Yelpers like to share right? So what is your beauty secret? I want cool products, colors, techniques, tools, etc. Found anything cool lately?

Here - I will start :)
- Bed Head 1" curling iron... it's cheap ($30) and curls hard to manage hair really well... mine lasted two days (i'm on an every other day wash cycle for my hairs, and I had to test how good it was).
- Smashbox face primer... I don't know how I lived without it.
- False eye lashes; not that I just discovered them or that they are a secret but I got real good at gluing them on. I've been using the Quo ones.
- L'Oreal Collagen mascara is my lash love of the moment.
- Charles Worthington smoothing serum for my hair (liquid hair crack if you have frizzy hair, it smooths, makes consistent texture and doesn't make your hair look greasy like some serums do). If you see it sold here please tell me, my stock pile is diminishing too quickly.

  1. 6/8/2010 Karen "Kwoww" R. says:

    - Bumble and Bumble Thickening Serum ($35ish)  - It's really expensive for what you get however, it's magical, making my hair shine and look extremely luxurious.
    - Brambleberry Rose lip gloss ($8) - really pretty, it stays on and it feels silky on
    - Rimmel Nail polish  - cheap cheap cheap, great coverage and it lasts pretty long.  I love Purple Addict.

  2. 6/9/2010 Karin F. says:

For those fighting with naturally curly (often frizzy) hair as I do, try the following products:

    Redken All-soft Heavy Cream conditioner
AG Fast Food leave in conditioner
TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock curl amplifier
    Biosilk silk therapy serum

This combination works wonders on my hair.  I find that the shampoo really isn't an important factor for me.

  3. 6/9/2010 Karin F. says:

Oh, and when styling long curly hair, comb in the product, then style your locks by spiralling strands around your fingers to create a perfect corkscrew curl.  Allow your hair to dry completely.  And then tousle your hair to create lift and volume.

Most people with curly hair scrunch it or stress it with heat...trust me, the above technique (while time consuming) really works! :)

    6/9/2010 Tania "Bunnie" Y. says:

    I love girly things!!

    Some of my favorite things.....

    - That Gal face primer by Benefit - completely evens out your skin tone and you can wear it under foundation or alone
    - Nars Orgasm and Laguna Blush/Bronzer Duo
    - Cargo Eye-Lighter Duo stick - a shimmery side and a matte side - use it for inner/outer corner of eyes, eyebrow bones, cheeks, or above upper lips.. oh how I love illusions!
    - Ardell Eyelashes - my fave brand. Affordable, natural, and bendable to fit and conform to your eye. Cheapest at Walmart!
    - Shu Umera eyelash curler

As for hair... I have dead straight Asian hair. When I want curls, I use a straightener. It works wonders. I can even skip the hairspray and it'll still be curly the next morning. YES, THE NEXT MORNING. With a curler, I need a whole bottle of hairspray... and sometimes, I still end up with limp noodles on my head.... super... not sexy?

  4. 6/9/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

Nice thread, Jenni!  I think I will try and find that curler... I have been looking for a small diameter one that will give me good ringlet curls that stay in hard to manage hair, like mine.

I went to Sephora and got a new cover up for my wickedly bad under eye issues (dark, and blood blistered since I was a little kid).  I wanted something more natural, so the lovely girl found me Korres Wild Rose Concealer.  It works pretty good and wasn't any more expensive than the Clinique stuff I had been using.  It's supposed to have anti-aging properties, too.

Other items in my makeup kit I adore:

    - Ecotools Makeup Brush set
    - Clinique Lash Power Mascara Long Wearing Formula - for when I want really long lashes and no smudging
    - Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizer
    - Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey
    - MAC Eyeshadow in Vex, and another one I can't recall the name of

Anyone have a good recommendation for a liquid eyeliner that doesn't smudge or transfer.  I have been having a hard time finding one that will stay put and that is easy to use.  I tried the Sephora pen eyeliner but it doesn't work well.  My eye lids overlap a lot so regular eyeliner just ends up halfway up my eyelid.

  5. 7/4/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

I have to add a few things, thanks to a few trips to Sephora:

    - Baby Shampoo from the dollar store - it cleans my brushes better than the $18 stuff from Sephora!
    - Sephora by OPI gold nail polish - they were out of the Nars so I bought it as a stand in, but actually prefer it.
    - Sexy Hair Chocolation Soymilk Shampoo... mostly because I love smelling like candy.
    - Urban Decay Eye Potion Primer... my eyeshadow has never stayed so perfect.
    - I also repurchased my hands down favorite MAC eyeshadow (Jest).

I made one disappointing purchase - Smashbox HD concealer. Not so hot on it, honestly my $ NYC coverstick from walmart offered better coverage. It is workable, but takes more time and is a bit more finikie.

Tristian ~ I can't believe I left Nars Laguna/Orgasm off my list. I'm really obsessed with Deep Throat right now too... has anyone tried their all in one stick? It's a bit dear, but multipurposed! And Cargo Eyelighter is on my ;list to try for sure!

Karen ~ I went and bought some Rimmel at London Drgus (woot 30% off this week), I'm stoked to try it, they have nice colors!

