So the time is upon us - the final film list comes out tomorrow, and the schedule isn't far off. Who amongst the Yelp folk are going this year? Heard any buzz on the films? Tips on festival-going for newbies?

I've got myself a 10 ticket package so i'm ready to get selectin' - I know I already want to go to two of the Midnight Madness selections (James Gunn's 'Super' and James Wan's 'Insidious'). How about you all?

  1. 8/17/2010 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

Oooh, good idea to organize some group screenings! I haven't looked at the schedule yet but I know a few people who book off weeks of work every year just so they can attend all the top screenings...

  2. 8/17/2010 Dishan "For Yelp Eyes Only" W. says:

I'll be volunteering for the first time this year! Extremely excited for it!

@KatF If only I had that kinda time to take off! I did 20 films last year with no vacation, and it almost killed me - so 10 it is this year.

@Dishan That's awesome, I've got a friend here who started last year and is going back for more she enjoyed it so much!

  3. 8/17/2010 Lauren "Lo-BAL" M. says:

I just realized I have this entire week booked off for work (coincidentally), so maybe I will check out films this year.

I definitely will see "Boxing Gym"

  4. 8/18/2010 from Yelp for iPhone Chad "I used to play DOOM I" M. says:

I'd be down to see some films...

  5. 8/18/2010 Carolyn B. says:

I really want to see "Barney's Version".

  6. 8/18/2010 Peter "kilo time" K. says:

So what's the deal for us out of town people?  Can tickets for screenings be purchased at the time or do I need to purchase in advance?

8/18/2010 Nicole "the Antipodean one" H. says:

@Carolyn I've not heard of that before now. I do like Paul Giamatti though :)

@Peter If you don't want to miss out, i'd suggest a ticket package that way you can select your films before single tickets go on sale (http://tiff.net/thefes...). Single tickets are on sale on the 3rd of September, and you can buy 'em online. If you wait til festival time, you can go to the festival box office and they'll have a giant board out front that's constantly being updated with what's sold out and what's still available.

  7. 8/18/2010 Carolyn B. says:

@Nicole - This movie has been in the works for YEARS!  At least twelve, actually!  The director, and even Richler before his death, spent years agonizing over the casting of the characters.  I can't wait!

I love Paul Giamatti.  I shouldn't confess this, but one of my favourite movies is "Big Fat Liar". (It's a kid flick.)  He is hilarious as "Marty Wolfe".

Well, the full film list and schedule are out!
    http://tiff.net/thefes...

Now I beging my process of whittling my list down to 10 films and submitting my advance order. I hate this part! So much to decide..

  8. 8/24/2010 Dishan "For Yelp Eyes Only" W. says:

I picked up my volunteer tshirt today too! Got a little goodies bag along with it as well as the magazine with the official schedule. I've started on my list of 7 - 10 movies I plan on catching this year.
So many options and I definitely want to watch at least one midnight madness screening as well!

I'm hoping to catch "Super" on the 10th and/or "Vanishing on 7th Street" on the 12th. Only dates that are convenient for me, and both films sound like something I would really enjoy.

I'd like to see Vanishing, but I think it'll get a theatrical release before the year is out, so i'm going to pass on having to spend a TIFF ticket on it. I put my submissions in today, just wanted to get it done and not labour over my decisions! Did go with Super and Insidious for MM though.

So i'm so late on the TIFF bandwagon. I was so busy with other stuff I didn't bother looking at the listings before my friend bought some tickets to see Easy Money (swedish version), which I don't know if I'll like.
Now that I look at them today 1 week later, i really really really want to see Black Swan.
But it says it's OFF SALE. What's the likely hood of it coming back on sale??

(and btw, the TIFF website is the most complicated thing I've ever seen. I can't find anything on it!) Is there email alerts?

9/7/2010 Nicole "the Antipodean one" H. says:

@Laura - The chances aren't likely, unfortunately. A friend was in line yesterday and saw the Herzog doc back on sale - by the time he got to the front of the line, it was back off sale. I would say check the day-of for a ticket, otherwise rush lines are your friend. I've been in rush lines where people have come along to sell their tickets to those waiting as well, so you might be lucky in that way also.

As far as email alerts, do you mean for ticketing? Sadly, no. You have to either check online box office and see what's still on sale, or go to the physical box office to check the board.

  11. 9/7/2010 Dishan "For Yelp Eyes Only" W. says:

@Laura it took me ages to figure out the tiff website as well. Not the best organized. I recommend creating an account and then selecting movies and movie times that you are interested in. It puts it all in a calendar for you. Don't know much about the email alerts though.

This is the first TIFF I'm attending. How do regular ticket holders get treated at a premier? Should I dress up? I'm assuming my TVA volunteer t-shirt and jeans are not an appropriate outfit.

Okay what's up with me paying $25 for a ticket, and my friend having to wait in line for 30 mins in the rain to pick up, and the seats aren't even assigned to us! I feel like TIFF is a money grabbing thing for us people....!! :(

9/9/2010 Nicole "the Antipodean one" H. says:

@Val G - if it's a gala, then I guess you have to dress up? I've been to loads of screenings at TIFF that are apparently world premieres (like Whip It, last year) but i'm never dressed up. Always in my comfy tshirt & jeans uniform!

