Dr. Salvino reminds me of what a doctor should be like. Patient, Kind, a good listener, honest and knowledgeable with out a superior attitude or arrogance. I would gladly see this doc again if I had a choice. Unfortunately he is not taking on any new patients. I had begged pathetically to be seen and they were nice enough to comply. After seeing me the doctor referred me to an E.N.T specialist which is all I needed.

While at Dr Salvino's office, I couldn't help but notice the wall of paper files behind the desk, I asked how many doctors work from this office? She said just the one. My eyes bugged out like Arnold Schwarzenegger in total recall. I said 'there must be a thousand files behind you!' she said "it's more like five thousand, there's more in the other room".

Oh Canada, my home and native land..... what happened to your health care system? Where are all the doctors? What have you done?!

Update - 1/26/2012
This week we made our annual sojourn to the temple of Elysian, paid a respectable homage to the caffeine gods, drank our holy carbonated water and ate the wafer, er-- I mean the non gluten, non dairy Almond tea cake.

As usual it was all good including the counter help.
We even had a chat about the lovely, ornate hand grinders for sale and I made a little prayer for one (somewhere in my future).

We are ounce again absolved of our coffee sins!

It's been well over a year since my bean-dar spotted Elysian. After all this time, I FINALLY had the opportunity to check it out.
    My report:
It's everything I expected and more.

This cafe is a TEMPLE to coffee!!

Excellent coffee prep's and choices, well informed and helpful employees.
One who saw my disappointment over the lack of seating when the four of us arrived. Suddenly a table became available. She made it happen. I said to my friend, "do we have VIP stamped to our foreheads?"

One bonus star added for complimentary bubbly water served to customers while they wait for their orders.
One more for a well noted Wheat and Dairy free item in the showcase.

    LONG LIVE ELYSIAN!!!!
    Hip hip HAZZZAHH!

*My 800th review.... it seems fit that it should be for a cafe. I am after all, @beandar and I have to live up to the name :)

For about a month now I've been spying out this corner shop beside the bakery next to the park. I had peeked into the window and seen the Victoria Arduiro Espresso machine, all lit up with a come hither in her eye and with little fan fare, Renzo's Coffee has opened on Commercial Drive where the old Taylor shop used to be. In fact the very name is the same, and you will see Renzo hanging around too!

André is the proprietor of the shiny new shop that offers the Commercial Drive's iconic Continental Coffee roast, in keeping with the tradition of the true and trusted local Italian culture. This shop is bright with plenty of natural light, and an open floor plan that gives it a spacious feeling.

Plenty of seating, wireless, tasty coffee and some light nibbles just to wet our whistle for things to come.

Today we took our fabulous Saeco espresso machine in to see what's going on under the hood. I felt like it's my baby going in to the doctor for the first time.

Totally down to earth customer service guy Marco took it into the back and checked it out for us, (free of charge). Unfortunately we will need 150 in repair and replacement of the heating element.
Depressing only because we can't put any extra cash out for that right now. Hopefully 2012 will be good to us and we'll be back again soon and get this baby running.

Cool old shop, lot's of different espresso machines to check out and a droolicious selection of various accoutrements. Pretty much anything you might need. They have some repaired machines for sale and plenty of new ones.

Disclaimer; This is not a current review. Who could write a review with this kind of event fresh in their mind? I didn't think I would even write it but someone has to in the name of being helpful.

The people who will read this review are on their search of a place to bring friends and family together to celebrate the life of someone they have lost. It's a painful time and you want everything to go smoothly.
The folks at Simple Alternative were more than kind, they were real. They are very accommodating in every way possible. It's a tough circumstance for everyone so the last thing you need is any extra grief.

The rooms were perfect for the gatherings we had. Tables for food and flowers and a digital screen for sharing old photographs that make you both smile and cry, sometimes at the same time. This is an intimate, warm space.

They even let us into the kitchen, for private conversations. I'll never forget it.

I recommend this place for non denominational services.

I wish peace to anyone reading this.

What a sweet heart the owner is! It's just a tiny dusty old "convenience" store across from my place. I go there to pick up (forgotten) items from Donald's Market shopping trips.
He's even open on New Years Day ! What!? Yes, he's open, and there are flowers out front to be had too.

In all fairness this would be a two and a half star review.

This potentially cute, corner shop is a typical Vancouver neighbourhood convenience store with the oldskool sign, bars and too many adds on the windows, crooked floors and poor lighting. They carry all the basics with out over-charging you for your shopping list shortcomings.

The owner seems really nice, we've basically watched his kid growing up, from the vantage point of our balcony. There are always a variety of plants and flowers out front decorating the place but I really wish the building would be upgraded. I keep visualizing a small cafe inside with a nice bench out front
but for now, it is what it is, with some pretty strange people & things happening in the residences above the store. I'll keep dreaming of the improvement and maybe one day it will happen.

Same sassy service after all these years.

It's amazing how you can go to a shop a few times over the span of 10 years and find it exactly the same. Bitchy, self absorbed, rude staff who will scorn you for trying things on, follow you around and even mock you for asking questions or attempting friendly conversation. I watched in amazement as an old man tried on a few hats and requested help, she basically said;  "How can I help you --look around and choose one yourself!"

As for the merchandise, it's Hippy style garments, the usual overall selection you find so many places on the drive, however they do have a good selection of Djembe drums if you don't mind buying with out trying. God forbid you actually play them in the shop.

Wow, I really had a different idea of this place from reviews I'd read. My new impression based on an actual visit instead of a virtual view, has an emotion attached; jealousy.
Some one with a wonderful vision must have seen this corner convenience store (as I may have), and through dreamy eyes made their vision into a reality.

A cafe/gift/gourmet foods shop nestled into a residential area that somehow, like a magnet attracts people enough to have it's own energy about it. With just a couple of window seats to sit and savor a fresh pastry and drink something warm while catching up with friends or bicycle by on a warm day and stop in to pick up something from the outside baskets.
Awesome!
I wish I could transform my corner store into a place like this.
Maybe I need to dream more.

This brightly lit, clean, spacious Asian foods market has been by-passed far too long, mostly because it's just across from Donald's Market where I do most of my grocery shopping. But they do deserve a good mention. Reason being that the meats and vegetables look nice and fresh, there is lots of variety and the owner is friendly.
Unfortunately for me I'm unfamiliar with more than half the items are on the shelves!
On the outside tables there are various reasonably priced kitchen necessities and a few surprises too. I even found a cute pair of mini "Ugg"-like booties for a new member of the family :) So cute!

By the way, I'm not sure if they moved to Hastings or they have a second location (listed under Viet Thanh Market) in Cedar Cottage.

The owner is a Tea expert, he is patient and kind, lets you smell the fabulous Teas out of the large tins and it becomes a learning experience.

Save time when you shop at Donald's to stop at the Tea Counter and also check out the excellent accouterments like the really nice double walled cups. Great gift idea's and nicely packed sample packs.

I ran into Donald's to grab a few things real quick, when through my blurred tunnel vision I caught a quick glimpse of the newly opened Tea shop.

I whirled to a stop and decided to take a time out. I couldn't believe my eyes. I asked the guy at the lovely Tea counter; 'am I hallucinating?' he was so cute and patiently described the variety of teas they have available at this Express location. Donald's you are full of surprises! What a great addition to this busy corner and another reminder to take our time in life.

The only problems that I see are that shopping requires two hands, and that there is no where to sit. They need a bench or something.

Shop first, tea after, take your time. :)