Kat ~ Perhaps I will replace my Smashbox with the Korres concealer? I wear liquid liner daily, and honestly the one I always repurchase is NYC at Walmart. It is crazy cheap and even when I do crazy cateyes it doesn't flake (loop hole if you're rubbing at your eye). Have you tried gel liner? I have Quo creme liner (so it's liquid but in a semi solid state), with some shadow on top of it it is indestructible!

  6. 7/4/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Oh yah, Karin - have your tried CHI Silk Infusion serum? I was stuck between Biosilk Silk Therapy serum and the CHI. Based on price I took the CHI (it was on sale, I'm a sucker for sales), but I have heard such fantastic things about Biosilk, wondering how the two compare. I am happy so far with the CHI Silk.

  7. 7/4/2010 Karin F. says:

Nope, Jenni, I've never tried CHI...I've learned that when I find something that works with my hair, not to change it up...and so I've stuck with Biosilk for quite some time now.  Very happy with the results :)

  8. 7/4/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

That's like me with my Charles Worthingon tamin serum (AKA - liquid hair crack). Knowing how much you love it I am going to try it once I get through my CHI :)

  9. 7/4/2010 Roanna "@Beandar Zee" Z. says:

I'm just doing my first swap with MUA http://www.makeupalley.../
I'd recommend it if you want to eliminate some of those extra items you have that you paid good money for and couldn't really use while getting something back that you CAN use.
I just found something that was a discontinued item, and I'm really stoked about that.

7/6/2010 Sonya "Here to promote Wal-Mart" R. says:

Yogurt as a face mask.. I'm into DIY beauty stuff right now, if you want to learn about it I picked up EcoBeauty by Janice and Lauren Cox at Whole Foods.
I really love the Body Shop's lipstick in Soft Red and Physician's Formula shimmer strips for eyeshadows and highlighting.
If you want a hair mask and are too lazy to DIY, I love Lush's Marilyn mask, it's for blonde hair so Jenni it would be perfect for you, but it also is amazing at softening hair.I use apricot and sweet almond oils for moisturizing, as well as castor oil (it is also amazing for strengthening nails and eyelashes/eyebrows.. it even thickens and darkens them). And apparently coconut oil is a natural sunscreen that protects you from free radicals, allows you to get vitamin D from the sun (which spf sunscreens block out), and lets you get an even, golden tan. MUA is an amazing resource! Found out all these things through them.

  10. 7/6/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

Ooh, I'm glad this is back!

@ Jenni - I ran out of the Korres concealer in a month!  It went waaay too quick, and after a lot of use, I discovered that it didn't last as long as I would like during the day.  Because it is a natural product it is a pretty light coverage makeup.  I need something a little thicker to deal with my under eye issues.  I am now trying out Smashbox High Definition Concealer.  It has a thicker coverage and seems to last pretty far into the day without much creasing under the eye.

I'll try the gel or NYC liners.  I think they carry NYC at Shoppers, too.  Thanks for the tip!

  11. 7/7/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Cyndi - I **heart** Boots products. When I discovered Shoppers carried it I literally almost burst into tears and rang a friend in Ireland because it reminded me of Dublin (It was my London Drugs there).

Sonya - I have been looking for a good hair mask. I think I need to make a trip to Lush!! I'm going to look up that book on Amazon now :) If you need coconut oil go to Galloways, I saw a thing of it for like $3 (days after I paid $10 for the same amount at Planet Organic).

Kat - that\s disappointing on the Korres. I got that Smashbox concealer a few weeks ago and I'm not wild on it. But I have been using stick concealers for years. I have really heavy dark circles so covering them needs something awesome. I was looking at Amazing Cosmetic and another one (I totally can't remember the brand). I have a feeling my Smashbox is not going to last long I'm burning through it quickly!

This is going to sound odd but I have two bruises on my legs (I'm a klutz and walk into things constantly + easily bruise = bad combo!) I'm going to test some out on my bruises to see how they hold up. I'm going to look like a crazy person but they're not much darker than my dark circles.

  12. 7/8/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

Jenni - Ugh, I hear ya on the dark circles.  I've been using concealer since I was about 12.  I seem to be using a lot of the Smashbox stuff too.  It lasts into the day well, but I need to put on about 2 - 3 layers for it to cover.  I may just go back to my old standby of Clinique Quick Corrector.  It lasts many months and is applied with a little sponge tip applicator, but it's prone to creasing and not lasting throughout the day.  And that particular product is never at Sephora.  Or I'll just keep trying a new brand every month.  Le Sigh.  The other product they had me try was the Benefit Erase Paste.  I was split on that or the Smashbox to buy.  Maybe I should have gone with the Benefit.

  13. 7/9/2010 Luisa D. says:

All I can say is that I've used Oil of Olay since I was 15 (with SPF since it became available) and people are always surprised by my age.
I am pretty much useless when it comes to make-up and hair but would love to learn some tips so thanks for starting this thread Jenni!

  14. 7/9/2010 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

I just bought a new "Marilyn" boar bristle brush at Ulta (not sure if you have them in Vancouver? But you could probably get it at Sally Beauty Supply) and I'm loving it. I have really plentiful wavy hair and this is a great brush (so far) for straightening while blowdrying. No excessive round brushing and twisting required! It was $20.

