9/10/2010 Mr M. says:

"Celebrities in town for the Toronto International Film Festival and other guests at the Royal York Hotel woke Friday to banging drums and chanting as 30 striking workers marched outside.

Since last year, said valet attendant Michelle Williams, her hours have been cut from eight to four a day whenever occupancy drops to 75 per cent or below.

Williams, who has a 10-year-old child and a 90-minute commute to work, said the hotel's demand that she be available if occupancy rose made it impossible to get a second job."

I think its reasonable to have some demands for stability. Anyone else have any opinions regarding this strike or insight into work conditions in the hospitality industry?

Watching the news last night said that a few more hotels workers may start striking as well. Just unfortunate it is happening during the TIFF. But if I was only working 4 hrs a day, and my employer refused my ability to find another job, then I'd either quit or also appeal for more employment security and benefits.

There's a picture in the Star of Martin Sheen, who joined the picket line this morning.

"We will not cross your line and if you want us to leave the hotel we will," Sheen told the cheering picketers on behalf of himself and his son, actor and director Emilio Estevez.

It's another example of huge, rich corporations making wads of money & not sharing.      I would not want to do that type of work all day.  I think it could've been timed better though, as I don't think most of the celebrities (?) really give a shit, really.

Most actors are elitist, rich-liberal types so they have no problem blindly supporting any type of labour action. It won't scare them away. In fact, they embrace this kind of stuff because they can look good on TV for supporting it, and just go rent a penthouse suite down the street at a non-union hotel, all the while singing solidarity forever. Ha ha....

he is here to promote his movie with his son what better way to get his name and movie plastered all over the media ... I don't know whether to condemn him or ... I don't really know how dedicated he is to the causes of these strikers
