At a house party on Saturday I chatted with a chef who had a finger cast. When I asked him what happened he told me it was a chopping accident. Chopping what, you may ask?

Butternut squash? Mango? Apple? Nope - CILANTRO.

I'm more convinced now than ever that cilantro (coriander leaf) is the devil. Why can it never be used in moderation? There is always wayyy too much.

For me, the notable exception to the "always wayyy too much " rule (exemplified in my mom's salads: do you hear me, mom?  Salads should not be 50% cilantro by weight) is pad thai.  So many restaurants serve sugary pad thai without enough zippy cilantro to cut the sweetness.

Good point Cynara, sometimes you need an extra sprig of cilantro or two to liven things up! I had the buddha bowl the other day at fresh and there was like three meagre flecks of cilantro in there! Not nearly enough in my opinion to do tango with the peanut sauce. :)

Nooooooo!!!!  I love cilantro!  It adds that extra layer of flavour and I find that the intensity mellows out after a certain amount.  You know what's good?  Deep fried cilantro with a sprinkling of sugar dusting.  Great with vanilla ice cream.  :)
    C'mon love cilantro too!

I used to HATE the stuff. Reminded me a lot of wet nasty gym socks. Then I moved to California and had far too much Mexican food.

Now I like it. Can't have too much though, still got sock memories.

I think you're all forgetting that you can't make a mean guacamole without cilantro. It may be the devil, but I can't live without it!!

Second Jarrell's comments.  I used to often think 'what is this awful flavour I cannot quite identify ruining my tacos...' and it was cilantro/corriander.  After spending time eating pork tacos off Californias best roach coach 'catering trucks' it grew on me like a bad fungus.  Now I consider tacos woefully incomplete without a moderate sprinkle.

yes.............. but, only because it's so tempting

I really hate the taste/smell of the cilantro too but apparently it is really gOOd for you

Am I the only one that refuses to call it cilantro?  (Coriander?  I hardly know her!  Ho-ho)

But seriously this stuff is awesome.  I have Ziploc bags full of powdered coriander at home.  Didn't know people had such a hate-on for it.