It just looks like this: http://www.salonblonde...

  15. 7/12/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Kat - I totally went to Sephora on saturday and applied Erase Paste to a dark bruise on my knee. The bruise was pretty much black, and it did lighten is significantly. It didn't totally cover it but I was getting really strange looks so I didn't do a proper job of it either. I don't think my knee is representative of all day wear, but it seemed to cover for several hours (did not set it wirth powder). I really want to try the Amazing Concealer http://sephora.com/bro... , but it's so dear!  I have been using my SmashBox sparingly, so basically I have had lightened circles instead of no circles. I should just start going to town on it so I can buy the next. I'm just pissed, because the stuff was $22 and I lost my receipt so I can't return. I bought L'Oreal Infallible concealer a while back and it did a much better job.

Luisa - now you can just keep up to date on this little thread for all our secrets (muah ha ha!!)

Kat - That brush looks very cool. And now I want one.

Does anyone know a pretty pale pink nail polish which doesn't need twenty coats and doesn't take hours to dry. I went and grabbed OPI in "It's a Girl" and after two applications I have decided I hate it. It takes 5 coats, and last night literally 3 hours after I applied my polish I demolished the varish on my right hand. I need a new pretty pink!

  16. 7/12/2010 Roanna "@Beandar Zee" Z. says:

Just to stir the pot a bit... OPI was one of the biggest offenders on the toxic chemicals in beauty products group. There was actually Formaldehyde and Toluene in the polish.  People put this stuff on their little girls nails and the kids put the fingers in their mouth too. Read an interesting article here:
    http://www.safecosmeti...

  17. 7/13/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Roanna - is it okay if I don't put my fingers in my mouth? Because their Nail Envy is the only thing that makes me have nails to speak of :S

  18. 7/13/2010 David L. says:

What you eat is more important than what you put on your skin.  A variety of vegetables and fruits, fish, chicken, green tea, soy, nuts, and milk. That's what I try to eat and drink everyday.  Let's not forget about getting enough sleep and exercise.

  19. 7/13/2010 from Yelp for iPhone Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

    re: pink polish

I recently had a mani with OPI "Moon Over Mumbai" and I lovvvved it. Only two coats; lasted 8 days.

I love Amazing Concealer too, nut because of my age I find it too thick so
I apply after a thick undereye sunscreen and moisturizer.

  20. 7/13/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

@ Jenni - Oooh, the reviews for that Amazing Concealer look good.  And if you use half as much as the Smashbox then you are essentially breaking even.

I like Nail Envy as well.  But I found a nail polish brand that is really nice (at a spa in Williams Lake, of all places) called ZOYA.  They are formaldehyde and toluene free, the colours kick ass, and the polish lasts.

  21. 7/13/2010 Roanna "@Beandar Zee" Z. says:

It's difficult to find the right colour of under eye concealer, so I mix them, but even then it seems to require a finish powder. (Then you end up with wrinkles). Harder still, is trying to do this with more natural products.
    what's a girl to do?  ;-}

  22. 7/13/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

I hear ya, Roanna.  You must set it with powder, otherwise it's just a waste of concealer as it won't stay put.  I tried the natural products, like Korres, which was nice and the colour okay, but it was just too thin and I ran out so fast!  They explained at Sephora that with the natural products they can't get as thick of coverage as the non-natural products.  It's a shame, since I liked the Korres, but at $22 a pop, I can't afford that every month.  Plus all the packaging and waste from the applicators adds up when you buy them all the freakin' time.  What's a girl to do?  Well... either get asked if you've been punched in the eyes recently, puked, cried or all three on a daily basis, or shell out the bucks and cover up the bags.  Le Sigh.

However, Jenni's suggestion of Amazing Concealer has the Sephora natural product stamp on it, so maybe it's a good bet.  I'm going to go try some out this week.  It gets a rating of 3 on the Skin Deep Database.

  23. 7/13/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

Hmm after looking through the Skin Deep Database, it seems that Korres isn't really that great.  Perhaps that Amazing Concealer is my best bet, after all.  I hear my Visa groaning already.

  24. 7/13/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Sephora does have a good return policy.

Before I make the 42 quid purchase I'm going to sephora w no makeup to test run it for a day. Good thing I'm flying through my smash box!

Roanna - try an undereye collagen filler to reduce wrinkles. That's what I do!

  25. 8/23/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Have to share - I have been using Maybelline Falsies when I'm, well not wearing Falsies, and it's my new favorite mascara! The wand is easy to use and gives awesome lengthy and volume, even for those pesky to get at lashes! I've already repurchased.

I also bought the Sally Hansen french manicure guide stickets as I have been doing my own manis ($2.99 for 200 strips at London Drugs) and am easily obsessed for the perfect polish job they help create. I also bought some little jewels at the night market last weekend and am having fun with them!

  26. 8/24/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Oh yah - Kat - Did you test out the Amazing Concealer. I am surprisingly still on my Smashbox but need a new one soon. I was testing out the samplers in Sephora and while I like the thickness, I was having a hard time finding the right color for my skin (common problem for me in fairness).

