The trailer is out for the documentary No Fun City based on Vancouver: http://www.youtube.com...

What do you think?  Do you miss The Cobalt?  Do you miss Richard's on Richards?  Do you agree with the label "No Fun City"?

I miss Dick's on Dicks.  I saw many awesome shows there.  I also think Vancouver needs a better damn transit system that runs later (cough. skytrain. cough.) so I can actually go out and enjoy a lot of the later shows without having to worry about how I am going to get home.  But that's another issue.

However, on a positive note, I am looking forward to checking out The Rickshaw.

The Rickshaw is really fun with a crowd, and kind of eerie when it's empty. The sound is as good as you can get for a live band playing front stage, and the view is untouched from the days of cinema showing...

I don't actually miss the cobalt all that much. Yes, they played a lot of new music, but they didn't have a lot of diversity. By "they" I mean both the booking and the people attending the shows, it was kind of a niche that was hard to fit in to without the uniform.

The new cobalt hosts a large variety of concerts, anyone who wants to play, and made a bunch of improvements (no more sticky floors!  no more holes under the stage!) Also, theyre priced about the same as the old place. They just lost the denim vested patched punks since they're too snobby to go anywhere that doesn't serve pacific pilsner.

Richards on richards was awesome though. But with all the venue spaces opening up all of a sudden, I don't really understand that validity of this documentary. I mean, running a venue is about business as much as it is about culture, right?

Thanks, Mathieu.  I hope to be seeing a show at The Rickshaw this month.  They got the sound and light system from Richard's, apparently.  So it's like having a bit of that venue still around.  Hopefully the show won't be dead.

I never went to the Cobalt, so can't comment.  Sticky floors are never pleasant, so that's a bonus if they are gone.

There are a few good venues around, and I for one, would be truly heart broken if The Railway Club ever went away.  Not the best sight lines, and very crowded, but good beer, good people, and always a good time.

The Biltmore has gained a lot of popularity, and I have seen a bunch of shows there.  However, I find the space a bit too dark, and too loud.  Ear plugs are a must at that venue.

I agree, No Fun City is a bit harsh, but I think the focus is on the bylaws and restrictions the venue owners face when trying to keep a live music venue open.  I don't know much about all that.  I think the problem is the downtown core, which is why we are seeing venues open up away from that area of town.

Have to say.. I've never heard of the Cobalt.

I do agree with the No Fun City label though. It never ceases to amaze me that we aren't allowed to drink in public, that we lost the Indy and the Grizzlies, and that as a result of a small riot more than 15 years ago you still can't walk around the streets of downtown after a playoff loss without being told to "move along" by police.

@ Steven - Except after the Gold Medal Men's Hockey Game during the Olympics.  Unless you were climbing on top of glass bus stop shelters or up light standards (saw both), the cops were letting us have our street party.

I love the Rickshaw!   It's one of my favorite places - one of the few venues around Vancouver dedicated to really interesting shows, an alternative crowd, and respecting the DTES culture.  I will likely be at the screening as well!

Haha. The cops didn't really have much of a choice there did they.

However, when it came to demanding that liquor stores close at 2:00 p.m. every day for the last week of the Olympics, the cops made sure the reputation lived on.

I saw this during DOXA in the spring. It's definitely worth a watch!

  7. 9/2/2010 Mathieu "Button Masher" Y. says:

As much as I like the railway club, I know if it too was gone that somehow the good beer people and bands would survive. I hope!

Yeah, it kind of bugs me how much bylaws we have to get people in to bars if they want to spend a night drinking. Our liquor stores close early by anyone standard and the no public alcohol gets extended during events to random bag searches on teh street! If I have an un-opened six pack or bottle, the city SHOULD have no right to confiscate that! But our bars pay good taxes, I guess.

No fun city is a bit of an interesting label.

-It's no fun if you enjoy going to indie shows without a bunch of rules.
-It's fun if you enjoy outdoor activities.
-It's no fun if you want (like me) a revolution in liquor laws so that we're not taxed out the wazoo for even a single pint, and more private businesses can open up to service small vertical markets.
-It's tons of fun if you love going to watch sports.

Basically the label is silly, although I do agree that the government should treat us more like adults than it does now.

I havent been around Vancouver long enough to completely depreciate the scene and accessibility of such.
I will say this, though. From the things I hear, see, and have been a part of it seems difficult to come by all the things I loved when I was living in Edmonton (a city with a music scene that blows the doors off other much larger, less red-necky places).

I dont get it. They just want us to stay the hell out of their way and to not cause trouble, right? Then help us do just that! Give us our play-pens, with reasonable security, prices and by-laws to abide by.. and we can do it. Promise.

The most trouble/crap Ive managed to stir up, has always happened when we were bored and frustrated with having NO WHERE TO GO.
