11/19/2009 Bryan "short stuff" G. says:

I'm a huge fan of falling asleep to music. I often go through periods of time where I fall asleep to the same album every single night for weeks or months in a row. My top 5 sleep albums are:

1. Elliott Smith - Either/Or
2. Sigur Ros - ()
3. The Cure - Bloodflowers
4. Nick Drake - Pink Moon
5. Sigur Ros - Heim

Honourable Mentions:
Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase
Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith
Elliott Smith - Roman Candle
Attack in Black - Curve of the Earth
Phillip Glass - Songs From the Trilogy
Eddie Vedder - Into the Wild
Neil Young - Prairie Wind

Apparently I like to bore myself to sleep. But enough about me, what are YOUR top 5 sleep albums?

sigur ros is clutch, and pink moon is classic strumming and soft vocals.

I would select In Rainbows, the Bends or Kid A...Almost anything Radiohead. Hail to the Thief, OK, and Amnesiac boast some tunes that might wake you up in the middle of the night.

I used to have some messed up lucid dreams while falling asleep to this album!

Anything by Philip Glass or the other minimalists.  Totally boring music guaranteed to send you nodding.

Sorry about the double post - a glitch.

  1. 11/19/2009 Vivek "When I wake up imma be yelping" S. says:

@John F. - A glitch, or a highly clever allusion to the repetitive structures of Philip Glass' music?

@Greg C. - Steve Reich?  Someone else listens to aleatory music?  You're A NERD, son.  I should know.  Did you ever listen to his "It's gonna rain"?  In full?

Contrary to John, I listen to Philip Glass when I'm working.  The repetition and drone keeps me alert and focussed.  When falling asleep however, you can't beat Stars of the Lid.  It's like a musical vacuum.  No melody, rhythm or structure.  It's like a musical fog.

    Top Five
Stars of the Lid - And their refinement of the decline
Holst - The Planets Symphony (the last three tracks)
Godspeed you Black Emperor - Raise your skinny fists like antennas to heaven
Howard Shore - Lord of the Rings Soundtrack (some of it is loud, though)
    Sigur Ros - ()

Right now I'm so tired I could fall asleep to The Ryde of the Valkyries.

@vivek I'm only vaguely familiar with Reich and this album is a fave for me. HELLZ YEAH, I'm a nerd!
I have never heard of Stars of the LId.

I had to add the first couple albums from the Clientele to the list. Not a dis, they're just perfect for night time listening.

Steve Reich eh?  Would it be natural to suggest Seven Swans by Sufjan even if its the most folky of the bunch?  Different Trains by Reich?  It's performed by the Kronos Q so two in one.  Similar compositional style as It's Gonna Rain but without the Pentacostal ranting and probably a little more sleep inducing even with the blaring train horn.
Personally, I need complete and utter silence to fall sleep but I have a lot of music that I like to space out to which would probably do the job. I think the only music that I could actually fall asleep to would be some heavy sitar music.

Good call on the Sufjan. I found a lot of Illinois to be influenced by Reich. I'm with you. These days I just fall right asleep. A book will do that to me lately as well.... sad

  3. 11/19/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

    Lucky Pierre - Hypnagogia

It was created expressly for the purpose of falling asleep:

"Aidan Moffat's principal mission behind 'Hypnagogia' was to make 'music to fall asleep to'. Indeed, the inspiration to create a relaxing wind-down record of his own came from the incessant spawn of contrived chill out records which currently invade record stores everywhere. 'I can't stand those chill-out things and I was having real bad sleeping problems; I just couldn't relax, so I decided to find some sounds which I liked and put them together, it's as simple as that'."

    It's flawless.