I tested out Two Faced Absolutely Flawless concealer and was impressed by the coverage and blendability (tested it over a mole and it reduced it a hair amount). I may give a Mac one a go next round... I like their Studio Fix line.

  27. 8/24/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

@ Jenni - no I haven't tried the Amazing concealer out yet, as I am still on the Smashbox, as well.  I am sure it must be getting low now, though.  I am very fair as well.  I will probably go in with no makeup and get them to try out the Amazing Concealer on me before I buy, too.  I may scare some children along the way, but it will be worth it.  I haven't tried any of the Mac concealers.  Let us know how it goes if you try it.

I got my Sephora birthday gift last month and it had a cool eye pencil in a metallic grey-blue.  Something I would never have bought myself, but I am loving it.  It's Sephora brand, and while not the greatest pencil, and doesn't stay in place very long, I love the colour.

I have discovered the perfect trio for my dark circles. I picked up some samples of Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Complex and for my eyes, it has been dramatic. Daytime I use Yves Rocher Actif Sensitive soothing anti-puffiness eye gel.

For concealer, I have bought my second tube of Clarins Instant Light Perfecting Touch - no powder required for setting. It's a smooth, creamy formula which brightens the eye area, and other shadowy spots on the face.

btw, if you ever see Toni, from Clarins doing makeup - he is brilliant - have him do your makeup. He is an artist!

  28. 8/25/2010 Luisa D. says:

At Kitsfest I got free samples of Parissa's eyebrow waxing.  I haven't tried them yet but my daughter did and said it didn't hurt a bit.

Trude - ooh good undereye tips! I heart yves roche, I'm going to need to order per your recommendation!

Luisa - waxing my own brows scares me! Does it explain the shaping? I'm kinda curious to try it!

I'll check it out myself and get back to you.  The strips are pretty small so I don't think it 'over'waxes.  Even my 18 year old "Metro' son (as Evilyn calls him) tried it.  Haha!

    1) Hair straightener - even though I have short hair now  I still need it
    2) SmashBox green face primer for those with redder skin, how the heck did I ever live without it lol
    3) Urban Decay eyeshadow primer.  Damn it's good for keeping my eyeshadow on!
    4) MakeUp Forever Duo Mat Powder Foundation - Can have it sheer or build it up!
    5) Dior DiorShow Blackout Mascara and DiorShow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum
    6) Nars Orgasm Blush
    7) Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo
    8) Hope in a Jar moisturizer for evening

I could keep going!  Basically my whole make up train case would have to come with me lol.

Jenni - I giggle too!  I will have to check out Deep Throat - I do love the names!

  38. 8/28/2010 Luisa D. says:

@Jenni - I tried out the Parissa eyebrow strips. They're good for getting those really light, fine hairs that stray below the brow.  I often end up pinching my skin trying to tweeze those as I can't seem to do it with my glasses on.  You don't have to press the whole strip down either if you are trying to work around the shape of your brow.  I still had to pluck a couple of stubborn ones that were close to the main brow and I wanted to be careful.  I don't know how much they cost but if the price was reasonable I'd buy them.  This was way easier than threading and less painful than plucking.  Oh - I was able to do it with my glasses on too. :)

  39. 8/28/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Catherine - I'm glad I'm not the only one who giggles over the names!

Luisa - Thanks for the update on them! I'm too much of a wuss to pluck (and I have a crazy amount of eyebrow naturally - not I say eyebrow as opposed to eyebrows). I was going to head to Surrey for a threading this weekend (though I need to try some places by me)... I'm tempted to go buy some and givem a go now!

  40. 8/28/2010 Catherine "Wacky Whiskers" W. says:

@Jenni - There is a place on Belmont in New West that does threading if that is closer to you.  It's reasonably priced too.

    8/29/2010 Gabby S. says:

My sister sent me the Skin Deep website awhile ago so I've been phasing out the toxic stuff. I did buy a bunch of Smashbox shadow, primer, mascara but realized all the pretty shimmer is from crushed glass or whatever...I wear contacts and I started getting redness around my eyes. Not sure if it's a reaction to my Lancome or Smashbox.

Eyeshadow: switched to Lavera (great when there's 20% discount at London Drugs); sometimes, I do add the shimmer powder on top of the Lavera powder
    Eyeprimer: BareMinerals
Lip: Lavera but I love YSL fushia colours and Mac Lipglass
Nails: Suncoat - waterbased but hard to take off
    Hair: Aubrey Organics
Brushes: Quo (the black handled ones when it's 40%off at Shoppers), Mac

Because I had a bad dye job, and had to colour the mistake, my hair became really really dry. I used to put a lot of conditioner, hair mask, deep oil treatment to hydrate it. Nothing worked until I switched to Aubrey Organics GPB shampoo and conditioner. My hair is so healthy now. I used to put in Biosilk but realized the alcohol will eventually cause damage. Now I use Jojoba oil. A drop goes a long way and I have thick long hair.

  41. 8/29/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

Thanks Gabby, those are great tips!  I have been looking for good shampoos. I find most of the natural or paraben/sulphate free shampoos leave my hair heavy and not clean feeling. I think the ends of my hair could use some jojoba oil and I don't even dye mine.

