Their argument is that it increases tax revenues.  I wonder how that works when you factor in health care costs?  Hm......

   The Russian Health Care system has been in rapid decay since the fall of the Soviet Union, to the point where it's become obselete, ineffective and inadequately-supplied.  There are a number of proposed Health Care Reforms in the country currently, and perhaps this is part of the intense push for taxes as a short-term solution to fund a problem that's reached a critical point.  Health Care in Russia is nothing like the system that we have here, and by comparison (despite the long wait-times) we have it pretty good.

   I heard this before in relation to smoking and it is pretty interesting actually. There was modelling done where they took into account a large range of factors from costs of healthcare etc to revenue from taxes etc and one group came up with a result that basically said that if more people smoked it would actually cost the government less money. People die earlier which costs the government less and the increased costs of healthcare would be offset by the increase in tax revenue. There were more factors as well which I can't remember offhand but it does ignore the point that you should perhaps care about the welbeing of your citizens of course.

   Reading about people's drunken adventures always makes me want to run out the door and  visit the establishment they've ranted about.  Even if it makes no sense what they are saying, I just have this urge to recreate their debauchery and sample for myself some of the things they've consumed.  Poor choices and affected judgment be damned - gimme some of what they had!
   
   I say YES to drinking and smoking more!  Just as long as it is being Yelped about!

   I miss the YWI thread... perhaps I should drink a bottle of wine tomorrow night and start one!! Weeeee!!!
   
   People who smoke + drink = more fun! Okay, you don't have to do both. I think they are both social lubricants. Smokers are generally social with each other. And drunk people are chatty in general. And while those smoking drinkers may die an early death, which alleviates health costs, at least they are going out, drink in hand, smoke in mouth, saying "WOW, that was a ride!"
