Fact: I love cupcakes. I love baking them. I love eating them. I love critiquing them with fellow cupcake-lovers.

Scenerio: Cupcake Crawl in Toronto. Suggestions for the best places to get those little cup-like cake?

  1. 4/7/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

    Your house? :P

    Seriously though, Sneaky Dee's (go figure) has AMAZING cupcakes. Usually there are two flavours in rotation - pumpkin spice and cookies 'n creme.

    I just read a review of Cupcake Shoppe that said the cupcakes were mediocre at best.

    Where else...

    There's "Babycakes Cupcakes" or "Life Is Sweet, A Cupcake House".

    Both are great and much better than "Cupcake Shoppe"

    Fun thread! I run a home based cupcake biz here in the Bay Area of Cali. I'll be in Toronto in August and would LOVE to try some local cuppies!

    how hard is it really to make your own cupcakes? Bake sale! The store bought always have too much sugar!

    4/7/2009 Michelle V. says:

    @Greg - Oh it's not hard at all. I bake cupcakes all the time, in fact I think I prefer making them than eating them, but I like to do comparisons and such - find inspirations, ideas, see how much they charge and for what, you know? :)

  3. 4/7/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

    @Bijan: YES! It's a little known fact! Definitely get a cupcake (or two) next time you're at Sneak's. It really hits the spot after a night of carousing!

    i've been on the search, too!

    cora's has some cute mini cupcakes, and not bad. they're dense, though. my friend devours them in trays.

    most recently, i went to sweet bliss in leslieville. ooh la la. red velvet cupcake, red velvet cupcake!

    also, the dessert lady in yorkville has nice, simple vanilla cupcakes. they're small, but simple and good.

    i meant miss cora's kitchen in kensington! not to be confused with the overrated el grosso cora's breakfast + lunch...

  4. 4/7/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

    What about Dufflet or Sweets From The Earth - they're both popular Toronto suppliers of baked goods; do they make cupcakes?

    4/8/2009 Angela H. says:

    Dufflet's cupcakes are HUGE - 4" cupcakes, that are basically like eating a whole cake.  They only come in 2 flavors:  double chocolate and vanilla.  Kinda dry.  Nothing special at all.  Stick to their cakes!

  5. 4/11/2009 Miriam "kleine maus" W. says:

    A cupcake crawl? Please dear gawd let this happen on a date when I'm in Toronto!

  6. 6/7/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

    When is this happening by the way? Let's plan it!

    Really curious about the cupcakes at Sneaks! Also CreARTive Cakes at Woodbine and Danforth is finally open to the public (previously a custom cake bakery for appointment only). Can't wait to try what they have to offer :)

    CUP CAKES!!!

    I'm sooo in on the cup cake crawl!!!  I havent found any good cup cake places in TO yet but truthfully i havent got the chance to venture out yet.  I've read up about a bunch good places by the beaches though...buuut i've been waiting for the weather to get nice enough to go on a cupcake crawl in that area and sooo that i could end up like a beached whale at the end of it.

    If you guys are ever in Mr or Mississauga, dont leave til you go to swirls in Streetsville!  Amazing cup cakes and you get a dozen for $21!!

    Hey Andrea!
    Hell yeah I was there :D
    I was the girl on the mic who most likely announced you and was too stressed to eat a cupcake.
    And you totally reminded me that Monica and I should get our act together and start actively planning for the next one (and also wrangle more volunteers to help with crowd control [hint everyone!]) Hope you'll register again and join us.

    And for those of you wondering what she won for, check out:

    After doing some research (thanks BlogTO, A Baked Creation and of course, Yelpers :), how does this tour sound (I mainly stayed central-ish but starting at Leslieville thus, omitting places like Cupcake Shoppe and Life Is Sweet)

    1. Sweet Bliss Baking Company (1304 Queen Street East)
    * http://www.sweetblissb.../
    * $2.50 each
    * Available flavours as listed on their web site: Vanilla with butter cream icing, Carrot with cream cheese icing, Banana Chocolate, Double Chocolate and Chocolate with strawberry icing

    2. It's The Icing On The Cake (1238 Queen Street East)
    * http://www.itstheicing...
    * $2.00 each
    * Available flavours: Chocolate and Vanilla

    3. BabyCake (892 Queen Street East - located inside parent restaurant Lil' Baci)
    * http://www.babycake.ca/
    * $3.25 each
    * Available flavours: Listed here but might not be available in-store http://www.babycake.ca...

    [Might have to walk back to grab the Pape bus and head north to...]

    4. Sweet Tooth (508 Danforth Ave - between Chester and Pape Stn)
    * Available flavours: subject to change but when I was there last they had chocolate, vanilla, chocolate mocha, chocolate raspberry, vanilla strawberry and carrot w/ cream cheese frosting

    [Take TTC to Kensington Market...]

    5. Miss Cora's Kitchen (69 Kensington Ave)
    * http://www.misscoraski.../
    * Available flavours as listed on their web site: chocolate/vanilla/lemon/carrot cake with cream cheese icing

    [A bit of a jaunt to...]

    6. Sneaky Dee's (431 College Street - College/Bathurst)
    * http://www.sneaky-dees...
    * Available flavours: cookies 'n' cream and pumpkin (both vegan)

    I also recommend this be done on a Saturday. Most bakeries are either closed on Sundays or close around 7 on weeknights. There's also a bunch of place more west but I chose to stop at Bathurst. Thoughts?

    Count me in...tasty treats with awesome people.  Sounds like fun!  So curious to see what the trends are around town.

    Although nothing lives up to your tasty creations, Michelle!  Better than anything else :)

    Can't wait for the next Cupcake Camp either...the first one was such a success, you just know there will be even more people interested the next time around.  And the first one had hundreds!  Good lord.

    @Andrea - I was at cupcake camp and had an awesome time.
    @Michelle - I KNEW you looked familiar! It's been bugging me for quite some time now. Definitely going back to cupcake camp.

    Sneaky Dee's is a great vegan cupcake. The owner actually makes them everyday at home and brings them in.
    Also they're opened really late so you can grab some nighty cupcakes. YUM

  10. 6/9/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

    OK! We've gotta do this. Possibly not this Saturday, but next? Michelle, will you post the event or shall I?

    I won't be able to do it on the 20th (believe it or not but I'll be busy baking cupcakes for a party :)
    Anytime before or after that.

    Also, I mapped it (yup, I'm THAT girl) and noticed a cupcake void between Broadview to Spadina. Anyone have any ideas what to fill that with?

    Heard about your cupcake crawl this weekend. Hope you guys have another one! If you do, you should check out Mocha Mocha on the Danforth. Their cupcakes are deee-lish! Not to mention their food is great too. Maybe next time you guys can end off there like you did Sneaky Dee.

  17. 7/5/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

    Good idea, Joanne! We could do a midtown cupcake crawl since we missed a bunch of more northern bakeries - I'll be honest though, I don't want to eat another cupcake for a few weeks. Total cupcake moratorium in my household!!