  42. 8/29/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Gabby - I am going to have to get some jojoba oil now! My CHI seems to have gotten my hair into a much better state - but I get highlights so it is always being re-damaged. I love your recommendations, I want to use more organic products... but dang it I'm so addicted to Smashbox, Nars, Urban Decay  and Mac!!

Have any of you mastered the art of curling your hair with a flat iron? I just tried it for the first time and I like the look. But I feel it could be improved. I have a cheap flat iron from Winners. Does anyone have a CHI or GHD. I'm kinda drooling over the GHD but it's sooo expensive! I did see they automatically convert voltage which is awesome for travelling, but it would have to be totally superior to justify.

For everyone thinking of purchasing eyeshadow primer:  Try using your liquid foundation first instead!  I use Clinique foundation (the lightest coverage kind) and when applied to my eyelids it works as a great eyeshadow primer!  I've been doing this for most of my life and it has never failed me.  My eyeshadow stays put - even mostly overnight on those weekends where "passing out" describes my decent into sleep the most accurately.

Also, if anyone is looking for a really spectacular bronze shimmery eyeshadow - I've recently fallen in love with "baked" by Urban Decay.

  45. 8/31/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Lex - that's awesome. I've heard really good things about Clinique foundation, I need to try it out, and then try it as a shadow primer! And aren't those makeup still on mornings so rockstar!?

  46. 8/31/2010 Catherine "Wacky Whiskers" W. says:

Hi Lex - I used to do that but still found it creased in my eyelids badly.  I then tried their "primer"/canvas and it was just as bad but for some the tip is useful :)!

  47. 9/1/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

Yeah, I have problems with my eyelids because they are rather deep, I guess. And my skin tends to be a bit oily, so everything creases, including primers.  Sigh.

Anyhow, it's Clinique Bonus Time coming up at the Bay in Metrotown if anyone needs to stock up.

  48. 9/2/2010 Catherine "Wacky Whiskers" W. says:

    I am a Sephoraholic lol.

  49. 9/2/2010 Catherine "Wacky Whiskers" W. says:

@Kat - Try Urban Decay Potion for the eye primer.  Has worked wonders for me.

  50. 9/2/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

Okay, I'll give it a go.  Thanks, Catherine!  It is at Sephora?

  51. 9/2/2010 Catherine "Wacky Whiskers" W. says:

Yes, it's at Sephora.  Also if it doesn't work you can take it back for a refund.  Sephora has awesome return policies.

  52. 9/2/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

    Thanks!

  53. 9/2/2010 Lex "Lextacular" B. says:

Jenni - I do LOVE being able to pass out somewhere other than my home and still have my eyeshadow look awesome!  (even if my eyelashes are a little crushed to one side.)

My skin leans a tad towards the normal/dry side - so maybe the foundation-as-eyeshadow-primer doesn't work so wonderfully with oily skin.  :)  But normal or dry skinned ladies - give it a shot!

    Awesome thread!
    These are my faves:

Concealers: Vincent Longo (this one is creamier I like it for summer) and Bobbi Brown (comes with a concealer and powder!)
Foundation: Bobbi Brown Luminous moisturizing formula
Moisturizer: Dr. Haushka's Rozen Day cream - helps with the havoc the freakish weather is having on my skin
    Mascara: Dior Show
Check out Napoleon Perdis, they have some great stuff - love their brushes and Nars and Mac dominate my makeup supply
    Zoya nail polish rocks!

and 100% pure shea butter for moisturizing the really dry parts, or put a bit in the bath

Bobbi Brown Luminous  foundation is totally fabulous. I switched to BB from Chanel and have not regretted one face day. Get it at Holt Renfrew or Murale, or Nordstrom when you go to Seattle. The duty free at YVR is too pricey.

I used the BB concealer for many years, it is smooth and creamy.

Tonight I will put some 100% pure shea butter into my bath, and settle in with a new book. Thanks, Ema, for the great tip!

  54. 9/3/2010 Catherine "Wacky Whiskers" W. says:

I have never thought to put the shea butter into the bath.  Where can I get pure shea butter?  I have uber sensitive skin so I always have a hard time finding things that don't irritate my legs in a bath.

Shea Butter is great in the bath - a little annoying to clean but way easier than trying to rub it all  over ;P
if you like essential oils and stuff dont go here, you will get addicted : http://www.newdirectio.../
you can get fair trade ,shea butter there for cheap and if you like diy melt down the shea butter, add some essential oil and maybe a bit of jojoba and put it in tins for gifts for your friends...if you have any left

You can also get shea butter from L'Occitane on Robson and Burrard (next to Coach) but it's SUPER expensive there!

yea, the BB concealer is my go to. I just ran out and I am stuck with Shu Uemura  which is too thick, ugh

I bought mine back in New Zealand, where they are really popular.  I can't believe they're not really popular here - even salons don't seem to use them, which is weird (I wouldn't trust a hairdresser at home who didn't use GHDs to style!).
I'm not sure where you can buy them here, sorry - but there are SO MANY frauds out there.  You can probably get them shipped from the official website, from the US or UK...

