Holy Smoke BBQ

My tastebuds are in love. My husband and I went here on the recommendation of a friend, and were NOT disappointed. We usually stop by every Sunday for lunch as well. Cheap, fast and oh so delicious.

The selection of sauces is incredible and everything we've had there has not disappointed. My husband claims that he's done "trying" the sauces now and that he'll stick with [insert 5 different types here]. I like the House sauce the best, but perhaps because I'm not so adventurous and haven't actually tried the other ones.

I always get the Chickenwich, but Mr has tried a bunch of things and is never disappointed. Now it's where we take people from out of town... and then where they request to go when they're back in town. Basically we're ensuring the owner can finally put in that pool.

Upon re-reading my review, I'd like to summarize by saying "we were not disappointed"

Ristorante Pulcinella

Categories: Italian, Pizza

3.0 star rating

Wow, everyone on Yelp either loves Pulcinella or will NEVER go back there! I guess that's a strategy to keep new customers coming? To try their luck?

This restaurant has a special place in my heart, as I went there on my husband and I's first date, and we went there the night he proposed. He didn't propose in the restaurant, but the servers helped him with a small portion of it. That's a story for another time, and probably another medium unless I can review his marriage proposal on here.

BUT, I will say that I don't really love the food there. We went twice (the two occasions listed above) and I made sure to tell him that I wasn't really interested in going there on every special occasion because I didn't really love the food.

I see what everyone means about the crust and the sogginess. I can't speak to how it's served in Italy, so I'm not sure if it's authentic. We probably won't go back there for a long time, it is indeed pretty spendy and it doesn't really blow you away.

Chinese Cultural Centre Restaurant

We went for "Chinese Hot Pot," which is essentially fondue but with flavored broth instead of oil.

I'll tell you, if you're not used to being the minority in Calgary, go here for a healthy dose of minority report! It was nice to be that way for a change!

The food was good, the broths were good, and eating takes a looooong time as you're cooking it all in small portions. The hot pot "all you can eat" was pretty pricy for us at $25, so make sure you're good and hungry, or that it's a special occasion, before going. I see another review says $18. Perhaps we had a higher price because it was New Year's Eve.

We got a special tour and orientation though, as we clearly had no idea what we were doing. Fun experience all around!

Loose Moose Theatre Company

Update - 12/14/2011
Oh boy! We won tickets on Twitter to go to their annual Christmas production, a Chrismoose Carol. I'd never been to it, nor ever heard of it, but it got me in the Christmas spirit almost more than anything!

5-6 actors put on a version of a Christmas Carol (apparently in previous years they have done Westerns and various genres). It was terribly low-budget, hilariously improv'd, ridiculously absurd, and very very funny. It's a treat to go to a Christmas production that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Guys on bungee cords and references to Calgary neighbourhoods as though they are part of 19th century London? What else would you expect from the Loose Moose?!

I love this place. Improv every single Friday at a reasonable price.

That's really all I have to say about it. Great Friday night activity to end the work week.

Do yourself a favor and go. And take me with you.

I'm with Danelle W on this one. Everything was great (and really, I don't have much more to add) but the space might have been a bit small. Of course that encourages mingling, but it's great to have a bit more room to move.

And loved the "Not so blue Monday" drink!

Higher Ground

I think, if I owned a coffee shop, that I would put electrical outlets every metre along the wall. Higher Ground could do with a few more. When the bar is full, there are only a few in the place.

If you get in here early enough in the evening (or late enough...), you'll find a lovely place to sit and drink/munch your faves from behind the counter. I've been here a few times (my husband and I even wrote our vows here because we didn't have interwebs at either of our houses!)

Anyway, pretty standard coffee shop - you won't be disappointed, but if you're just there on a regular night, you're not going to be carefully crafting a letter to the president about your experience.

If you live nearby, definitely make it a regular occurrence.

Sentry Box

I nearly squeaked a bit when I heard about the Sentry Box.

EVERY game in print? EVERY? I didn't believe it. I'd looked at the standard 'games' places for Ticket to Ride for my husband and I... with no success. That's when I knew. I knew it was time for my first trip to the Sentry Box.

Now, fair warning, when you walk in you'll have to make your way through a hoard of people who are part of games meetup groups. Don't be intimidated though - just down those stairs is the answer to every single awkward dinner conversation!

We found Ticket to Ride (3 versions) no problem, and had to fight temptation to buy everything in the store.

If you're looking for a game and don't know where to find it, go here.

The Yardhouse Restaurant

The Yardhouse probably won't dissapoint. Unless you're looking for yam fries.

I've actually never been to either location, and we ended up here for a drink because Higher Ground was packed and had a concert going on or something.

They had Malbec and Pinot Grigio on special for $5, so I got that. I think their beer selection could probably be stepped up a bit - both guys I was with mentioned that they weren't able to find the beer they wanted, and had to settle for an 'ol faithful.

Overall, clean, bright, friendly service, and very good Root Chips, which we ordered because they didn't have yam fries. A great neighbourhood pub.

OEB Breakfast Co

Great decor, great food,  nice servers, a little pricey.

I recognize that a lot of their food is grain fed, free range, locally grown, and can read you a bed time story if you ask it, but it's still expensive.

I had a hamburger and my husband had something that looked like steak, but I actually wasn't paying attention to what he was eating because I was too hungry, and caught up in the story my burger was telling me about that time it was in the war.

Good to check out, but not on my list of cheap eats, that's for sure. The decor is VERY well done.

Also, don't absentmindedly order an orange juice when you sit down, because you'll be emptying your pockets of a cool $4.60 - twenty cents less than a full smoothie.

Juliet's Castle Sports Lounge

Category: Sports Bars

3.0 star rating

Well we went here and didn't get shot, so I see it as a victory.

My husband likes wings. I like not spending lots of money, so I thought "let's go to the dingiest hole in the wall we can find." Enter Juliet's Castle. Although, in its defense, it wasn't AS dingy as I wanted, but then I also DID feel like I was going to get shot outside, so I guess it balances out.

The waitress was nice and super friendly, and the wings were good. Not the 'seasoned' ones though - they tasted like nothing.

In summary, it's close enough to home and the wings and service were good. It's more than likely that I'll grab my bulletproof jacket and go back.
