I've only seen the first ep this season but:

1) It seems like some time has passed. Don's wife has remarried? Don seems pretty non freaked out by that old fox coming home with his wife.

2) Don likes the rough stuff.

3) Don's swimwear ad looked like child diddler material.

4) He was a dofus in the Korean war and got his superior officer killed. He's interviewed by a guy who lost his leg in that same war. He feels guilty.

5) Is there a second floor?

  1. 8/6/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

    Second Ep:

    1) Don boinks his secretary. He seems to have long had a policy not to boink in his own nest. He's had a lot of attractive secretaries and didn't give them a leg over. But he slips up with this one.

    2) The reformed drunk copy writer didn't want Campbell on the account but turns a huge booze hound loose on his AA buddy?

    3) Peggy's bf seemed a real dork.

    4) The creepy kid is back. And he's fixin' for the daughter. I find the creepy kid the most compelling supporting character.

I hope the Glen story doesn't last, I hate him!

  2. 8/6/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

Good memory for names! Right the boy's name is Glen. I noticed they introduced a knife but didn't really make much  use of it in the rest of the ep. The creepy Glen might use it to stab Don's daughter? Will this bring them back together as a couple?

  3. 8/6/2010 Elaine "Danger Zone" K. says:

Threadjack: I've only seen one episode of this show. Is it worth it to rent the first season?

    8/6/2010 Michelle C. says:

The knife had a bracelet hanging on it that he said he made himself. At the end of the ep. when Sally went into her room after the break in, the bracelet was on her bed.

  4. 8/6/2010 Kelly "Swagger Coach" O. says:

    @ Elaine : YES!

From what I gather, 2 years has passed since Don moved out...
I find it annoying that the children haven't aged.  The baby is still a baby for godsakes!
Don sure is cranky all the time.  And in this season I find him incredibly sexy......Maybe I have a thing for incredibly hot jerks?
I love how the senator's mother hates Betty...and feels badly for the children.
I am afraid and intrigued by creepy Glen as well!

  5. 8/6/2010 Elaine "Danger Zone" K. says:

Alright, @Kelly, I'm sold! Now to get out of this spoileriffic thread :)

  6. 8/6/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

Threadjack enabler: Yes! The show works on so many levels. One, there is a dark mysterious creative genius guy who is also super sexy (or so I'm told). Everyone dresses like grown ups. Every episode has a "wow, we used to live like that?" scene. For example, a mother driving her kids around without the kids in car seats or belted in. People leaving their picnic litter on the ground and walking away. Smoking on planes. Interesting music. People have sex with their clothes on. A season long story arc plus great episode stories.

  7. 8/6/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

I noticed that Don seems to be not scoring with women these last couple eps. His naughty nurse neighbor, the psy-ops advertising woman, the fix up date. They all refused his advances. He's no longer the four square family man that makes him dangerous and a conquest and an object of envy among single women. Now he's some divorced guy living in crap apartment. He's become rather resistible and I think he sensed it so he boinked his secretary as an ego boost.

  8. 8/6/2010 Avitania "I Hunger, Coward" B. says:

OK. Don liking the rough stuff in the first ep this season? HOT. Speaking of hot... MORE JOAN PLEASE. KTHX.

Am I the only one who wants Don and his wife to get back together? Totally not going to happen, but... I actually liked Don the Philanderer better than Don the Sad Single.

Also, it's supposed to have been TWO YEARS since Don moved out? Really? They could at least have gotten different kids!

  9. 8/6/2010 Avitania "I Hunger, Coward" B. says:

(to clarify, I meant different kids to play older versions of the Draper kids)

    - Not at all surprised Don likes the rough stuff.
    - Don is sad and pathetic now. Women used to throw themselves at him but now they're turned off by the stench of desperation.
    - I predict Creepy Glen will abduct/run off with Sally.
    - I like the new and improved Peggy.
    - I wanna know what's going on with Joan's rapist husband.

  10. 8/6/2010 Kelly "Swagger Coach" O. says:

@Avitania - YES, I totally want the drapers back together!  I loved their dynamic, and you're right...sexy cheating Don is WAY hotter than sexy sad Don!
    LOL
Also a YES to more Joan - but apparently there will be more of her, judging by the clips from "next time, on Mad Men".  Fingers crossed!

  11. 8/6/2010 Roma M. says:

Last Ep: It's just clarifying the myth that women love men who are married. Personally, I don't get it, but now the secretary is scorned. I'm pretty certain this season is going to be about his downward spiral. I'm pretty surprised about the newspaper interview. I was hoping some sleuth would have uncovered his dirty little war secret.

I loved the Peggy side plot and I adore her character, but going for the assistant? Really.