  56. 9/7/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

We get everything last in Canada! It sucks! I was price comparing and they are cheaper in Europe than in the US.... I'm visiting Dublin soon and like every salon there sells them so I may have to purchase. Only pain in the arse is the eternal need to use a power converter then :S But I'm impressed by the auto-voltage detector on it!

I have read this entire thread and it rocks my socks. I am excited to check out the essential oils link, the Yves Roche coconut perfume, and more! Here's a little somethin-somethin from me:

I use i.d. bare minerals foundation and blush. I bought the intro kit a few months ago and still love it. Not sure if it would do the trick with dark eye circles, but I've def. noticed how even and glowy my skin is!

I also use Pure Facial Moisture (Nourishing) from Suki for a moisturiser. I use 1-2 drops after a facial mist (Colorscience Spritzer). It's changed my skin quite a bit - from combination with lots of little dry patches to more smooth and even skin.

I ordered the Suki stuff and mist from http://www.essentialda.... With my order came a bunch of freebies (which I love getting!!!). Plus, they sent a sample of Dr Hauschka Birch-Arnica Body Oil for sore muscles ... I have been using it after yoga or running and it is the best stuff!

  58. 9/8/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Kat - omg seriously? Clearly I'm going to Sephora like, tomorrow!

Justine - I'm curious to try the bare minerals, glowly skin is a pro so has totally piqued my interested!

@Cyndi - I have two Moroccon oil products -both by Yves Rocher, and they are wonderful. I use Tradition de Hamman, with Moroccon argan oil, which is a skin balm, and the bar soap. The soap is  luxurious, creamy oil in a bar. Very softening for the skin.

  65. 9/11/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Just had to share - I got the MAC Studio Sculpt foundation (above post) and I'm in love. If you need medium to full coverage this stuff is awesome. It's thick but this sort of creamy/mousse-y texture. It easily covers my imperfections, does a good job hiding my dark circles on it own, and last really well even without primer. I'm not a fan of the packaging (plastic squeeze tube) but that's my only complaint.

@catherine - yes i think its benefit too, was it good? dior is pretty hard to beat, chanel didnt even come close! how do you like the dior primer? what does it do for you? I find the mascara stays on all day with no smudges so does it make them longer or even fuller?!

  68. 9/13/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Ema - do it! It's a great highlighter blended in on the brow and cheek bones, inner eye, and in the cupid's bow of one's lip. Gives a nice dewy appearance. Also works blended on the lid. And of course for tight lining one's eyes when short on zzz's. YouTube videos explain it all :)

  69. 9/13/2010 Catherine "Wacky Whiskers" W. says:

@Ema - Dior show is the best I have come across.  I like the primer but it's actually more of a plumper.  I have long lashes but I also like to have them thick so it adds volume.  I LOVE it.  I have tried Lancombe, Clinique, Sephora brand, every drug store brand, BadGirl, MAC and a few others and Dior Show is the awesomest lol.

I have lost the shea butter posts lol.  Is the liquid Shea Butter like an oil and a little cream at the bottom.  I saw something at shopper's for about 10 for the bottle and said it was liquid shea butter but it looked more like oil to me lol.  Maybe that's what it's supposed to be and i am just an idiot lol.

  70. 9/14/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

I bought the Urban Decay Potion Eyeshadow Primer on the weekend and so far so good!  Thanks for the tips, ladies!

3 things I pack when I only need the basics include:

    1. Concealer - currently finishing up the last of my Smashbox, but Clinique Quick Corrector will do
    2.  Loose powder - Clinique
    3. Mascara - Whatever kind, as long as it is black and not clumpy.

@catherine - i have never seen liquid shea butter... 100% pure shea is like a white butter, really thick though and slightly difficult to apply over large parts of your body. You can heat it up in the micro, or put it in the bath for all over body application
    - ok now i am totally going to try those ideas out! sounds like i need a soft pencil - do you have a fave brand?
    - yep, dior is the best i have tried too and I tried chanel, clinique, Lancome, MAC, Napoleon Perdis, shu uemura (they have a good waterproof one for lengthening), and tonnes of the ones sephora carries. the best drugstore brand i found was maybeline great lash but its not that good, certainly no where near dior, but its way cheaper!

Anyone tried Armani,  Nars, Shiesdo or Guerlain's mascara?

  72. 9/15/2010 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Kat - glad you like the urban decay primer. I am just using up my last bit of Smashbox. I think I've decided to to try MAC Studio line next.

Ema - I haven't tried any of those brands. I typically buy drugstore for mascara (usuing L'Oreal I love Telescopic, Collagen, and Volumious from them). It looks like I'm going to have to try DiorShow now though!

I finally purchased the Amazing concealer that we talked about before. It has been a bit tricky getting used to because it is so thick, but I am starting to like it. You only need to use the tiniest amount, which has been my major mistake, trying to use too much. The coverage is very good, but it has an oily texture which I find a bit more difficult to work with. If you end up using too much it will definitely crease under your eyes. I think this stuff requires a good primer which I don't have. That may help. Anyhow, the 43 bucks was worth it since I am sure I will be using it all year.

