We have a 20y.o fashionista from Manchester looking for sophisticated affordable fashions in Vanc. that are not in a mall! She's not into hippy fashions. She is looking for unique items not available in the UK. I'm a guy and have no idea where to point her. Can you help my tourist? Thanks!!

Main Street is great place to start, with boutiques like Barefoot Contessa http://www.yelp.ca/biz..., Twigg and Hottie http://www.yelp.ca/biz..., Life of Riley http://www.yelp.ca/biz....

There are also a lot of boutiques in Gastown, too.  I am not too familiar with all of them, but I have been to Narcissist http://www.yelp.ca/biz... (on Main as well), Two of a Few http://www.yelp.ca/biz....  Malene Grotrian has some very nice stuff: http://www.yelp.ca/biz.... As does Blushing Boutique: http://www.yelp.ca/biz....

I hope your visitor enjoys her stay.

I agree with Kat. Also, west 4th has some great boutiques. Moule, Gravity Pope, JNBY, and Urban Rack to name a few.

Also on Main Street, there is Front and Co, Smoking Lily and various other ones all around the ones Kat mentioned all around 16th and 24th. Depending on whether she is interested in consignment (UK called Second Hand shops), there are also a bunch of shops around Main and Broadway.
Depending on when she is here there is also portobello west Market.
    Have fun :)

Oh yes, 4th Ave!  Good call, Melissa!  I also love Spank.  They have a shoe store next door, too.

Front and Co has a good selection of designer consignment, so stuff she can probably get in the UK.  But there are some cool pieces as well.  If she's looking for something high end, then Smoking Lily probably isn't her thing.  While I love Smoking Lily and covet most items, it might be a bit too Hippyish for her tastes, based on Jeffery's description.  But, it is right next to Umeboshi http://www.yelp.ca/biz... which has fancy shoes, so might as well stop in.

And for something unique and very Vancouver, she must check out John Fluevog Shoes either in Gastown http://www.yelp.ca/biz..., or on the Granville strip.

For great, local fashion finds, I always send people to Devil May Wear (3957 Main St). It would be easy to hit if she decided to go to any of the other Main St suggestions here.

Gastown's boutiques are quite expensive - I find that besides Deluxe Junk Co., there isn't much in my price range. It's cool to check out for local designers though.

I also really like True Value Vintage on Granville & Robson, and Commercial Drive is good for shopping - check out Banshee, Barefoot Contessa and Mintage, a vintage/new retail shop.

Finally I like Broadway & McDonald onwards, heading towards UBC - they have great second hand and boutique type stores. 41st avenue in Kerrisdale, a few blocks south, also has good stuff. Try 41&McDonald.

Don't know how much time you have, but it's useful info to just in case you're in the area for food or something.
