A lot of people I know just use the friends list as a way to keep track of persons' whose opinions they particularly respect. If you are scouting a restaurant, yelp is set up such that the people you're following and your friends' reviews pop up first. Usually, over time, you'll get to know that person better too if you compliment them on reviews you found particularly well-written, useful, funny, and/or cool, and then they might actually become real friends!
For example, there's this guy in LA who's my sushi guru. He's reviewed probably well over 50 sushi joints, and I found that our opinions on certain places are almost identical, so I friended and fanned him. Now we chat about sushi and stuff, discovering places, making recommendations... these are relationships you build over time: there's no rush! Welcome to yelp!