It is from Amazing Cosmetics. Just called amazing concealer. They have it at Sephora.  I haven't used a sponge or brush because I use it for under my eyes and normally I have found my finger is best for that area.  I have pretty severe marks under my eyes that are difficult to cover. @Kat - I've started using a brush for concealer and once I got used to it, find it is better than my finger. I think I might go to Sephora and try out your recommendation. Clarins changed the formula on the one I have been using. Now it has oats in it - and it is not as effective as in the past. Do oats give you horse type eyes?

I posted this on a separate thread and it was suggested I should post it here:

I have a trick you have to know if you ever break your pressed powder shadows or makeup compacts.

Find the purest isopropyl  alcohol you can get (99% is available at the Superstore). Add a very small amount to the broken makeup and using a chopstick or other small implement, stir and keep adding a few drops at a time until you have a nice creamy consistency. Flatten out the top as best you can then let it sit overnight to dry. Voila! You've got usable makeup again.

You'll find that this works just great, though with larger compacts such as mineral makeup, the hardness won't be close to what the original. It will break easier, but at least you can use it!

  85. 11/10/2010 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

    Thanks, Suze!

  86. 11/10/2010 Catherine "Wacky Whiskers" W. says:

I have a tip too that might help people.  I tend to get deodorant over a lot of things, especially black clothes, or sometimes it just doesn't completely come out in the wash.  Use a nylon over it, scrubbing it, and poof the white sightly stuff disappears!

    * Rocky Mountain Soap Company has delicious, moisturizing lip balms for $4!!!! (see my review)
    * Green Beaver (available at Whole Foods) has an amazing pineapple facial cleanser that actually fights breakouts, and a lightweight moisturizer
    * Avalon Organics mint shampoo and conditioner keep my hair strong and shiny
    * Alba kukui nut body oil is a great moisturizer that smells like cotton candy and keeps skin soft
    * honey and quick oats are a great facial exfoliator in the shower, and for the body, honey with sea salt works great. No salt on the face, people.

I started using it a couple of years ago and I never burn anymore.. lol no wonder!

@David W. YES Water IS the best beauty product there is. I notice a huge change in my skin if I'm not drinking enough.

I also take baths instead of showers most days. There is nothing like soaking in a hot tub to rejuvinate you. Instead of using soap, I just scrub with a face cloth everywhere and only use a tiny bit of soap on my underarms. Soap just messes up my girly parts so I have to be very careful with it. Soaking + Facecloth Friction really is all you need and your skin will find your skin extremely soft and lovely. The water softens all the dead skin cells which come off easy with that facecloth.. chemical free.

    @Suze and @David W.

Yes, water is the best. Drink tons of it. My body gets grouchy if I don't have enough water or veggies.

I also wonder what the SPF of coconut oil is! Time for some internet homework...

Washcloths are great for exfoliating. If soap messes your skin/lady bits up, what about bars that are made of olive oil? They're really gentle and non-irritating, or straight-up olive oil works too. One of my culinary teachers (who is Italian) said that his grandma used olive oil and tight up until the end (94 years or something?) she had the most amazing skin.

@Catherine - I just use a little nub of product in the bath. It does make it slippery, so be careful. When your skin is still damp, apply the shea butter to dry spots, and it just melts right in.

I also use liquid foundation as a base for my eyeshadow!

    Right now my favourites aaaaaaare:

-Urban Decay's "Honey" eyeshadow. This is the goldest eyeshadow I've EVER seen. My roomie actually went out and bought it herself because she didn't want to keep borrowing mine. It is SO perfect! It looks sort of mustard yellowy before you put it on, but don't let that scare you! It looks AMAZING. I promise, and I constantly get compliments when I wear it. Pretty much any Urban Decay eyeshadow is freaking fantastic.

-"High Beam" complexion enhancer by Benefit. Rub a bit along your cheekbones and you'll have the most amazing glow! Especially in photos. Go rub some on in Sephora with the tester, you'll see.

-Bedhead's shampoo for brunettes. I just have black dyed hair, but I bought this because it smelled like caramel-y deliciousness. Everyone who sniffs my head tells me I smell just like cookies.

That's all I can think of right now. I may add more later! :)

    @Cyndi

The last job I worked before entering the culinary field was at Changes Clothing & Jewellery Bar as a fashion stylist. If you set up a Diva Den, it's a personalized shopping party where one of the staff helps you find easy, fun outfits that are the most flattering for your lifestyle, shape, colouring etc. You can also bring a few favourite pieces from home and they can show you different ways to mix and match it up with new items. Rhonda is amazing at that.

If you want someone to come to your house, though, and purge your closet of anything that doesn't make you feel 150% hotness, contact Shelley Davies of Details Modern Order. She's a professional organizer of homes and offices, can see if there's anything in your closet that is consignment-worthy (and bring it to Changes for you, to try and sell it), and her clients then often visit Changes for one of those fabulous Diva Dens.

What I liked best about shopping with clients there was that there were so many different labels in the store so there was bound to be something cute that fit, as opposed to having to go to a lot of stores where the clothing at some didn't work with certain body types. I couldn't wear trousers from The Gap until they invented The Curvy Fit after realizing that women have asses!

