In March, I'm planning to go to rent a car from San Francisco and then go to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park.  Coming from Canada, I don't know much about tire chains.

I have a few questions.

1.  Do all the tires need a tire chain?  As in, do I need to get 2 or 4 tire chains in total?

2.  Is it easy to put on these chains for somebody who has never put them on before?

3.  What's the difference between tire chains and tire cables (in terms of easy of use, safety, and cost)?

4.  What are the chances that I'll probably need to use tire chains in these places?

Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me!

I would probably recommend some internet research as I'm definitely not the best expert on this. However, I think (emphasis on think):

    - you only use 2 chains/cables if you have a two-wheel drive car
    - you can pay someone to help you put chains on at the side of the road but they are not too tough
    - I think most people use cables now
    - If there is a lot of snow, especially in Lake Tahoe, they will likely require chains...

I bet the car rental company might be able to help you out?
