Kadoya! It's on Davie. I found out about it from a friend who lives just down the street, and it's a must-try. Everything's superbly yummy, but the spicy tuna sashimi/salad (I forget how they categorize it) is soul-crushingly delicious.

Avoid Kisha Popo, which is a block or so away. It's not what it used to be.

Fujiya is my favourite place to get sushi and other Japanese treats ... they have an onigiri bento that's fabulous, and a rice cake that's a big piece of tempura shrimp surrounded by rice and wrapped with nori - yum!

The sushi is high quality and cheap - the salmon and tuna rools, for example, are simply stuffed with fish. Just buy whatever looks good, and take it with you to the closest park. (The downtown store is pretty close to the Coal Harbour seawall; I've spent plenty of lunch hours sitting on a bench watching the float planes and the boys with cute doggies while enjoying the Fujiya sushi.

You should clarify Samurai's as there is the unrelated one by Oakridge mall on Oak St (who also operate Banzai Sushi in Richmond). The Davies one is a regular stop for me because of the value, but I would hope there is a better piece of sashimi out there!

I've never been, but I would bet Tojo's would probably have the best piece of sashimi. The best piece I've had anywhere would be the two pieces of toro at Mitch's Sushi Bar in Honolulu for $18... melt in your mouth goodness!  I had a good piece of salmon at Yoshi on Denman, but good toro is always hard to find. Any suggestions?

Well, let's see...I am born and raised in Vancouver, been eating sushi since I was 3 years old, I am not Japanese and would not consider myself an expert, but I think I know a wee bit about it. So if you care to read, here is my recommendation (drum roll please)...

Miko on Robson near Jervis. I think it's the best fish in town (their toro melts in your mouth).  Really nice staff too. But I only go when my dad is paying. It's a bit pricey, but if you want to treat yourself, it's so worth it.

If I'm paying, I'd say Sushi Yama near Kingsgate Mall.

Miko is good, I forgot about that one! Definitely a step up from your usual 99c sushi spot.
Its also a Canucks hang out and visiting teams often visit (doesn't mean its good, just a fun fact...).  I also remember celebrity photos on the walls and the servers wearing the kimonos.

For good prices, I would recommend BC sushi on Broadway and Arbutus. If you wan a more expensive, fancier seating area, I would DEFINITELY recommend The Eatery on West Broadway.

8/27/2008 Graeme "the rocksteady" F. says:

I second the Sushiyama recommendation - pure awesome!  Spicy Tuna rolls are amazing.   Also - portions are great and the people there are friendly.  The wait times have been cut down since they renovated the place a while ago.

Samurai - not my favorite at all - both times I've eaten there, the fish was not good.   I got sick once and the second time it tasted very 'fishy' - weird considering it's fish and all.   I expect sushi to be fresh and Samurai's didn't taste fresh to me.

depends on how much you want to spend...

tojo's on broadway and en on 10th are a tie for me for the best sushi, but they're both expensive.  mid-range would be kabbuki or octopus garden in kitsilano and miko on robson.  a couple of places that are still really good but reasonably priced are toshi's on main, tsunami on robson, and sushi garden/sushi town in burnaby.

if you ever get a chance to go to tojo's, make sure you do the omakase!  basically, you tell the chef how much you want to spend and what you like or don't like and he creates a multi-course meal for you using ingredients that were swimming in the ocean only a few hours earlier.  i'm drooling just thinking about it...

Whoever posts anything about SAMURAI.....don't know anything about Sushi! Sushi is definitely NOT about quantity but the quality of the fish. If you'd rather pay a little for a huge slab of OLD sashimi than go for it, but for I'd rather pay a little more for mouth watering FRESH fish. And thats the way you're supposed to eat it. Thats why so many sushi restaurants these days are owned by Chinese or Vietnamese because the Japanese can't compete with their low pricing and they have more pride in their cuisine to not stoop so low. Nowadays, the Japanese are opening IZAKAYA's all around town. The best sushi places around town are, HOSHI SUSHI at SandBar in Granville Island. You can sit upstairs where the atmosphere is awesome and order sushi, the california roll is made with real crab and to die for...but the best is Hoshi san's sushi and sashimi! Miko Sushi is also great on Robson Street. If you make the trek up to Burquitlam FUJI SUSHI is good as well.

