I know everyone has heard a lot about this issue.  What are your personal feelings? I feel saddened by the religious ignorance portrayed by extremists of ALL religions and this Florida pastor, IMHO, is no better than any other extremist zealot.  For what reason is this idiot going to burn a book that is the cornerstone of faith to the Muslim people??  Because of a horrendous act perpetrated by a small faction of nut-jobs??   With that logic, should he not also condemn those religious whackos who have caused thousands of deaths based on the basterdized word of the Christian bible?  Should he not burn the Bible in effigy to all the THOUSANDS of Humans who have died for the Catholic God, in times not so far past?  Sad, really, that in this age of "Enlightenment" there are still supposedly educated people who believe it's ok to punish the masses for the actions of the few.   For my Muslim friends out there, I wish to express my sadness at this potential atrocity, and hope you can still enjoy your celebration of Eid-al-Fitr this weekend in peace.

I think extremists in any faction/group/sect/etc are scary and ridiculous, and I don't get why at this point people give them any attention, instead of recognizing that they are zealots and in no way represent the vast majority of the group they associate themselves with.

It goes both ways. Muslim extremists have given Muslims a bad name. Christian extremists have given Christians a bad name. Rush Limbaugh gives Conservatives a bad name. Pauly Shore gave douchebags a bad name.

History repeats itself, unfortunately, and I wish we could just ignore these extreme examples and kill them off with apathy.

Part of me is feeling like it's two bald men fighting over a comb. There's no there there. They're fighting over who's myth is true. Whether or not Adam and Eve had navels type inanities. Normally if someone wants to burn any book, even a religious book, well that's their right and they have to suffer the consequences (ie someone already chucked a rock at their poorly named church sign... "dove outreach" are they even aware what those terms mean?)

But it does raise the question of putting real lives at risk. He's been warned many times his actions will most certainly lead to the deaths of soldiers, even soldiers within his community.

And here is is using the N word. And looking all rock 'n' roll.

I think this Terry Jones (pity he has the same name a Monty Python) will have the same career trajectory of Al Sharpton. Asshole today and in 10 years everyone will forget he was probably responsible for the deaths of dozens or hundreds of people and he'll be thought of a strong conservative community leader and he'll run for senate.

And in case you forget Al Sharpton's genesis (most people seem to think of him as an over preened Glen Beck type on the "other side") remember he rose to fame  as the bat shit conspiracy mongering freak who kept a disgusting hoax alive to further his own ends.

    http://everything2.com...

Alternative prediction, Glen Beck douche types are going to be sporting Terry Jones douchestaches in 10 years.

(A podcast I listen to made the astute observation you get more bat shit crazy religious leaders among evangelicals, southern baptists, and fellow travellers as there is no strong tradition of formal education before you can call yourself a pastor or minister. You just have to pick up a bible, read some of it, and start preaching the stuff that confirms god indeed thinks just like you. How amazing you and god happen to be on the same page regarding everything! Where as in mainstream Christian churches, you have to complete a BA or more, a seminary program, study the history of the bible, the origins of your faith, and even some real science and world history.)

It's just another example of how stupid Canada's southern neighbour and my former country has become.

I posted on another site that the tea baggers resemble the participants in Alice in Wonderland's tea party:  they scream about immigrants taking up all of America just like those creatures screamed "No Room, No Room!"  And don't you think Glen Beck is as crazy as the Mad Hatter and Sarah Palin as worthless as the Dormouse?  Perhaps this Terry Jones could join them as the March Hare.

The long term message for Canada is that it had better start cultivating new trading partners like India and Brazil and soon Mr. Harper's Tory successors may find themselves without an American ass to lick.

I've often wondered if a city like Toronto could exist in the U.S..  With all our different religions & ethnicities, we sure do seem to get along pretty well.

  3. 9/11/2010 Roma M. says:

@ Paul, If I were to pick a place to live in the U.S. it would either be San Francisco or New York, anywhere else just seems uninhabitable.

  4. 9/11/2010 Roma M. says:

@ Karl, I don't think it's a question of being fearful of consequences as much as just having respect for everyone and everyone's beliefs because so much of what we believe becomes a part of our identity. So when someone disrespects our beliefs we end up taking it as a personal attack.

It shouldn't be that way, but that's human nature.

  5. 9/11/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

This reminds me of another thread, Roma. But right I'm not going around attacking, say, Buddhists because I find their beliefs objectionable or funny. That would be disrespectful and they're not getting in my face about it. But if Buddhists wanted Canada to enforce some aspect of their moral belief by the power of law (or worse vigilante violence), they then bring their belief system to the public square. The belief system that informs the dogma they want the rest of us to follow then becomes subject to the broad range of the ways western society winnows out bad ideas in the market place of ideas. That ranges from sober, intellectual debate to biting satire to rap songs with obscene lyrics.

So lets say some religion says eating meat is an affront to the god they worship and Canada should ban the sale of meat because its immoral. Well, it's not immoral to me. I'd like to keep eating bacon. If the faithful want to obey their dogma, more power to them, but if they're trying to get a law passed and use their dogma as the basis for their claim then it's a right and even a duty to pick apart their dogma. After all, they're the ones who brought it to the public square. You can't bring an idea to the public square, ask the non believer to follow it, but then play the religion card claiming religion is the only idea in the market place of ideas that's immune from the burning crucible that is the market place of ideas.

So some christians think muslims, mormons, catholics, etc. are serving Satan. Some muslims/mormons/catholics think some fundy christians are serving Satan. The arguments they use to "prove" the other side is following Satan are the exact same arguments. Just cross out Christian and write in Muslim or vice versa. And frankly if these people want to burn each other's holy books I basically don't give a rats ass. Because each of those faith's do have adherents who do bring their dogma to the public square. Christians want their creation myth taught as fact in public school science classes. Muslims want the UN to pass blasphemy laws that make disrespect of Islam, and only Islam, a world crime.

The only thing that would make me give a rat's ass is if some act of interfaith cock blocking would surely cause the deaths of innocent people.