@Laura - Why did you think you'd get assigned seating? That would be a nightmare on top of the already mad box office. And the lineups are inevitable really - the sheer amount of people trying to get their tickets sorted before the festival starts tomorrow means last minute rush. You can still go to the box office throughout the festival of course, but some folks like to have everything done.

I do agree about the money grabbing to a certain extent, having watched the ticket prices increase almost every year since I first went - but it's a massive, massive event with matching costs, which means you will pay $5-6 more than a regular movie ticket I guess.

  13. 9/9/2010 Dishan "For Yelp Eyes Only" W. says:

Since I'm volunteering I will have to ride my luck and see what movies I will be able to get in to. I've never had to pay for tiff movies thought as I've always had at least one friend volunteer and provide tickets to good shows. This is the first year that I paid attention to the actual process and I was able to fully appreciate how lucky I was to just have tickets handed to me. I was surprised as to how non-straightforward the process is and the prices can be considered pricey but I agree with Nicole in that the extra few $ are not unreasonable considering the event type.

@Val G, like Nicole did, you can walk in wearing comfy clothing, there is not set dress code, I've been to the big galas wearing just jeans and tshirts, you will not stick out whatever you do as people go for full on dressing up with full suites and dresses to students wearing jeans, tshirts carrying backpacks.

9/9/2010 from Yelp for iPhone Laura "Lala" C. says:

It's more like and extra $10 a ticket . ... I guess I thought we'd be at least assigned seats to compensate for extra cost, but really all I'm getting is a chance to watch the movie on a big screen and before the rest of the world. Not sure if that's something if readily shell out money for. But then again I have never been part of the tiff experience so maybe thats what I'm paying for.

Aside, my biggest peeve is that north american theatresdo not assign seats at movies like in Asia. It's awesome bc I know when a movie is full and can choose another date based on seat choices. And I don't have to come an hr early to save a spot. It's likewe have so much free timeto waste.

9/9/2010 Nicole "the Antipodean one" H. says:

Ah, I guess the cost for me was a little lower per ticket having gotten a package, but still. Also, people don't necessarily pay for a "TIFF experience".. some people go because they're stargazers, I guess. Some people go because of the hype. I personally try to lean toward seeing films I know won't get a cinema release (foreign & independant/undistributed usually) so i'm getting more for my money! I have a few in my package that I might get to see in the next year maybe, but a couple are Midnight Madness, screenings which I actually just love the vibe of anyhow.

I think I may have nearly ran over Natalie Portman on her bike with my can?!?! (O_o)

I was heading downtown last night on Avenue road and made a right turn and didn't really see this bike in my blind spot.  Luckily I did and she only lost balance to land on one foot.  I opened the window to apologize and she smiled back and said no problem.

Anyways.. I didn't really think about it until the next block where I thought, she sure looked like Natalie Portman.  Then I thought about the neighbourhood I was in.. then remembered about TIFF (still not sure if she's actually in town).

Okay I'm going to take back my complaint about high ticket fees as I've now attended my first tiff premiere (snabba cash) and I had a great time.

Loved how the writers and director was there and the q&a after. I can imagine how awesome it would be to see the cast or big name stars.

I still think seats should be assigned.

  17. 9/11/2010 Val "neutered's cuter" G. says:

I went to my first TIFF Premier tonight (Biutiful) and it was completed star-studded with paparazzi, red carpet and Javier Barden doing Q & A (I wore jeans.) I wish I had brought my camera though and bothered to come earlier to see whatever happens beforehand.

  18. 9/11/2010 Dishan "For Yelp Eyes Only" W. says:

I've been lucky enough to attend 2 gala events so far, and I just thought that I should  add to what @Nicole said about the Rush line being your friend. I was hoping to catch "Trust" by redeeming my volunteer voucher for a rush ticket and was there 2.5hours before the 9:30 start time (already one person in line). I had nothing to do so I decided to wait in line as well, and there were a lot of groups that were selling tickets (all of them I spoke to said at face value) and there were 3 or 4 instances when people would just give out the tickets just because they didn't want to see/people in their group canceled.

I was extremely lucky as I manged to score a free "priority" ticket just as that line was walking in. "Priority" gets great seats and are seated before normal ticket holders. So yes, Rush is definitely the place to be if you want to get in! (This gala was also supposed to be sold out, but I did see quite a few empty seats so I assume the whole Rush line (of around 20 people) managed to get in.

The other option is lining up at 7am everyday to buy day off tickets for shows and rumour has it that those lines are not very long. I think I might try that out sometime this week.

@Laura, i'm glad that you had an enjoyable experience - sometimes a festival screening can be more fun than a regular ol' one :)

@Dishan - nice one with the ticket score! I am not sure about trying to get day-of tickets - I may try for the Herzog doco this week. I went down on Thursday morning around 7.30am and walked straight in, don't know if that'll ring true during the festival too but it's worth getting up a bit earlier for.

I saw two world premieres last night - Daydream Nation and Super, both at Ryerson, and both with a group of cast + director/writer in attendance. Score! (Started adding a few pics over here - http://www.flickr.com/...)