I love that this thread provides us endless tips... and now feel like I need to go get shea butter :D

Had to give a shout out to a new product - although I've just purchased it and tried to for the first time today (so this could be sheer coincidence but I doubt it) - I got Macadamia Natural Oil Nourishing Leave In Cream.  I hate my natural hair texture as it can't figure out if it's curly, straight or wavy, and frizzes no matter what it does if untreated. Today I just put in this Nourishing Leave In Cream and let it air-dry to do its thang, and I can definitively say this is a very rare day as I would say I'm having a good hair day without having manipulated my hair. It's not frizzy, and the wave ended up fairly consistent. It smells divine as well :)

If anyone else is interested in trying it I got it at Winners downtown, it's $16.99.

  108. 1/11/2011 Jenni "Yelp is Not a Singles Bar" B. says:

Another product shout out - Baptiste Dry Shampoo. They currently have it [cheap] at the Winners downtown. Brought my hair from "I probably should have washed it last night" to "It looks like I washed it last night." It's seriously the best one I've tried.

Any of you ladies have tips for liquid eyeliner?  I am just terrible at applying it.

  110. 1/11/2011 Lex "Lextacular" B. says:

Are you using a brush or pen?

I tend to not like the pens because they run out fast and you have less control over thickness. The brush kind is my choice and my advice is just practice!  Practice on your hand.  Apply in one clean line, don't try to use more than one stroke.

  111. 1/11/2011 Kat "with club sauce" S. says:

I had a pen, but didn't like that it would go dry when I was halfway down my eyelid.  So I bought one with a brush.  But I find, even though I wipe the brush on the edge of the container when taking it out, I find the application of the liner very irregular, so it is quite bumpy looking when it goes on.  Do I need to just put a lot on the brush?
    Thanks, Lex!

  112. 1/11/2011 Lex "Lextacular" B. says:

I find having a brush full works.  Just wipe once lightly on the lid for any really excessive drips.

No soap! Your skin doesn't need soap to get clean. Remove oil and dirt and make-up with oil!

Use an oil like Alba Botanica's  Organic Kukui Nut Oil.  Put a quarter size dab in your palm, put it on your face and neck, massage for a minute, get a Norwegian 'Norwex brand' anti-bacterial facecloth, dampen with hot/warm water and take off the oil.

BTW, Norwex  is an all-natural cleaning line from Norway.  You don't use detergents or cleaning products- you use water.  And the cloths are anti-bacterial from the silver thread or something- not from some weird shit.

It's really remarkable how her hair looks now.

I think the only thing that scares me is the 'stink' factor.  Will me scalp get dandruff?  Will I look greasy? (yes, for a while.)  Will I have an unclean stinky head?  No.

Giant puffball, eh?  That's my look in Vancouver.  The damp is bad news for my naturally kinda wavy hair.  Here, in the Okanagan,  I look normal-ish.   There, in Vancouver, my hair suddenly wants to do 'let's revisit the 70's natural huge afro look.'

I did the baking soda and vinegar rinse 'shampoo' this week too.  I didn't like the  feel of my unconditioned hair.  It wasn't sleek looking at all.  I usually wear my hair slicked back into a tight ponytail for my work.  (Cook.)  I didn't like all the wispy pieces everywhere.

My make-up artists have shared some neat tricks with me over the years. Some you might have heard of.

Preperation H. Around the eyes reduces puffiness. And, if you pluck your eyebrows and have Anbesol handy, apply it beforehand to reduce pain. (It's a topical anesthetic.)

There's a brand of eye drops you can get in Europe that make your eyes glimmer and it enhances the colour. Not FDA approved though so can't get it in Canada or US.

I also tell models to drinks lots and lots of water before a shoot. Wrinkles are mostly caused by dry skin. Stay hydrated & moisturize. Many models stay away from coffee entirely. Sucks to be them.

    5/27/2011 Rachel "Foxme" F. says:

Best product I have used in ages that I have totally converted several of my friends to is from a brand called Viva Health. I have used their gel exfoliator and their anti-wrinkle cream. THG as far as I am concerned. All natural and made locally, you can get it at Whole Foods, Capers, all around the Lower Mainland.

Their Amaze Gel is basically the best exfoliator I have ever used. Gentle, but effective. Only requires a tiny amount. Spread it on thin, wait a few seconds, rub in circles and all of a sudden grey pulp - YOUR DEAD FACE SKIN - starts coming off. It's incredible. I have totally noticed a difference in my pores in the past month or so that I started using it. It's very, uh, satisfying because you see the "cornified layer" (their term, not mine) come off. Very effective. A little pot the size of a lipbalm costs about $9 and lasted me about 2 weeks, using it more-or-less daily. The more often you use, the better. No weird smells, stinging, etc. Just very bright skin.

I also started using their anti-wrinkle cream which is a fantastic moisturizer... it's rich but not oily, my skin is happy. The first pot I bought I ended up taking back as it has an odd, almost metallic smell... I think it was rancid. Which is fine because it's all natural and that happens. Capers exchanged it no problem.

If you are looking for a fun new product to liven up a dull Saturday night (oh wait, that's my life) then buy the gel. If vacuuming, sanding wood or painting walls is something you find satisfying then your heart will pitter-patter when you see the balls of dead grey skin come off your face.