@Avitania, I'm a little surprised at the two year jump because there seems to be no huge change at the office, but I think they portrayed the children's growth pretty well.

  12. 8/6/2010 Stephanie "Let the choir sing!" C. says:

I don't think the Drapers should get back together. I don't know why, but I'm really disliking Betty in this season. Don wasn't perfect but she's become such a bitch, of course being lied to by her husband doesn't help. But she just irritates me!

I don't see the creepiness in Glen so maybe I'll have to watch the first two episodes again and see if I can pick up that feeling. I agree with his mother that Betty's kids are scared of their mother (well, the daughter). Man, those kids will be f-ed up later on.

yes, more Joan, and Sal too! The last we saw of him he was cruising men in Central Park (or something similar to that). Is he going to be resurrected later this season?

  13. 8/6/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

Good observation, Roma about it being a downward spiral for Don. His bathing suit pitch was horrible. He's not making it with the ladies and he's even violating his own rules. Remember a season or two ago when he fell in with the hippy free love people and he rejected that because he thought there were some limits. Now we see him paying to get beaten by a Betty Page type.

While I don't think all women have secret fantasies about married men, I had a GF that definitely thought a well married man raised his attractiveness score. It probably had less to do with the forbidden fruit or conquest idea and more like "that's the kind of guy I want". I guess I wasn't :)

  14. 8/6/2010 Avitania "I Hunger, Coward" B. says:

@stephanie - OMG! I forgot about Sal -- we need more Sal! Him coming out of the closet would be a great story line.

@Karl - his bathing suit pitch was awful, but I will say I loved him throwing the clients out of SCDP. Maybe because I've wanted to do that at work many a time. ;)

  15. 8/6/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

I think the last time we saw Sal is he was on a pay phone making a desperate call to his beard wife and it looked like he was about to swing with some leather boys or something.

Yeah, Sal was great. Who didn't hate Don when he dared to lecture Sal about "you people can't control yourselves".

I was kind of annoyed that suddenly Don and the gang were all friends again -- I mean, they had all turned on each other at the end of Season 3 and now they're suddenly chums again and running a new ad agency.  What's up with that?!

And it seems to have just jumped a year or more into the future, which is just silly.

I'll keep watching it though, lol.

  16. 8/7/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

The jump took me a bit to get my mind around. Keeping an income does have a way of making you bury, temporarily, disputes. That doesn't freak me out so much.

I thought it was only one year since Don moved out? I must have missed that. Sally definitely looks older, but yes the baby is still a baby which is completely stupid.

Does it bother anyone else how Betty is kind of very rude/cold to her children? I can't help but feel terrible for them!

And Peggy's boyfriend is dorky and looks like he's 16.

  18. 8/9/2010 Roma M. says:

I loved Lane Price's character in this ep., -I had no idea he could be incredibly kooky.

if you ever rent the movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" you will see the actor who plays Lane on MM and he is almost unrecognizable

so happy the young girl did not sleep with DD lol

  20. 8/9/2010 Stephanie "Let the choir sing!" C. says:

@ Lauren: yes, I'm very bothered by the fact that Betty is rude/mean/cold to her kids. After the incident during Thanksgiving dinner, I completely agreed with the comment made by Henry's mother that Betty's kids are scared of her. To me, I've grown to dislike her and feel sorry for her kids.

I'm really happy to see more of Lane and Joan in this episode.

Episode 3: I heart Lane Pryce! The actor who plays him (Jared Harris) was on Fresh Air. Found out he's the son of Richard Harris and stepson of Rex Harrison, and he played Andy Warhol in I Shot Andy Warhol. Great interview. http://www.npr.org/tem...

    - Who else thinks Joan's rapist husband is going to get shipped off to 'Nam and get killed?
    - I love the rapport between Don and Anna.
    - Don needs to stop chasing every tail that comes his way. I'm embarrassed for him.

  21. 8/10/2010 Stephanie "Let the choir sing!" C. says:

@ Susan: No wonder Jared Harris aka Lane Pryce looked so familiar. I saw the movie and couldn't remember the actor who played Warhol was.

I also agree with you that Joan's husband will get killed in Vietnam.

I'm also sad that Anna is going to pass away. She seems to me that she''s the only person who genuinely loves Don.

  22. 8/11/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

It would seem married Don who cheats with a certain cut of woman was way more appealing to viewers than Don who lives in a crap apartment and pays a Betty Page type to slap him around. Ratings down 24%.

    http://news.yahoo.com/...

So hmmmm last ep. Does that represent a bottoming out for Don? What did the scene where Joan's doctor husband sewed up her cut represent?

It would appear this season starts only a bit more than a year after last season. Last season ended during the JFK assassination (Christmas 1963) and this season starts roughly Christmas 1964. Last ep they toasted in 1965.

