I've traveled all over America, but this October I'm making my very first trip up to Canada and I'm quite stoked about it! I got very lucky that you guys recently started Yelping as well, and I have a few places marked already that I really want to check out. I will be in town for the first two weeks on business, so I'll be tied up most every day until about 4pm, but I'll have all my afternoon & nights free. Are there any places that really scream "this is Toronto, bitch" that anyone visiting should definitely see to get a feel of life in Canada/Toronto?

    Hi Justin,
Based on a quick look at your profile, here's my suggestions:
    1. Live karaoke at Tattoo Rock Parlour (singers are backed by a full band)
567 Queen Street West (http://www.tattoorockp...) - Tuesday nights
    2. Dinner at the Keg (it's a Canadian steakhouse chain, and really good food and value)
    165 York Street (http://www.kegsteakhou...)
    3. Bier Markt (restaurant with 10 million types of beer)
    4. St. Lawrence Market (for all of your gourmet food shopping needs -- and free samples of fancy mustard)
    Front and Jarvis Streets
    5. The Drake Hotel, in general (upstairs patio specifically)
38 The Esplanade or 600 King Street West

oops... sorry... those addresses at the bottom are for the two Bier Markt locations.  The Drake is way out in Queen West at Beaconsfield Ave.

Wow Erin, that's a great list! I will do my best to hit all of them up, especially the Bier Market, that's right up my alley. I already had the Keg bookmarked to try, so I'm to hear it was a solid choice =)

Coolness.  If you're into beer, another great place to go is Volo (Yonge Street just north of Wellesley).  They have 12 beers on tap (changes daily) and about 200 in bottles.  I'd suggest ordering a trio of three small glasses or going on Monday (pints are $5).  They also have an entire binder dedicated to wine.  It's insane!

Other beer-related things are visiting our local breweries Steamwhistle (where you can go on a tour or just stop by for a free sample) and Mill Street (which is in a cool area and also has free samples).  Both are on Yelp!

Personally I think the Keg is just a regular old steakhouse - decent food but nothing special. I find the stuff in the Keg Mansion however to be much better (although prices are a bit higher, it's worth it) - it's at 515 Jarvis Street

The Keg is a chain, if you don't mind that. It's just overpriced comfort food, but I don't have any problems with it! I totally suggest you go to the Keg Mansion location, as Bijan said above.

I see you like burgers, and there are a few places that may strike your fancy -- my fave so far in the city is Freshwood Grill in Kensington. That'll put you in a neighbourhood that you need to see anyway, so go! I've also been meaning to go to Dangerous Dan's in Leslieville, which is an institution all on its own http://www.dangerousda.../

Urm... St. Lawrence Market is a biggie. There's a perogie place downstairs that is pretty awesome -- cheddar and jalapeno, mushroom and sauerkraut, guh, guh! Dessert perogies are available, too.

Though I haven't been, and although it's sketchy and dive-bar-ish, a lot of my friends like to get together at the Rhino, only because they have a massive beer-on-tap collection. It's here: http://www.therhino.ca/

    That's all for now!

Wow, so many great suggestions, thanks everyone! I'll be flying in Monday and staying here for two weeks:

It looks like it's pretty centrally located, and right on the subway line, so not too many places will be off limits. Should be a great trip!

So far Toronto has been a lot of fun, but I'm wondering where all the people are?? I realize it's off nights, but we've gone out Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and it's a total ghost town...any suggestions on where to go which night of the week? Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy a good pint even in a bar by myself, but I want to see and meet some Canadians! =)

  9. 10/1/2008 Bijan V. says:

You're right in the financial district so at night yes it is a ghost down :) If you want to meet some Canadians go up to College st. (west of bathurst) or Queen street west. Usually they are a bit more packed with the locals. Front and King street being the financial centres are packed only during the weekdays.
