Hey, Yelpers!

My parents, boyfriend, and I are going to downtown Toronto next weekend, but none of us have been to Canada.  We will definitely stop by Niagara Falls (I hear the view from the Canadian side is much better than that from the U.S. side) and Chinatown, but that's all that is concrete.  My boyfriend and I are open-minded foodies, so if you can, please list a bunch of recommended restaurants we should check.  Also, are there any must-see places, parks, etc.  Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Oh boy.  Where do I start?  How much time do you have to spend here?

~ You must take a trip up the CN Tower.  Just because.
~ If you like museums, the Royal Ontario Museum is very good.
~ For shopping, you should go to the Eaton Centre.
~ For unique, quirky shopping, walk down Queen Street (West of University) (I'm assuming you have a map! ;))
~ There are great restaurants all around - I hardly know where to start.  For some reason, most of them are VERY empty this summer, so you won't have trouble getting in.
~ I will apologize in advance for the state of our streets.  We're in the midst of a garbage strike.  The garbage bins are overflowing and litter is blowing around the streets.  We're usually known as a very clean city.  The current state of things is embarrassing! And if it weren't for the strike, I would recommend that you take a ferry ride across to the Toronto Islands, but the ferries aren't running.  Pout!!

I recently picked up a brochure from a company that does double-decker bus tours of Toronto.  You can hop on and hop off the bus whenever/wherever you like.  The map taught me things about this city that I didn't know, and I've lived her my entire life!  I think that would be a great way to see the city.  Check it out here: http://www.torontotour...  If you have a look on that site, you'll see a huge list of Toronto attractions.

If you have any questions, let me know.  I'd be pleased to help!

PS: There's another tour bus -- I think this is actually the one whose map I was looking at the other day.  http://www.etours.to/t... .  Looks like they have some great places on their route, too.

Wow, thanks, Carolyn!  We'll spend 3 days there, so there isn't a whole lot of time to do everything.  I will pass along your suggestions to my boyfriend so we can better plan this trip.  Thanks again!

    Hi Cat,

Have you visited http://www.toronto.com?  They have a list of events and places to see.  The things you must do are to visit the CN Tower for sure, Hockey Hall of Fame, Queen's Quay - where there is always some event going on.  If you like the quirky side yes there is Queen Street West.  Just south of it is the Entertainment District.  There is King West/Liberty Village which is King St West between Bathurst and Spadina.  Further west towards Dufferin Street is Liberty Village.  Yonge Street is the major shopping district.

Word of advise, get the TTC Family pass.  I don't know how much it would be a day nowadays but visit http://www.ttc.ca for more info.  Also Toronto is a member of those City Pass programs.  I am sure you can purchase it online http://www.citypass.com.  They were definitely helpful for me when I visited other cities.

As for food, if you're open Chinatown is pretty good but not for me...LOL.  You can also venture out of the downtown core and visit uptown Toronto where there is Yonge and Eglinton where there are plenty of restaurants such as Copacabana (http://www.copacabana.ca), a Brazilian Rodizio, which you will also find in Niagara Falls.  Word of advice though, if you go to the Niagara location, book NOW for next weekend.  There are plenty of smaller Italian, Mediterranean, Thai and other fancy fares.

That's all off the top of my head.  I'm sure there is plenty more I could think of but I hope you and your family enjoy your time in the great Toronto.

$9.50 for the TTC day pass and two adults can share it on weekends...very good deal (surprisingly)!

Personally I'd skip HHOF unless you're a diehard (plus wayyyy too many kids on weekends) and CN Tower is pretty pricey (I think $20 each?) so just bear that in mind. But Toronto Island is nice (I guess you have to take a water taxi there now because of the strike, ugh) and so are The Beaches!

And please be gentle when judging the beauty of our city when you visit...the strike has made it stinky and kinda unkempt looking. :)

Thanks for the heads-up about the city's trash situation.  I'll let my family know, too, so that there won't be any complaints. ;-)  There is so much to do now LOL, so I will plan properly this weekend.  I will update you all after the trip!

You did mention about Niagra Falls. I wanted to add few specific things to try at Niagra Falls for the best Experience. The best thing to do there is "Behind the Falls". It can take to closest to the falls. Only 20-25 feet away. Here is more information.
