Seems Google is rolling its old Google Voice product directly into Gmail now.  (See announcement:  http://gmailblog.blogs...)

The announcement says it is only being rolled out to US gmail users.  But calls are free to both US and Canada.

But I'm not sure it is just to US users, as I logged in today and it was already active here in Vancouver.  But that may be because I was an old Google Voice user from the time when Google Voice was Grand Central and before it was restricted for only people in the States.  Not sure.

Is it turning up for everyone else already here in Canada?

Yep, I have it in my gmail. I haven't tried it yet, though.

Just used it! -and yes, I was a Grand Central user as well. I called the U.S. =free.

So kind of a stealth secret Canadian rollout of Google Voice then.  Nifty!

I really like the call management features it provides.  Truly a great service.  The dial one number, but ring all your numbers thing is wonderful.  The customized outgoing messages depending on the person calling or time of day is wonderful.  The free calling to anyplace in Canada and the US is wonderful.  Glad they are finally rolling it out up here.  Hopefully they'll give Canadian area codes soon too!

I got the free outgoing voice calls as of yesterday as well.

But I'm still waiting on some of the other Google Voice features that I really want - Google one number, online voicemail storage, SMS to email, etc. - hopefully they roll out with them soon for Canadians.

@Johnson - You can set all of that up without a problem, but it will be stuck with a US Area code unfortunately for now.  (Or apparently an Alberta one if you figure out the system well enough.)

The BBC says it may all have been a mistake:
'"The product will initially be rolled out in the US, the firm said. However, for a brief time, international users were also able to use the feature because of an error.

"Unintentionally we briefly made the service available to non-US English users," a spokesperson said. "We do hope to bring it to our international users soon"'

Like Johnson, I'm still waiting to be able to use my Canadian cell phone number with my US Google Voice account -- I had a Gizmo account back before Google bought it and so I can forward my Google Voice calls to Gizmo... which then forwards to my Canadian number. It works okay, but not great, and SMS's don't go through.

I haven't checked my gmail yet but did watch a demo on cnet yesterday! As a smartphone user it is extremely rare I log in online - but this is good incentive to!

Free long distance calls are deadly!

I check my gmail - and I do have it!

Their international rates are crazy low! To ring a friend's mobile in ireland from my mobile is about $1. to 1.50 (Telus keeps increasing it so I'm not sure the current). The same call using Skype is $0.24 per minute, which I don't think is too bad. Using Gmail that call would be $0.19 per minute. I'm still using Skype because I'm usually somewhere when I need to make the call as they are 8 hours in the future so the Skype app on my itouch makes it really easy. But if I were home I may try out the Gmail calling.

@Jenni - if you can get a google voice account setup then you can actually make the calls from your wifi device using a gizmo account.  Here are some details:  http://www.google.com/...

Thanks the link Marc. I should look into it... right now though I've got some Skype credit to burn!
