What? Gluten free and hormone free sausages?! Wow, just gimme a lighter and I'll smoke one up right now.
Don't ever walk through the market hungry, I tell ya.
Locals all have their favourite shops they like to hit up, so just follow the flow and you won't fall into any tourist traps. Nasty things, those traps, they'll put runs in your stockings.
Great customer service, willing to answer your questions and not hurry you along for the next customer.

Habitat Island

With the development of the Olympic Village, earth was moved and living things were uprooted. After the dust settled, this area known as Habitat Island on the south east end of False Creek was filled in and formed with the consultation of local environmental groups. Soil was replaced, and more than 200 trees, plants, grasses and flowers were replanted in this area by the Vancouver Parks Board. It's a lovely place to take a walk and some pictures of the things that call this little oasis home. When the tide is low you can walk to the waters edge and see all the tiny creatures that normally live under the water. Logs line the edge so it's also a great place for a picnic or pleasant bicycle ride along the short path to the Island. We were surprised by the obvious care that was taken to restore these lands to a natural state.
The views all around this location promise to erase any stresses you arrived with and time magically disappears before you realize it has passed.

JJ Bean Coffee Roasters

We are regulars at this JJ's but I can never check in due to the new 'no wireless until after 5pm' rule. Our after noon coffee is never after 3pm.

Reasons we love this JJ's over all others;
1- Outdoor deck area is like someone's back yard, the bonus is part of the seating area can be enclosed, and there's a heat lamp!
2- The view of the mountains in the distance is insanely beautiful.
3- Indoor seating is like being in a cozy ski lodge, equipped with a fireplace!
4- Always friendly, never any barista-tude.
5- Proximity to the lovely & relaxing P&T gardens to walk around, drink coffee and zone out.
6- Of course the coffee is yummy! (Why else would we be here?)

Thank you JJ bean for providing this little oasis at Park & Tilford.

(At least a dozen visits to this location and I still love it the best!)

The perfect platform to plot our pleasure plans. (bet you can't say that three times, and fast.) We huddled on the comfy chairs, giddy with ideas about our trip next week.

The wood ceiling beams really give this JJ's a cozy ski lodge feeling. I just love it.

They should have turned on the fireplace today, it felt so like fall outside. As we sat and watched, the sun and the rain met and had a rainbow baby while we enjoyed our French Press coffee brewed to perfection.

At the Park & Tilford mall. This beautiful JJ Bean is one of the best cafe's to just sit and chill. Actually you can warm too 'cause there's a fireplace :-) For warmer weather they also have outside seating on a lovely patio!
I luv luv luv their hot chocolate. There are Pannini Sammies and yummy treats too.
This JJ's has wireless and a lot of comfy chairs to sit and read. They actually have a study room. Does it get any better than that?! -wait... it does. They are open 'till midnight ?! OMG.

Mmmm...! Best dark chocolate, flourless, non dairy cocoa cookie I've had in a while! Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. How did they do it?
Cute little country style fresh pastry shop in the heart of Steveston Village, or as it's known around there, "Storybrooke"
(Apparently they film the series  "Once Upon a Time" on the main street of the village there and change all the shop signs for the shoots.) I hear it's a bit confusing for people.

Another attraction to the Steveston area is this wide open waterfront park.
Take a long walk, stop for pictures of the wildflowers, have a picnic, fish from the shore, or like us suckers, bring your binoculars and look for the Sea Lions that are supposed to be on the S. Jetty only to learn upon arrival that they can only be viewed from a charter boat. -hah!
Lovely dog walking area and friendly peep's to chat with. Definite recommend!

Steveston Cannery Cafe

The prime 'old town' location and obvious untapped potential is the saving grace of this bright little cafe in the heart of the Steveston Village. For 16 years this owner and family operated business has been serving basic, old-school type dishes, including hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries and cafeteria style sammies made up to order. Breakfasts are also served.

Priced just right but somehow missing the mark for quality or any outstanding feature, sadly I can't see any draw for a return customer. With plenty of tourists to keep them in business, this may not be an economic issue but it's just a shame. It could be so much more.
Hardwood flooring and wooden beams, fresh paint on the walls, photographs of historic Steveston give the place some ambiance, but the plastic deck chairs cheapen the effect.

Outdoor seating is also available.

Next to walking through nearby Park & Tilford gardens, what could be more relaxing than pondering about planting your own garden?
Large assortment of flowering plants, trees, bushes, herbs, seeds, vegetables, potting soil and all other green-thumb necessary accoutrements.
Friendly, knowledgeable staff and a large parking lot.

We asked around the town for a local coffee roaster and we were directed here. A small owner operated shop selling some bulk foods, light lunches and yes, in house roasted coffee. They don't sell the beans and unfortunately what we drank wasn't a very good quality coffee, but they do indeed roast it in small batches. At first the owner was not very friendly but with some persuasion she warmed up to our family group. I would still return here over the chain coffee alternative across the way, there's always hope for improved quality on a 2nd visit. It's a cute shop, with inside seating for a rainy day and a table out front.

It's a quiet town, Horseshoe Bay, nice and relaxing.

Hands down my favourite shop in Gastown. Creepy goodness that astounds the imagination, then cuteness you could fill up a shoe box with. Gifts for the insane, like myself, unique gift cards for anyone, old photographs of people and places in frames or on post cards, or how about an anatomically correct hermaphrodite human organ model.  Uh-huh.
Actually, I think the place is haunted, too... just to add to the attraction.

Every time we take another walk along the False Creek Athletes Village area we find new things have popped up. This slow growing community already has such an awesome, relaxing vibe to it, making this an attractive place to bring out of town guests just to hang out.
The community center is a really nice, bright place to sit and chill for a bit or get involved in some fitness activities. There's a gymnasium in there, some clean bathrooms, and even a wi-fi signal & comfy seating for guests. Nice!