For what it is worth, I've got a list of my favourite Japanese food sources in Vancouver:  http://www.yelp.ca/lis...

Overall the sushi at most spots in Vancouver is subpar - although very cheap.  But there are a few decent spots scattered throughout the mass numbers.

I personally am torn by this simple question, just because I spent a lot of time across Japan and as such put great coutenance on fresh cuts, proper temperature of the fish and the art of plating.

Friends of mine swear by Honjin (NVan, Yaletown) but I don't. (Plus I think they're wanted by the Feds - Honjin that is, not my friends).

But I've always had a very good meal at Toshi's. It isn't flash, but they know what they're doing. You can also try Tojo's, the guy was on Bourdain's show for crying out loud but word on the street is its somewhat down hill now.

My favorite sushi restaurant is the new one opened last year right by Broughton Street and West Pender Street. I can't remember the name but it's very easy to find. It's right by the Axis Hair Salon on West Pender Street. They have another location in Kerrisdale and that one is always has a big line up. All the seafood are very fresh. It's a very fancy and high end restaurant. I am highly recommend this place.

  6. 4/12/2009 geraldine "small but mighty" g. says:

I highly recommend several places:  sushi yama on broadway;  ogenki sushi on main street;  kadoya on davie

now, if you have a visitor in town and want sushi fun time action, Tsunami Sushi on Robson. It's not thetop sushi in town but I have had so much every single time bringing friends their!

    enjoy!!!

  7. 4/13/2009 Crystal "Queen of the Yelp-i-dom aka Yelp Ambassador" H. says:

I don't know if I can add to all these fantastic locations (Especially with Marc's list - thanks man!)

but I'm wondering if anyone has been to modern japan's club recently. I love their tuna tataki ... and beef rapped asparagus (but that's not sushi) ... but I heard it has new owners. I'm hesitating to go in, just in case it's no longer good and I'll ruin my memory of the tuna tataki melting in my mouth with a burst of garlic...

In my opinion Octopus Garden is easily the best sushi I've had in Vancouver. I've been to kadoya and samurai many times and they are both just OK. They have both had really off days. Hamachi is my favorite thing to order and many places don't have it on the menu here, I was excited to see it on the menu at samurai but it was effen terrible. Not fresh and a really bad cut of fish.

I also like Yuji's on 4th ave in Kits. Like Octopus Garden it's a little pricey but you're paying for better quality.

Irashai Grill in Coal Harbour. Serisouly, it's the only place I have even reviewed so far. I go twice a week...really nice spot, newly renovated and the food is fantastic. The rolls are awesome and innovative. Everything is always super fresh and the prices are totally reasonable. They also have really great lunch specials. They've got flat screens so you can watch the playoffs too.
The ambience is super nice and the service is great...but most importantly the food is so delish. So much better than Miko on Robson. Definitely worth a try.

There's only a few places I go to eat REAL SASHIMI (and I can only recommend places on the East side since I rarely go West/downtown)
For places you can afford on a regular (maybe weekly basis), I'd recommend the Sashimi at Zipang on Main (not a huge selection, menu's very simple but traditional Japanese style foods..mmmmmm!) and Sake Maki on Commercial Dr (not Japanese owned, but the BEST by far on sashimi, even my dad approves and he's stopped eating salmon sashimi all together here) and Toshi's (except I never go because it's toooo busy and and watching the chefs, they obsess over the perfect pieces to the point where I want them to hurry up, but I love the family style atmosphere)
I DO NOT RECOMMEND the sashimi at Sushiyama (Korean owned) HOWEVER, their ROLLS are a few of the best on this side of town.  (Saki Maki is my current fave because of location, but their rolls can be a bit much with the Cupie Mayo)

I would suggest Tojo's as the best sushi in the city but it doesn't come cheap.  I eat at Samurai (on Davie) and have always enjoyed the food there without it being too expensive.  I don't do all-you-can-eat sushi...something about not wanting too much economic value when it comes to raw fish.
