Mr M. says:
"Celebrities in town for the Toronto International Film Festival and other guests at the Royal York Hotel woke Friday to banging drums and chanting as 30 striking workers marched outside.
Since last year, said valet attendant Michelle Williams, her hours have been cut from eight to four a day whenever occupancy drops to 75 per cent or below.
Williams, who has a 10-year-old child and a 90-minute commute to work, said the hotel's demand that she be available if occupancy rose made it impossible to get a second job."
I think its reasonable to have some demands for stability. Anyone else have any opinions regarding this strike or insight into work conditions in the hospitality industry?
Watching the news last night said that a few more hotels workers may start striking as well. Just unfortunate it is happening during the TIFF. But if I was only working 4 hrs a day, and my employer refused my ability to find another job, then I'd either quit or also appeal for more employment security and benefits.
