going back 3 more times over the next 10 days. This is exactly the kind of place I love. The staff are very friendly and polite, this stands out in a town with legendarily bad service. The building and interior are cozy and well kept.

I can't think of a place that does their thing as well as Battista's. The menu is simple so as to avoid "analysis paralysis" but varied enough to satisfy a range of cravings. My personal favorite is the Mamma Mia meatball calzone but there seems to be a consensus growing around the strawberry, coconut, nutella offering.

A very unique place on the Edmonton food scene that you should definitely check out.

My current go-to sushi place.

Truth be told, I'm not an expert on sushi - I'm a recent convert and man do I like it. The decor is all done in wood and looks really cool - it is a cozy place and feels really alive when it is full (which is often).

Miso soup is hearty and full of goodies - you can tell this soup is done right by the tingly warm sensation you get on your first sip. Their tempura is crispy and just right. They also have a big selection of appetizers - they like to bring out free ones now and then which is nice.

Their nigiri is well sized - for 6 pieces it usually works out around $12-16.

A humble place - like most good donair shops. Has a big menu, though I've only had the felafel donair and beef donairs. They cook it in the typical way; cut it off the spit, fry it up. The pita gets a steam as well. The meat is well spiced and I like that they usually give you a little sample before they wrap it up. There is a decent selection of toppings and a few options for sauce, though you should always go with sweet sauce.

They are open late on weekends which is great for late night munchies.

Great food with lots of German inspiration on the menu (which makes sense having K&K across the way and being right in the middle of the old German neighborhood in Ritchie). Chill atmosphere and friendly staff, very eclectic crowd and staff. Good selection of beer with Alley Kat and Big Rock.

The omelets are nice and big and very hearty. The burger with red pepper and brie was outstanding and highly recommended. The homemade ketchup is mildly spiced and chutney like, nice change from sugary tomato paste.

All-in-all a very unique place and one of my new favorites.

Breakfast menu goes all day on Sundays.

Fast service. Food was just okay and definitely not the best in the city. I would like to try some of the items off the Cantonese menu so I guess I'll have to bring a translator next time.

if you are looking for a place to do designer drugs (vitamins? need vitamins?) and hang out with generally creepy folks this is the place for you!  that really is not my scene and i felt seriously uncomfortable the few times ive been here - and im a big guy.

if you really love dancing to electronic music i can see the appeal, but like i said - this is not the kind place you just go to chill.  you need to be up on something or out on the floor dancing with the 4-foot-tall asian chick wearing pink bunny ears (while hoping her gangster-looking bf doesnt get too agro on the coke he snorted in the bathroom with no doors).

my recollection is that they only serve red bull and bottled water.

Art Gallery of Alberta

i had only been in the old brutalist art gallery a few times before it got knocked down and to be honest i kinda liked it.

it's okay though because the new AGA is awesome.  the caliber of shows attracted to this space is fantastic.  to be able to see burtysnky, warhol, matisse or degas along with much of the canadian art canon in my hometown is something that i really cherish.  my favorite experience at the gallery so far has been the Cardiff/Miller installations.

this is a very high end gallery in terms of the quality of the actual space and many of the exhibitions that have been featured so far.

Hub Mall

while the recent renovations are most unfortunate, HUB is an architecturally significant building/space.  it is a unique place - essentially an enclosed pedestrian street (inspired by the old Parisian arcades).  ive never been in one of the suites but i cant imagine it being too fun to live above a bunch of fast food restaurants.

HUB is a great place to grab a coffee with classmates during a break, to sit and enjoy a poutine as you watch what feels like the whole campus go whirring by or to just walk the length of as you avoid the cold weather on your way to the LRT.

in terms of on campus atmosphere, i much prefer it to SUB - which feels like a high school cafeteria (no doubt due to its proximity to Lister), full of obnoxious jocks shouting at each other across tables.

The really great thing about this place is the fact it is fully licensed. You'll never have a meal interrupted by a crying child here.

Drinks are a little expensive here.

Ive never been to nola so I can't compare but the red beans and rice are fantastic - make sure you get the andoulli sausage.

Cozy atmosphere. Nice breakfast selection with some interesting choices.  Pumpernickel bagel was very tasty.  I don't mind waiting for food but it sucks having to wait for water or tea.
