unless he has a strong opinion about phones, iPhone, all the way. it's a smaller iPad that actually makes calls, you cannot go wrong with that.

  1. 7/31/2010 from Yelp for iPhone Thom H. says:

I agree with Mozart.  But then, who's going to disagree with Mozart.  Seriously though, unless you already have some other smartphone that you really like, get the iPhone before you get the pad.

    I'm with Mozart &
Thom.  I was without service the other day for 18 hrs, & I thought I was going to have a meltdown, but it's all good again.  Unless you want to carry a manbag or a backpack around (I don't), it's iPhone all the way!

8/1/2010 from Yelp for iPhone Amit ""COME ON ENGLAND!"" B. says:

2 completely different devices for different uses. iPad is touted as a netbook replacement whereas the iPhone 4 is a phone with the capabilities of an iPad but smaller. The technology in the iPhone 4 is also better than the ipad - more ram, same spec processor thus making it faster. With the iPhone, it also depends on what plan you get and if you sign-up with. 2 yr v.s. 3 yr plan.
Btw, there are 2 versions of the iPad - the 3G version and the non-3G version. 3G version allows you to access the 3G network and enjoy "Internet everywhere". There is a monthly fee to enjoy this and the cost depends on the the plan.

I think both are cool toys - you should go to the Apple Store and play with both and see which one your spouse would enjoy the most! Good luck :-)

I would go with the iPad. Even though I like the iPhone, but ever since I got my ipad, i haven't been able to put it down. The games, videos and web is so much crisper and enjoyable.

iPad with a Maxim magazine suscription.

  3. 8/2/2010 Aaron H. says:

iPhone, i see people out in public now on occasion with their ipads, i think they just look silly when people try and multi task with them akwardly (i.e. eating and viewing). I've seen one guy who tried to prop it up on a treadmill with some success but i can just imagine it falling and shattering and taking him out. I really really wanted to like the ipad but after trying it out in the store it just feels clunky. Maybe ipad 2.0 will be better or wait for the fall for the presumed ipod touch HD if he doesnt need a phone.

The iPad sounds like a femproduct, so based on that I would go with the phone or a notebook.

If you decide to go with the netbook, look at the N450/N455 Atom processor. Also, make sure with the sales associate that you can upgrade the ram to 2Gb as most come with 1Gb and cannot be upgraded. Don't let them sell you on DDR3 either (it's a new type of ram - no faster than the current crop of DDR2's). Don't get a netbook with a 3-cell battery - it will not last you very long - minimum 6-cell. Feel out the keyboard -some feel flimsy and cheap. Brands to look at: HP Mini Series, Asus eee, Toshiba, heck even the Acer/Gateway's are pretty good. I purchased a white HP Mini for my wife and it's fantastic.

iphone because of portability. I don't know how guys would carry around an ipad without having a European carryall.

  6. 8/4/2010 Avitania "I Hunger, Coward" B. says:

@Elaine - LOL! And by "European carryall" you mean "murse," right? heehee

@Avitania haha yes, murse, or manbag.

I say iPhone too unless he would be admantly against it. iPad is good for people that don't already have laptops.

btw, a friend of mine got an iPad and then was forced to return it (or otherwise buy a entirely new OS for his 4yr old Mac)
Is this true, that the iPad is incompatible with older OS?? (not to mention that the apply store guy had to google it and look it up) yes, i know you can 'get' the software, but i'm talking about a person that's not very computer capable or would feel ethically wrong about 'getting' the software. What else can he do?

8/4/2010 Brian "The Void" C. says:

I'd go for an iPhone.  Never by a first generation Apple product.  The new iPhone has an amazing display, which isn't available yet on the iPad.  However, the iPad 2 almost certainly will and it will probably be twice as fast and have many of the features that current users complain that it is lacking.

8/5/2010 from Yelp for iPhone Mozart A. says:

@Laura: I didn't understand what was the problem. The OS of the iPad is the iOS, the same that runs on the iPhone. The OS that runs in Macs is the OS X. Software for the iOS won't run in OS X and vice-versa.

I cannot understand how the iPad can be "compatible" with any Mac OS. Do you mean, there's not an iTunes version for that OS that you could use to sync your stuff with your iPad?

8/5/2010 from Yelp for iPhone Doug "DdougG" G. says:

You could always get him an apple with a string attached to the stem. Then have the string lead to an Apple Store gift certificate at the end of a long and twisting path.  :)

  8. 8/5/2010 Avitania "I Hunger, Coward" B. says:

@mozart - I think what is meant by "compatibility" is more that the iPad doesn't officially support older Mac OS's. If a person can get the iPad working with a computer running OS 9 and an old version of iTunes more power to her/him, but if it doesn't work, don't expect any help from Apple support trying to get it to do so. I could be wrong, but so far that's my interpretation of what Laura was talking about.