I for one don't like the "mod" furniture styles of their new offices.

And I hope we'll never seen Don Draper wearing a suit like this in Season 12:

    http://images.bizrate....

  23. 8/12/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

Did you spot the "wow people lived like that?" scenes? 1) Joan's doctor is smoking in the exam room 2) the woman dying of cancer isn't told by her doctor.

  24. 8/17/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

Rejected: Nice bit with Peter. He's told to ditch the account and instead reaches for the brass ring. The secretaries all going Oprah was kind of freaky.

    I miss Paul Kinsey.

  25. 8/17/2010 Avitania "I Hunger, Coward" B. says:

So, who wants to put a bet on how many episodes it'll be 'til Peter's wife miscarries?

Where's Sal?? I miss Sal! Also, more drunk Lane Pryce please!

  26. 8/18/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

They really through Peggy into a whole new world. Pot. Lesbos. Beatnicks. Huh!

I agree Avitania they'll probably do some miscarriage plot although I hope they don't. Seems way too melodramatic.

I like someone has declared themselves Don's nemesis. I couldn't figure out if they won the Honda account, however. I sure wish they'd win some accounts. Don's slump is no fun. But, man, Roger coming in giving the Japanese guys the whatfor was painful to watch. It reminds me my friend's dad survived the blitz. My friend bought a Volkswagen (circa 1995). His dad was angry. "You know we fought a war against them!"

what I cannot figure out was ...
did Roger actually fight in a war???  I thought he was a spoiled rich kid who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and that his father paved the way and struggled to achieve wealth and success

  28. 8/25/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

That's a good question, She. Maybe he makes a big stink of it to cover up he pulled a George W Bush. Then again, my impression is everyone did their duty. Jimmy Stewart, for example, flew bomber missions over Germany.

8/25/2010 from Yelp for iPhone Danielle "simplification of anything is always sensational" P. says:

In the episode Roger talks in detail about the "boys" he fought with, so suffice it to say that he did fight. Otherwise the angst would be a miss. Karl I was under the impression that no one won the account, they were never really leaving their agency only seeing what else was out there. It was a win regardless, and they needed one for sure. I can hardly wait until they end Betty. Enough whining and bitching, honestly!

  29. 8/25/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

Oh yeah. Betty. She was really insufferable this ep. Don is a bad husband but she can't see she's a bad mother.

I'm pretty sure Roger did indeed fight in WWII. He and Don talk about their respective fights in season 1, first during the 2nd ep (I think) and then the ep where Roger invites himself over and then hits on Betty.

His father put in the work to establish the firm with Bert.

@Karl and @Danielle: As much as I'm loathing anything involving Betty as well, one of the main themes of the series has been "everyone is broken" and I think that this episode focused that to specifically state "everyone is broken but doesn't realize it" which certainly made it extra enjoyable for me with Betty and painful with Roger. I could be way off, but it works for me.

From the preview of next week's episode, it looks like that's going to continue with Pete and Peggy at the very least.

    Look

  30. 9/10/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

    Re The Suitcase

Duck is loathsome. But how is he different from Don?

It was difficult to see Don put the irons to Peggy but then sometimes Peggy seemed her worst enemy. And I liked the Joe Namath ad idea.

I did like Don took a swing at Duck to defend Peggy's honor. And again the war record thing comes back to haunt Don. All these men are flawed but they served with honor and were successful warriors. They killed the enemy and they came back home. Don was a complete fk up, got his commanding officer killed, and then stole his id!

And more hypocrisy from Don. He gave Peggy her shot but then Roger gave Don his. But both seemed to ignore the pleas of the super dork.  I do like that Don put Peggy's beef in context. She's only been working two years. She needs to take her lumps. She's not earned her prima donna status.

I like Joan takes a lot of control, chewing out the copywriters for being pigs.

And that new art director guy is horrible. Pompous and I've not seen anything talented out of him.

it seems like back in those days if you weren't born into money like roger sterling you had to re-invent yourself

the scene where he was throwing up was painful to watch and then he tries to fight after that yuck
and whose name was written on the washroom wall again "For a good time call Caroline" or something like that

I wonder if the young man who stood up to Joan will lose his job over that

    and ugh cannot stand Mark

  31. 9/22/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

I'm a week behind. I'm on the ep where Peggy fires that asshole. That was sweet! Still, I wish Joan wasn't such a total bitch about it. I like the jerk's bit about "well, we should see what Don thinks about this." "Don doesn't even know who you are."

    Go Peggy!

Don is slowly moving back into the swing of things. That youngin' warmed up to him once she saw Don's ex wife. And I liked his comment with the ad shrink. Something about that's as far as he was prepared to go. Not wanting to make another mistake like he did with his sec?
